The only problem I see with your idea (Id like to see as many Dune mods for games as people care to make), is that the essence of conflict in the Dune Books was Ground Conflict (not all sci fi lives in space)...something which GC2 is...well not so...uh....no. There was *no* space conflict in the dune books proper...I dont count anything not explicitly written by Frank Herbert...at least in the 'preferred" time period. You may want to look into an RTS game (SupCom boasts high modab

I'm not overly enamoured with the new espionage sytem either. But its early on, and Im sure Ive not mastered it yet. But thats another point in disfavor...In DL it was maybe overly simple, but it was also straighforward and grasped pretty much instantly. With the new system, you feel like to have to discover the "trick" to making it work. 1) To a first time player, it seems like the espionage system involves placing an agent, generated at great expense, on a planet for a minor p

In DA, there are now little simple "cube" hulls with many harpoints on them in each size category, so essentially you can use any of the "extras" ( of which there are many more Star trek style saucer and nacelle type parts in DA), as the base hull. In other words, you can build "star trecky" style ships much easier in DA, without relying on fan mods.
Actually, maybe a better idea would be to seperate the sporeship abilites into achievable milestones, so as to nerf, but remain fair in relation to some of the other races passive, "always on" bonuses. Maybe the first milstone could just be the ability to convert any planet into the eco-type friendly to your race with a cheap, spammable, ship module...forcing opposing civ to reseach the colony tech you start the game with to expand, or reducing their production on occupied plaent
The Bug Faces get first strike ablity??? In Gal Civ II I found them to be well like elves... annoying and hit hard but if you really land a blow on them they sorta fold. John W I found the Arceans an odd choice for the "super warrior" (first strike) ability as well. That seemed more fitting for the the Drengin. But again, I digress for being off-topic... Back ON topic, it would be great to hea
No, I omitted that one on the basis that military starbases and starbase defenses are complete wastes of time that no experienced player bothers with anyways. I don't buy that generalization for one second. It was an overgeneraliztion, I was sorry the second I posted it, and you replied before I could edit. But generally speaking, most experienced players dont bo
We're still missing reason #4: because small ships stack well with military starbases. 3 small ships get 3X the starbase bonus than one large ship. No, I omitted that one on the basis that military starbases and starbase defenses tech research are complete wastes of time that no experienced player bothers with anyways. See any one the the 20 other threads on that (seperate, but relevant) issue.
In DA, tiny and small hulled ships are of even more dubious value: * They can rarely ever be fitted with more than one engine and still have weapons, and therefore be speedy as someone above suggested, because of engine sizemod/speed nerf. At least, not untill youre nearly maxed technologically, by which time, it would be foolish to throw that much costly technology on a small hull which is not going to survive any real military encounter, and not neccesary to kill 1 HP troop/sp
Super ability or no,like it or no, sporeships are nerf-bait. Its essentially an end-game ability availiable far too soon.( does anyone think that being able to crank out planet-killing/planet-converting spore ships, independant of population 12 turns into a sandbox game sounds quite right?). Personally, Id bury it under a lot more pre-req techs in the tech tree, to ensure by the time anyone gets it, theyre still going to have to fight their way to a planet.(beyond slapping a single beam on a
Check out the "Hourus Heresy" books series based on the Warhammer 40k universe. Epic Space opera on a mytholigical scale. Primarchs, power armour, warp demons and Dreadnoughts. 'nuff said. WWW Link
you may want to sticky this thread - i'm sure everyone's too busy playing to (eat sleep work study) upload images. This is just a news post. The actual thread it links to is indeed stickied. Im actually "paralyzed" by the new content in the ship builder, and havent been able to do much of anything. Theres just so much... so MANY new pieces in DA, its a bit
Its not a perfectly concieved system yet, and could use some tweaking. You are, in nearly all cases, better off invading than researching colony tech. In the early game, when you actually need it, colony tech is far too time intensive, for a far too situational payoff, and early on, races will *generally * not trade it. You *need* weapon/military tech(mandatory for all game types, as soon as possible), and invasion tech is much more valuable for most game types, with a shorter p
The only starbase resources I don't sweat it on are the reds and the purples (i.e. military and research). The others are critical in my mind. And if I have to build a constructor anyway, may as well do it sooner rather than later. I can have my home planet building constructors while my outlying planets build colony ships. I am, however, heavily influenced by whether I later intend to go to war with competitors or not.
Screen navigation via mousing to the edge of the screen has always been too slow in GC, DL or DA. Navigate via click dragging, its faster, more economical, more precise, and you wont miss the other.
I think one of the early gateway military technologies gives you access to a crappy beam weapon, even though it isnt strictly a "beam weapon" tech. Like space weapons or militirization or something.
Tech rush to sensors is still valid, except that now, since the engine thing and the fact that engine tech costs too much to rush research early in the game for minimal gain, I dont just buy one super fast survey ship in addition to my flagship to shoot around and gobble up three anomolies a turn. Instead, thats actually what Im rush producing out early game, along with colony ships, so I have an entire fleet of surveys (plodding along at 3 or 4 speed) scouring the galaxy, so Im s
Being able to zoom out on the tech tree. The gameplay changes Im still getting used to , and the depth added the ship builder arsenal is frankly a little overwhelming...theres just so much. It'll take me a while to penetrate. But the tech tree is instant love...I never knew how much I wanted to be able to zoom out on that thing.
Just pick an official race and tweak their abilities, name, portrait, etc. Viola, custom race with all the inherent abilities PLUS your bonus points. Theres no real difference in the end result as a "unique" race, other than you get more stuff. The only reason to be an actual "custom race" is to get to (exactly) pick your starting techs, but its rarely worth passing up the native race packages.
I find myself needing to build many more money planets than I did previously to stay fluid ( not in the red). And thats with a +50 racial econ bonus. Its not so bad once you get stock exchanges, but the first couple tiers of econ buildings can be rough.
OK, now its gotten silly. In any event, back on topic: Such as it is not capable of ganging up on a stronger opponent, not that Ive seen anyway in the game Im playing right now in Dark Avatar, in my "manifest destiny" phase, I Initiated War with the pushover Krynn. Two turns in(which is still the very beginning of the war in DA, whereas in DL wars are over in two turns because of speed cheese), the Korath contacted
Not saying this to be a smartass, but did you consider that maybe you just got better at the game with time? Im told it happens , though I have yet to see it in my case.
The multiplayer argument is out of place here. Why is that? I mean there is no better measure for an AI than what human players do! Arguments for and against aside, a multiplayer would certainly provide more intriguing challenge than the AI. I can just imagine all the dirty tricks you could be suprised by, that the AI currently would never do to you! That would be a weird new universe!!<
Im all for continuing to improve the AI, as are Stardock. I too would love to start seeing more diplomatic events like explicit military alliances formed against nation x. But a sense of perspective is neccesary. There is no turn based strategy ( or probably strategy game in general) game in recent memory with a better "overall" AI, and that was true of Dread Lords, even with its vulnerabilities, let alone DA. ****************
Be aware that altering those settings can make for a completely different game than what was generally intended, or even what is frequently commented upon on the boards. Many strategies and commentary may no longer apply. A map where you get a free planet every 5 feet is not the same game as one where every planet is precious, and while you can easily excel without tech trading at the lower difficulties, at the highest difficulties when you cant keep up with AI production, it can be very difficu
