As someone who has stubbed their thumb so badly that it had to be splinted for days, I know exactly what you mean. ...as an aside, just think of how dangerous we'd be with prehensile tails and feet!

You won't want to just tune in, probably. I luck up every now and then and find something interesting, but usually it is pretty bland. The great part about CSpan, though, is their web presence . They have their schedules up, and offer a LOT of their programs to watch online. One program that I get tons of insight from is their BookTV. Once I started watching it regularly, I found myself shifting up a level in awareness. Instead of getting
If you watch CSPAN you'll see that probably a third of the people in our Congress speak like this all the time.
That's what Christmas is all about... For you. A LOT more people in America celebrate Christmas than claim to be Christians.
I have done that. Some google map thingies are composite images of a bunch of little ones. I bet you just got one of them.
I dunno, maybe you need a bigger picture. Perhaps it is my eyes, but it looks like the face on mars. What is it?
I heard yesterday that 90% of all Americans celebrate Christmas in some way. I think that basically rules out that it is a Christian holiday anymore. When you consider it was yet another replacement for pagan holidays originally, it seems that just having a holiday has always been more the point.
Watch much CSPAN?
You have people who see Santa Claus and think giving and kindness, and you have people who look at Santa and see the Devil. You, reader, ponder the relative value to mankind of each.
"I've never understood the eating of meat rare....and I'm not trying to be insultive. Where I'm from meat has to be well cooked. " Meat cooked well done lingers in your stomach for like 24 hours, and passes through your innards like hunks of steel wool. Rare meat isn't so dehydrated and fibrous. It digests nicely.
All you have to do is imagine the qualitative benefit for the world between people believing in Santa as Father Christmas and people believing that Santa is the Devil. For some people there are no miracles on 34th street.
"To say thinks like Defense, CIA, FBI and alike are not essential is ridiculous. " To say that the billions we spend in the name of Defense, intelligence, etc., always GOES to these things is ignoring reality. Tens, even hundreds of billions don't.
"As do I not agree. There is simply no correlation." You need to learn the difference between correlation and causation. Where is your correlation? If Islam is a hateful, terroristic religion, why doesn't extremism bloom wherever there is Islam? Why does the US need to import terrorists, or other western nations with a large Muslim p
"And as for my ilk, I did not accuse you of supporting terrorism or even excusing it, just excusing the "silent majority" and blaming us for the sins of our fathers." I don't excuse anyone that is silent, and I have blogged against Islamic apathy as you well know. On the other hand, to say that Islam itself is a "violence-inducing ideology masqe
...and it only took two people to blow up the building in Oklahoma City. We have thousands of militant white supremacists in America, Gid. They claim that they march to the tune of Christianity. Christianity to blame? It isn't the 15 or the 19 or the 19,000 nutjobs that give extremism power. We have those numbers of Christian wackos here, as I said. Terrorism's power is the army of downtrodden, uneducated, miserable people who are willing to blame their misery on whatever scapego
"In response #9, you seem to be indicating the only difference between Christian and Islamic fundamentalists is comfort level. Maybe I read it wrong, but that seems to be your central theme." I didn't mention Robertson at all in #9 or anywhere else in this discussion, so it is a pretty cheap shot claiming that I equated him morally, or in any way
The only place I can find that I have mentioned Pat Robertson recently is this quote from a totally different blog. I was pointing out that it wasn't likely that any Muslim fundamentalist society would rise up in the West: "That won't happen in the west, period, any more than Pat Robertson will make America the next Imperial Christendom." <b
And since you are already offended at me, Gid, I'll risk a bit more and pose the idea that you aren't really a fundamentalist in the first place. You hold your cards close to the vest in most religious discussions, but even then you don't strike me as fundamentalist at all in your beliefs. Maybe you are coming from a different definition of fundamentalism. Wait... wait... this irks me. Please point out, Gid, where I morally equated Pat Robertson with bin Laden. I was gonna give
}As a fundamentalist, I have to tell you, there's not much push for a "worldwide caliphate" as you portray it. I have my beliefs, and others have theirs, but truly I've never asked for anything except the right to practice my faith without government interference." Which is basically my point... if anyone is listening. Christians in America don'
You really equate Islam with Nazism, Brad? You really think the problems present are inseparable from the religion? How do you validate that with your "universally positive" personal experiences with Muslims? Have your interactions with Christians here at JU been "universally positive"? Would you consider some of the fundamentalist stuff that passes for "religion" down in that section laudable? Given that we far more often see hatefulness and intolerance in our personal lives from C
The problem is there's no possible way deal with it accurately. They earmark money and find corrupt uses for it AFTER it is budgeted quite often. The fact that this "greatly complicates" things is their modus operandi. If it weren't greatly complicated we'd be able to see where they steal the money. When someone needs to find a job for their cousin's construction company, they decide to build a military museum and call it "defense". When someone wants to help out a crony's business,
You are infuriating, Dr. Guy. I don't know if it is because you just don't have the intellectual tools for debate, or if you are just too lazy to come up with a counterpoint, but I am damned sick of you and your ilk saying that anyone who differs with you is "excusing" terrorism. I, of all people, was accused of "cheering" for terrorists not a week ago by your ilk right here on JU. I don't excuse Islamic terrorism. I don't excuse the vast majority of Germans who were Roman Catholic.
"And it has been documented that none were "poor muslims". All came from well to do or middle class families. Very Similar to the SLA of the 70s here (Patty Hearst poor?). Quite simply, the Al Qaeda whack jobs you hear about are not dirt poor and barely subsistent. Usually, they come from well to do families. So comfort is not an issue." lol... a
Excellent article. In my opinion people who downplay the "spirit of Christmas" in favor of nit-picky Christian doctrine have usually rejected Jesus's true spirit long before. Once you reach the point that faith, hope, and charity are no longer the focus, you've lost sight of who Jesus was to begin with. After that, it's all just empty dogma, hypocrisy and fear.
The problem with your analgoy Bakerstreet is that while some would love to see a nation based upon the literal interpretation of the Bible, they are not burning, rampaging, pillaging and murdering to achieve their ends. They talk. Because they wouldn't want to endanger their comfort, doc. It isn't the Osama bin Laden nutjobs that make Islam fri
