Every TBS I've ever played has suffered from the same problem. At some point, maybe half way through or later the player either knows he has won, or knows he has lost.
From my own personal experience of many TBS games the biggest gameplay scenario which is disappointing with AI opponents is how they all always focus on the weakest target... which is fine for early game, but usually bad during late game. As a result by mid or late game

I would hope Stardock takes a look at the massive range of skills and abilities which exist for units and consider adding some of these into the upcoming Elemental game. AgeofWonders:SM also provides a large list of skills and abilities.

Your single sucide flier is going to get barbacued 9 out of 10 times, no matter how you try to look at it.
The thing is that is not so sad. There are quite a lot good fantasy books out there where humans make mostly or all the characters. So, I don't think it's a big problem that we have only "humans" in this game at the start. First, because there's no logical reason a game with elves/dwarves would be more fun. And second because it helps the devs and artists as they have one less problem to tackle, so they can put their efforts
The engine probably can sustain a very large set of setup options, more than many or probably most players would care to consider. But maybe the UI could offer players a basic choice about how complex you want your setup UI, e.g. Standard Options, Increased Options, and Maximum Options. I'm sloppily thinking of something like a 3-point toggle above a set of tabs.
Great suggestions... this will allow

Unless we see a serious sign that the devs are reconsidering their plan for the playable factions in the base game, this endless wrangling about orcs or no-orcs is really dull, and sometimes annoying whether or not you are in the 'wish we had elves, etc.' camp, which I sort of am, but less so the more of this sort of stuff I read. I'm particularly disinterested in seeing the devs make radical chang
The fact that all traits, abilities, and attributes of which you speak could easily be recreated in humanity alone in a fantasy game utilizing a variety of explanations is my only point in this discussion. Your arguments to me seem largely explanation based in that you like one explanation better than another which there is nothing wrong with but one dimensional.
You could say a specif

I agree and think it's a great idea... I haven't suggested this since it's probably a big project to provide such a realistic fantasy world, probably larger than any current suggestions. I would love to see many different levels for the Elemental realm as you've suggested. A section of caves could exist inside a mountain range allowing one player to choose sending his attacking army thru the caves, hiking across the mountains or using magic and/or flyi

The best way to identify micro_management problems is from testing a very large map with several human players. By mid_game if players are spending significantly more time managing one feature which has no fun value then some type of adjustment for the feature would be best.
I reinstalled AoW:SM with the 1.4 patch to test this, and that mechanic is not to allow the underdog have a better chance of fighting. One of your examples was the underdog sending air units to attack the approaching armies to cast spells on them and that doesn't work because the defender gets to act first, so your flier is going to get barbacued before it can act. And even if it survives and you can cast a spell, for example the best of
I personally don’t understand the logic behind the whole “if all the factions are human they aren’t as diverse as classic fantasy races.” I do understand the frequently used example of a wraith or ghost passing through a wall which is impossible for a “normal” human but this is really just a context argument it lacks true weight especially in a world with magic. The weather suggestion has been on the forums for awhile. Ideally types of weather should be something which can be seen approaching such as storm clouds, tornadoes, etc., . Overall dragons are extremely powerful and if Stardock is referencing Dungeon&Dragons than they might be magical and intelligent as well. Although possible dragon attacks should be very rare in my opinion.
