Digital downloads are nothing new. Speaking as another extinct dinosaur of the species BBS, where did we download the software for our systems from? Other BBS's. And yes, that even includes legit stuff. Wish i still had my RA2.50 key file as I'd love to weld it to the internet. Has STEAM won? No. Nor did ZMODEM. I don't think in this day and age one thing can actually 'win' on-line as things tend to evolve. A company will come out

Interesting, two pages and many days since I posed my question to Ironclad, in a thread that they were appearing in. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to take that lack of response as a "Yes" answer. So, yes, they do want my money and if it comes to them via (C) infringment they honestly couldn't care less. So it is not about morals or ethics. It's all about the money and as such all arguments from them mentioning anything else should be considered void. Why di

Something worth pointing out. BootCamp does require a copy of Windows which will add $$$ on to your quest. Both of my suggestions are free (one is free as in beer the other has a time limited demo). Ohh and no, the OEM version that came with your clapped out old Dell won't do... unless you know which sized sledgehammer to use on WGA.
The biggest complaint I have with copy protection comes around with multiplayer games. Consoles had always scored the advantage here, where one copy can typically support two players, or in some cases up to 4.PCs have no such system, because one PC is expected to be used by one person.
The original Red Alert had two disks in the packaging (Soviet and Allies) either could be used to start a multiplayer game and doing so was A-OK with

TBH, I'm on the fence. True the Black Freighter is being done on its own. Perhaps the squid missing isn't such a bad thing. I don't know, I've read the comic repeatedly so I'll probably avoid opening night and wait to see what other, none reviewers, opinions of it are. I'm also dubious about the PG rating the thing is getting; considering small, annoying, Frodo enamoured child utterly ruined Return of the King (at a midnight showing no less). If the local

In recent memory? Starscape. Stupid little game that appeared on sale in Impulse for some silly amount of money. Kept me going for a few weekends and for less than a cinema ticket. Homeworld 2. Made me hunt down Cataclysm and the original. Before that? Deuteros. Picked it up at a computer fair (back in days of yor when 16bit and 512KB of RAM were swish) still fire it up in HATARI from a Pompey Pirates image. Must try and find Magic Fly

I would agree to a degree. Good games need little to none value add... the perception of what makes a game 'good' is pretty much up to the individual (i.e. you like Spore, I'm not it's biggest fan) and all the 'plastic crap and cloth maps' in the world will not change someones fundemental optinion of the game. Perhaps I'm just looking back with rose tinted spectacles, but I do kind of miss those maps and the Janes sections of manuals in simulations. I also agree that the 1AM eff

Yes. It would be nice if IC would post the decision tree the AI is following. It would at least offer some idea as what the AI is 'thinking' when it surrenders (and potentially generate a stronger AI as we find the blind alleys it can get itself in to). Setting Victory conditions would also be an excellent move.

As someone else pointed out, most of these stores make their money from console games (be it new or used), the PC section of a store, if there actually is one, is just a minor nod to get the occasional foot traffic sale: I've seen such places as Game, Virgin Megastores, HMV and the like selling what are now budget PC games in their original (and dusty) initial release packaging... for full RRP. It's also true that console publishers would love nothing more than to kill off the s

I think the Entrenchment AI sometimes surrenders when it realises the situation is hopeless, such as "War Fleet Bacon Maker" appearing behind its defensive lines. And I've seen an AI get the hump with pirates in original sins, although they never capture the base. Oddly enough the AI doesn't seem to employ the super weapons... it could be really vicious if it did.

As an addendum I'll pull apart one of my more recent purchases. Sins of a Solar Empire. Now this game cost less than the AAA title but more than a budget offering (£20 give or take an odd number of pence for the digital only version). Their is no box, DVD case, printing of any kind. Their is however, AFIC a PDF manual tucked away in the games install folder which covers most aspects of playing the game, installation (obviously a clone of the retail versio

Go to a store. Buy a AAA title (such as Spore) now also buy a budget game (such as Homeworld: Cataclysm) and return home. Sit there and look at the games. Now because you are on these forums you probably have some form of insider knowledge about how much programmers are paid, project over runs and how much it costs to build a game. Ignore that and put yourself in the mindset of a consumer (yes yes, OM NOM NOM NOM... up the IQ slightly... thanks). </
