Hold on a sec, a 2.8Ghz PC and you couldn't even scroll? That doesn't sound right. Even with DX1.1 on a Celeron 500 w/ 256MB Ram I could run DX and the machine wouldn't bog down that much. With 2.21 on a 3.0HT, I can have any reasonable amount of widgets and the CPU never budges from 0/2% on the DX thread. How would a RAM disk help that? The program is called from disk every second so HD access won't cause that. Not trying to dispute you, but it doesn't make any sen

Never said Konfab was like AveDesk :) Just said it's default widgets are 'prettier' than the default that come with Kaps and DesktopX. In my experience, Konfab is the hardest of the lot to skin; I'd say Kaps next, then DX, the AveDesk in ease of skinning. And yes you are definately right there, Kapsules is a great app and is more powerful than Konfabulator, but just doesn't have the marketing muscle.

Misinformation is doing Konfab no end of favours that is true. DesktopX is better. No question. But for a lot of users, its too 'good'. Brad summed it up earlier, people just want a few standard widgets that already exist, which when they are bored they can change the look of. They hardly ever want to change its functionality, and if they do, they'd usually as the developer of the widget. It cou

The CPU can jump, but if you set the animation to medium when you need to it goes back to 0/1% I'm happy I bought it, though must admit I don't use it that often. Will do during the Christmas season as it fits so well.

AveDesk 1.2 is a vast improvement over the current 1.1. You won't see many abandon it over Konfab. Of course there will be some, but the resource usage (potential I might add) will put a lot of users off, you know, the ones that count every single little bit of ram and flip out if anything users more than 1MB (which there are a lot of).

Look at it this way though... he's just had a ton of free advertising. Advertising to people who have not tried DX, Kaps or Ave before, and they will buy this instead. Even with the increased competition on Windows, he now has access to potentially 10,000x more customers. The fact is, this will do well. Probably too well, I don't think the Konfab site will stand up to the hammering it will receive Monday. The Mac community,

Nice article (brought back to life by adverts), but how many spam comments :-| buy viagra in cananda? Bloody spiders... some of them are quite funny though. Anyway, yup widgets are useful. It's nice to just have something hidden in the background, using no resources and have the ability to quickly call on it whenever you want.

Interesting quote by Brad - "One might argue that a smarter strategy would be to simply make a program that has highly skinnable simple programs that do those kinds of things and let people just make skins for them" So AveDesk then? j/j One what might be to make a user interface like Samurize for creating widgets. This could also include links to plugins etc that could just be dropped

Heh I'll pass the message on ;) So 7/6 days to Konfab being released... any further thoughts on this? Think it will do well etc? I'm definately going to give it a go, as I want to know how it stands up to the Mac version which so far has been flawless for me. Just interesting to see if they pull it off.

My desktop has an animated GIF of it if that helps. Doesn't show the extra control panel functions are have sound of course (wasn't meant for that) but it may be of interest. Just imagine it 1000x smoother. http://www.skindojo.com/septimus/ss/nd.gif

I'd lean to more the XML store, as for some reason the registry settings used by Mormegils widgets, which are perfectly good, reset. I though I knew why and how to stop it, but I failed and it means I cannot use any of his Core objects or widgets as the settings don't stay, they just reset to the default.
