mig: you can find all the classmates you like for free, but you can only contact them if you pay. neat, huh? The internet is becoming one, huge shopping mall. Not the nice one, either, that ugly one on the 'wrong' side of town that has half the shops empty at any given time and unsavory characters hanging out around all the doors. I liked it much better when no one took it seriously... Damn, dirty venture capitalists and IPO day-traders... Without them, 'startups' would have

Corporate mergers have reduced the entertainment industry to a few immense names, each with the lobbying and legal resources to buy both the destruction of anyone who differs with them and the legal means to hold onto those victories. They throw dissent out with their lawyers, and bolt the door with their lobbyists. Does anyone want the entertainment industry equavalent to De Beers? To think this whole thing has been about file-sharing is infantile. Do you really, really think that m

Wallpapers are more popular, imho, because people are never satisfied with the same from one day to the next. People seem to pick a skin and stick with it, for a few days anyway, but for some reason people need to change their wallpaper neurotically often, even wasting resources on apps to change them automatically or stream them in via the internet. I know that my non-skinner friends use 'wallpaper fashion' as a big hole to throw time into. I think to some people it is like strolling

A note on calibration apps. If your monitor is a reasonably new one, you will be in the small minority of those that calibrate, and so you might make what you see less-accurate as compared to what most people see. I know that what I see after using Adobe Gamma is very different from what I see when I go to the library or a friends house to double check the same peice. When I leave my monitor stock, the color-shifting is so small and uniform (on reasonably new monitors) that everything still l

That sucks, soooo bad. I feel yer pain. I once backed up my hard drive, double checked the CD, repartitioned and formatted, and never got the CD to read again... not in my computer, not in anyone else's. It happened to be the worst run of CD-writers HP ever made and, due to a class-action, they actually gave out refunds to all the people who bought them (as I found out, a month after the deadline...) Thoughts: - Partitioning is overrated. If you do it so that you

Cost is irrelavent, there are too many ways to make it cheap. What you need to be sure of is that you are *really* getting the domain, not just letting them buy it and lease it to you yearly. Find out if you are gonna be the administrative contact, or them. You should also make sure you can move it to another registrar whenever you want, and what they are gonna charge you to do it. Me, I'd stick with big names, I've seen the horror that is a registrar simply going out of business... You cal

You'll see more and more of it soon, as countries like Iran, China and other countries start seeing the profitability of hosting sites that need an untouchable locale. I dunno what will happen when non-western URLs are common. This is a huge problem that will be a driving force behind a segmented internet, I'm afraid. So many countries are trying to limit western influence, and at the same time beginning to understand the profitability of closing the doors to outside "legal intervention", or ev

MessiahWWKD: I dunno how they control internal trademark/copyright stuff. I do know that if you were to rip a Russian app like that, they could sue you here based on american law. odd, huh? Jafo: no doubt they didn't want to understand. If they acknowledged you they'd lose all those free graphics.

Unfortunately, reverse engineering is perfectly legal in Russia, and I am not sure what kind of copyright agreements they have with other nations. Last I heard, you could rip and resell about anything you like. So, the ISPs have no reason to delete them, since they are breaking no laws. Actually, the ISPs there could be liable for needlessly deleting someone's business account, as they would be here. If they 'did the right thing' and deleted someone's business, they could probably be

Not a bad picture at all. I'm not sure that it is fleshed-out enough, if you get my meaning. You see so much stuff like this that it takes some thought to make it distictive. Think beyond 'effects', and more on what you are actually protraying. Give it something concrete. All opinions, take them as such. Keep up the good work.

We have the misfortune of enjoying a hobby that falls into the category of 'personal decoration', no different that interior decorating or fashoin consulting. Just think of the pain that people who decorate other people's homes go through. "I want that there, and I want it colored pink... No wait, I want it blue and on the other side..." No matter what, they know more than you and they won't make up their mind until it is already done... Ask Jafo, I bet he knows a bit about that. <img src="h

I understand completely. I have had a chronic illness myself for about 10 years now, and when it comes out of remission there is no way to work. I normally find myself playing a lot of video games, watching long anime series, etc, for a year or so at a time. Find something relaxing to occupy your mind, I know that if I don't do *something* my mind continues to run on and on and whittles away at me. I think with the impressive list of things you have done recently, there is no reason

It is most worrysome to those of us that are egotistical, full of shit, and yet sadly unenlightened... I get so confused... what day is it again? and I can't find my other sock... Hippy? Tell me about the rabbits...

mgorbach: you don't have any skins, stop saying you do. Again, Winamp is not free, it is part of AOL. That is like saying that the Windows Media site is a free site. How much better is it to think your skins are helping to promote AOL/Time/Warner? I am beginning to think that you are really, really deranged. You simply will not give up the idea that ALL the sites you visit are commercial in one way or another. It costs thousands of dollars a month to pay for skin sites, you think pe

there is no 'community' without conflict. If members don't care enough to get angry every once in a while, then there is no cohesion to begin with. I've flamed frogboy and SD many times, mainly during times I felt like I was on the outside looking in, as our buddies did today. As long as skinners get treated well, I'm not gonna gripe anymore. As far as I am concerned the unwashed, consuming hordes are what is destroying the internet, and SD can't throttle them enough. Maybe

here here. nothing wrong with doing that every once and a while. Normally after I reinstall everythign I leave it that way for a couple of weeks. What you are doing is the right thing to do. You get fed up, and you walk off. Later, you'll come back, i bet. Others linger on and on griping. Just never slam the doors behind you like I have, so many times. You've got my respect.

p.s. if you are not talking as a skinner, and all the skinners here are disagreeing with you, who exactly are you bearing a torch for? The users? Go start a site list this and see how sympathetic to your monthly transfer. They'll bleed you dry, and move on.

????????????????? are you insane? or slow? or what? How is this different than anyone making money on advertising from the skins they host? Show me these free sites, right now. I demand it. Like i said, go now, go to Geocities, and upload your 'work' there. Sit and wait. When, after a year, you realize that no one is seeing it, you will realize what you are paying for here. As long as you can delete your work, and that SD isn't including it in any of their merchandise,
