No, the ill effects of a tactic only occur if it succeeds. The devs decided that this way was less cheesy than allowing players to just invade with a single soldier and mass drivers to devastate planets at little cost. I've found the population cost to be of little concern next to actually building the transport and paying for the mass drivers (which would still have to be done even if I only sent 1 soldier). Besides, if your enemy has run out of ships to wa

I'm not sure what races you're playing, but consider playing as the Iconians, Korath, or Yor - they start with some of the colonization techs, so there's not as much pressure there. The exotic worlds aren't that big a deal, anyway - until you get the *advanced* colony techs, exotic worlds only have half prodution. Thalans are another good race for people having trouble. Because they can build factories so easily, new colonies can become productive much more quickly than other races. I
I had a bit of a snafu in a beta game, once. The pop-up came up saying that the Dread Lords negotiated peace with such-and-such race, I clicked on it, and lo and behold, I was brought to a dialogue screen with the Dread Lords. I clicked on "Peace Treaty", and told them to give me all of their techs...which they gladly did. Haha, if this doesnt show that Dread Lords Mega Event is broken then I dont know what does. I mean, hasnt th
I had the same problem when the Dread Lords event happened. In the Dread Lords On Parade scenario, they're a threat because they're there from the beginning and have time to build up their scary ships before you can even begin to research transports to invade them with. Hell, I haven't tried that in Dark Avatar yet, but they're probably worse now with the new way weapons work - my old strategy of attacking them with hordes of small, all-weapons ships might not work anymore. With the me
-- Right clicking a tech in technology window should give information what exactly does an improvement give. In example Laser II +1 beam damage, size 15 etc. Good idea, but showing size for components would be problematic. Doesn't component size vary somewhat according to what hull size you're using? -- Ship building window should have similiar buttons for components (newest, old, all) as does the planetary screen for buildin
Okay, cool. With my dialup connection, I guess it's the CD version for me, then. Heh, the disk would probably GET to my house by the time my connection finished that!
Thank you, sir.
Can I get SOME answer here on how big the download will be? Pretty please with sugar and live hornets and all the rest of the crap on top?
Does anyone have any idea how big the download will be?
Does anyone have any idea how big Dark Avatar will be when you're downloading it? I can't seem to find that information...if it's too big, I might have to order the CD version.
Good topic. 1) I agree with the people who want a better, more interactive UP...the UN in Alpha Centauri was about right, giving you the ability to raise issues, buy votes, or (after the right techs were researched) elect yourself supreme leader. Actually, while we're on the subject of Alpha Centauri, making the GalCiv 2 government more like AC's society modeling would be sweet. GalCiv's Imperium/Republic/Democracy/etc thing was pretty uninspired. (Though to be fair, I liked the Senate.
I don't know, Byram...I mean, during the attack, you get the bonus, which implies the tactic succeeded at what it was supposed to (disrupt the core, slam a rock into the colony, whatever). This opens up an interesting line of thought, though. I wonder if it should be possible for the defender to COUNTER a tactic. Like if you use a Mass Driver, the defending civ could spend money on an attempt to intercept it. Or with an information attack, they could spend money to disrupt the signals
That doesn't make any sense at all. So if I devastate half the planet with a mass driver but lose the ground war, all the devastation magically goes away? I would've preferred it the other way. If your planet is undefended, you're pretty much at the enemy's mercy anyway. Even if they can't beat your ground troops with theirs, logically they should be able to blast the colony from orbit, even until it's slag if they have the time/money. It makes interplanetary war more badass, as it s
This still doesn't explain why the AI sometimes wastes bonus squares with inappropriate buildings (ie ones that don't use that bonus).
Yeah, people pretty frequently wish aloud that minors could be more active. Oh, man, I don't! I remember back in GalCiv 1, when one patch let minor races expand just like the main races. I'd run into situations where major races got backed into
Damn, it's not automatic? My medals and other stuff appear on my posts, but I've never done anything special to make them appear... Although some of my medals seem wrong. I don't know why I'm "Evil", since I've logged more Neutral games than Good/Evil.
Come on, Malkuth (good user name, by the way), no need for hostility. If the original poster is bored and doesn't want to play on a higher difficulty, that's his loss. He did make one point I've come to agree with - the AI could use better building schemes. Even on Challenging/Tough, I've conquered worlds and seen some very questionable buildings. Why would they build their Economic Capital on a PQ 5 world? Why would they waste a +300% Research square with a non-lab building the plan
It seems your allies only join your wars when there's almost no risk to them. In my last game (all AI civs at Bright), I had five allied races when I got dragged into a war with the Yor, who outranked me militarily. Yes, it would seem my plan to have so many friends that no one would dare attack us backfired brilliantly. Except for the Altarians (who were the ones who dragged me into the war in the first place), none of my allies accepted any deal to attack the Yor, using
Ya cause somehow building a spaceship makes you win... cause a simple missle couldnt nock it out of the sky... yes... i will build a spaceship and therefore the world is mine hahahahhah So, you believe that early 21st century-level civilizations have missiles that can a) reach into outer space (an area that an interstellar craft cou
it's not a bug. if you trade laser 4 first, it won't want laser 3 at all. basically, it doesn't want to trade for lower weapons techs than it all ready has. That's why you offer Laser 3 first.
Between the "special worlds" and "custom opponents", I'm already sold. The rest is just icing. The interview on Gamespot was interesting, too. There are things that haven't been mentioned yet that I think would also make great additions. Think of this as a "request list". (Of course, I've already confessed that I'll buy the expansion anyway, but still.) Fixing a trade exploit. Right now, if you offer, say, Laser 3 and 4 in the same deal, the AI will c
Back to the original post! Space_Empires_V will have tactical battles and multiplayer. I'm interested in both of these games, but haven't played either one yet. What are the benefits of each game? SE5 isn't out yet, so who knows how it'll turn out? Graphically, it looks like it'll be quite an improvement over SE4 (which looked p
This reminds me that I wish they'd put a "Hide obsolete components" button in the shipyard. If I have Plasma III or whatever, there's no reason to still list Plasma II, Plasma I, Laser V, Laser IV, Laser III, and all the other crap I'll never use again. Having them there isn't just useless, it's annoying to have to scroll past all of it to see what Mass Drivers or Missiles I have, too. Granted, MOO2 had this problem, too, but it wasn't as bad because that game didn't make you researc
there should be more then 3 alignments... each alignment should have 3 within it.... No. Please, no. If that happened, GalCiv 2 would remind me too much of D&D. Computer/console RPGs have been stuck in that mold for decades now (if admittedly in a different way), with little sign that they will ever leave. It would be a damn s
If the patch finally fixes the race bonuses, I'd probably move out of that 4%. In the meantime, I wouldn't download a multiplayer patch, much less pay for one. Yeah, I'm not a majority there, but I've never been into it.
