Kobrano: Depends how you figure it. If Stardock hadn't hired overseas people back in '97/'98, chances are pretty good they would be bust right now, or at best still struggling. Instead, they've helped create a whole new line of work - making custom skinning solutions for companies and selling suites to individuals, as well as hiring more than a few Americans along the way. Isn't that worth something?

The skinning and customization market is still small, but growing, just as Stardock is small, but growing. Microsoft (for example) is a huge company and so can dominate many large markets. But large companies are not the only ones around. It is possible to dominate as a small company as well, if you are a small market. However, to do so it is important to keep your edge, and that requires hiring the very best people for the job, and that is really what
Let us look at the Bureau for Labor Statistics , the average wage appears to be $33,176 if we multiply $638 by 52 (probably generous since not everyone works 52 weeks!). And that is the average working wage for everyone in employment. If we look at data for Brad's area , and specify our rough sector (White collar, Professional specialty and technical, Priv
Yes. DesktopX scripting is a way to control your objects and do interesting stuff with them beyond the normal scope (for example, most weather widgets use a large amount of scripting to do their job). You can find out more about scripting by viewing the guide at the DesktopX resource page . Note that most online tutorials for VBScript (or JScript, if you choose to use that) will also
Black Xero, as I told you on IRC, news is being far more strongly filtered now. I think at this time only server admins have the ability to post news. Whether or not this will change in the future I do not know.
If Java is broken (and I know of no reason that any Stardock application would break it ), then I'd suggest you download the Java Runtime Environment from Sun and install that. I have to say that I have not heard these symptoms before in relation to Object Desktop etc. I know you think
No. Stardock are working on a beta version, and that is on Stardock Central as a beta/pre-release, however it is still considered "testing". If all goes well I would assume that it will be released for general distribution in the next version of WB.
I remember reading about Jef at university. It's sad that the pioneers in our field are dying off.
*snips out his own totally incorrect statement* :-)
Oh, and these might be interesting: WhyNobodyDeletesWiki and WhyWikiWorks . Those two wikis are some of the best developed in the world on the MetaWiki topic, you can learn a lot about user communities just by browsing for a few hours.
Hehe, yes, I decided that the Stardock article needed a bit of expansion (if you're interested, it looked like this before I had at it). So I added stuff! It's that simple. Wikis are very, very cool. I have spent a very significant amount of the last two months developing the Creatures Wiki to the
Yes, and I foresee it would lead to plenty of calls for admins to remove "low" grades. They have better things to do with their time.
To be honest, I just used LogonStudio to apply the themes, having learnt the language myself. It took a little reading , but it's well worth it for the things it allows you to do.
Citizen Skarnivorous , our resident WindowFX transitions expert has created a rather nifty tool that turns the tricky business of making a transition into something even I could do. I've tried it myself and was very impressed, so if you've ever wondered w
I've been spending my last month over at the new Creatures Wiki . The site is hosted for "free" (sidebar google adwords advertising) by Wikicities , which is run by (almost) the same people who run Wikipedia . It's been a great deal so far; we've managed to get to 100,000 words in just 6 weeks, and don't have to worry about thinks
Umm . . . it was less than one decade . . . Windows 3.0 release date: 22 May 1990 Windows 2000 release date: 6 October 1999 And I think you're underestimating Windows NT 4, which was released way back in August 1996. It wasn't perfect, but it was certainly pretty solid. Solid enough to kill Stardock's OS/2 market, anyway!
I suspect it will go on for quite a bit after 4 . . . Stardockians tend to work late.
I'd just like to note that making Windows was very much a team effort even then - even back in early 1990s the NT team had hundreds of people on it, and now it's probably a couple of thousand depending on how you count it. Just in case someone gets the idea that Stardock should write their own OS.
From the WB newsgroup archives: Skins can now tell office to use the luna blue or silver look via this attribute [Personality] MakeOfficeBlue = (1 = blue, 3 = silver, 0 = WB default) If you don't want to set it to blue or silver, don't add this attribute. The same values can be used in WB.ini in the [GLOBAL] section for overriding skins which don't have this attribute. --- You will probably have t
There have been a few problems with access to the SQL server storing user registrations. There are people working on it now. If it is not fixed in 24 hours, I suggest you contact [email protected] and ask them to confirm that the renewal went through correctly. They will be able to adjust your account (on Monday) if it did not. Sorry for the delay in your renewal!
Using a DXPlayer with DesktopX, which uses WMP (or iTunes, Winamp, Coolplayer . . .) but looks however I want the player object to look!
From IRC: If you have the animation moving to the left, chances are that you have the size of the animation image incorrect, or the number of frames is incorrectly set. For example, if you have too few frames then it will include the first pixels of the second image on the first image, and so the second image will be cut off, and therefore moved to the left.
sranshaft: Given the comments above, I've looked at it. I think I know how I would go about it. I have other projects that I am working on currently, and the visualization/video window container is the first thing I intend to add when I resume work on DXPlayer, but it's not been forgotten.
Well, I am, although more a developer than anything else. And, good news from the Webroot team! We have detected a definite false-positive with our definitions. We will fix the problem in our next definitions update that is released. Thank you for your time and patience.
Yeah, given the current state of CoolPlayer, I'd say breaking backwards compatability would only hasten a trip to oblivion. You saw what happened with Winamp! I made very sure to keep backwards-compatability with older versions of DXPlayer. Even then, I had to change a few small things in how they worked, and people still complained about that - I hate to think what they'd have done if I just broke all their objects. <img src="http://im
