@ James009D - I have been unsuccessful getting the game to read modified tech files. I tried different directories, renaming files, etc. etc. and no luck. Please let us know if you have any success.
did you start a new game, and have the game option "use mods" enabled?
Yes to both. Really not sure what the problem is here. I have modded games before (including other Stardock games) so I'd like to believe I'm not completely clueless.
for XP its "My Documents\My Games\Elemental\" Ive been putting my stuff into the Items folder. Right now The game doesnt seem to allow seperate Mod folders, need to use the ones there already.
Tried that just now. Same result. Guess I'll wait and see if someone else has any success modding the tech files.
For Windows Vista: *Windowsfolder*\Users\*Your Username*\Documents\My Games\Elemental
Still not working for the Techs_Amarian.xml file. I used this directory (using XP): C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Elemental\Mods The changes in the CoreSpellBooks.xml file still appear in game, but not the Techs_Amarian.xml changes.
From what I've seen in the .xml files, you don't (at least from the tech tree).
Modding the core files wont take effect unless you delete the data.zip file in the /data folder. From what i hear, personally i avoid modding core files and just use new files in the mod folder
Ok thanks. What's the folder structure for the mod folder?
Ok, something's not right. I'm making simple changes to Techs_Amarian.xml and they are not appearing in the game. What gives? I have the file in the Units folder - no luck. Then I tried editing the actual data/English file - still no luck! Where is the game getting this info if not from this file? I also made some changes to CoreSpellBooks.xml, and those show up and work just fine. Any ideas?
Thinking more about this.... since magic was "lost" in the cataclysm, maybe ALL the books of magic (except maybe light/dark or whatever they're called) should have to be researched like Summoning is now. This would create a cost-benefit choice that actually requires some strategic thinking on the part of the player. If this were added in, would the AI be able to handle it? Could this be modded?
I also like your idea of adding the magic power to the game - define how much of each one you have, instead of only turning each type on or off.
Yeah - there's no strategy whatsoever here. Even Brad gives this away in one of the video tutorials when creating a custom leader; he says something about "I like to just take them all" in regards to the magic books. And all the default leaders have all the
The guy at my Gamestop (which still has a PC section) looked it up and told me that since it said "Rating Pending" that meant it probably wouldn't be out for "like a year". So I went to Best Buy, grabbed a copy off the shelf and went home.
Its been released two days now and you guys have already exhausted all available maps. Rage quitters?
That's not the point. The game box states "each game produces a new randomly generated world." No, it does not. We just want what the box says is included.
I guess that technically speaking we are getting a "random" map - the game randomly picks one of six maps. [e digicons]:-"[/e]

So how good are the mod tools? Could anyone open them up and make some decent maps? I'm tempted to buy the game and have a go at making maps. Can you make map scripts like in Civ 4? Or at very least modify whatever is generating maps by default? Do we have any options other than just deleting the pre-set seeds and getting the resulting horrible maps?
Making a retail box and getting it on shelves is a huge expense, and requires marketing and set deadlines in order to make (some of) that back. And each expansion of a game typically makes less than the one before it. Skipping retail means being able to deliver a beefy expansion where not doing so would mean delivering much less, or not being able to do one at all.
So why is Stardock charging retail box shipping if there is no retail box? I only paid five dollars for shi
