About the only thing in that list I wouldn't buy is Society (sorry guys, I don't do persistent online games, no matter who makes 'em). I would encourage a little caution with the RPG. You mention Baldur's Gate and Planescape, but those were actually very different games and, IMO, Planescape was nigh unplayable. Yes, I'm going to get a ton of hate for that, but if I want to read a novel I'll go to the library and pick one up. Planescape sacrificed gameplay for story (it was essentially the text e

I expect that if they did take class 1 planets, there'd be a load of people complaining about how stupid the AI are concentrating their resources on such worthless rocks... Those people aren't very bright, frankly, those things end up class 16 in no time. At high tech levels they're among the best planets in the game.

You are living in the past Don't kid yourself that only people "living in the past" prefer solo play. Even most of those 8 million WoW players you're so quick to point to play the bulk of the game solo. Gamers come in all flavors, from introvert to extrovert, same as in real life. Those of us that prefer single player games have been poorly served by the recent generations of games, GC2 is a rare exception as far as design priorities.

Your right, I was thinking that my two suggestions would be taken as doing #1 first, and then going for #2, but I guess I didn't make that clear. Ah, I see. Yes, once he's mastered point 1 any remnants of his problem should disappear with point 2.

Turn up the difficulty. Actually he needs to turn it down. The game "always turns into a war" because he's not keeping up in production, research, or anything else. The AI sees him as weak, then, and decides to take him out. He seems to be upset that they're always choosing to eliminate him militarily, because he doesn't understand that influence and diplomacy are reserved for civilizations you can't just roll over.

Anyhoo, for any of you kids out there who have never played (or heard of) Master of Orion 2, it is the spiritual predecessor of Galactic Civilizations. The original GalCiv came out in 1993, so no, it's not. GC2 integrates some ideas from MOO, Ascendancy, and a number of other 4X space games of the last decade and a half but it's "spiritual predecessor" is pretty obviously GalCiv1. Personally I'm really tired of MoO fanbois trying to turn this g

In my games, spies I place are usually killed in 1-2 turns. Don't place them one at a time, build up a reserve and dump them on the same target. Intel spikes work quite well. The other thing to consider is that the frequency of removal is going to be dependent on the economic strength of the target. It's easy for a wealthy civ to deal with a spy or two, but it's problematic for a poor one ot put the resources into counterespionage.

maybe they ought to let you select what mega events are included. it'd be an easy way to please both sides. I honestly think that's probably the best answer. It'd leave the devs totally free to make events as "mega" as anyone could want, since the people that don't like them could just turn that specific event off. Do that, then give me a Dread Lords event that rocks my world. <img src="http://images.stardock.com

I also think it might be best for Stardock if they left it alone. The remanent MoO fan base has MoO2 placed on such a high pedestal I honestly doubt there's anything that any developer could produce that would "live up to the name" in their eyes. For the rest of us, that never really cared about the franchise anyway, the name wouldn't carry any marketing power. It's like fans clamoring for a remake of their favorite movie, you're never going to get the same thing with a remake, so

No you are incorrect No, I simply have different priorities than you do. I don't care about MP, and I certainly don't care about tactical combat (which is only useful in MP anyway). If SD released a MoO4 it'd be a game from them that I wouldn't have an interest in purchasing, I suspect, and that'd be unfortunate since it'd take time away from games they make/are making that I care about. So for me, I have to say, I'd just as soon the MoO series st

Who exactly is the winner? Let's say you set up a game, you, Korx, Yor, Drengin, Korath. You get XEthics, go evil, and spread the tech around. Who wins? Everyone, presumably, ala an allied victory. For the same reason (it'd be possible to win while sucking it hard) I'd turn that one off too.

Also, in large and huge galaxies ships are obsolete by the time they make it 20 turns to the other side of the map – they are very late to the party! This is another reason I love this event, actually. It gives the whole game a very "Ender's Game" or "Forever War" kind of vibe.

50 Replies 28,282 Views

Can you even flip an ally? That doesn't seem to make sense. Yes, you can, and yes, it's a pretty obvious exploit. It's a no risk tactic and a free win, and I'd really like to see the AI react with great hostility towards it. Culture flipping a planet arguably ought to cause an alliance break. You don't stay allied to a power that's financing insurrection and revolution in your territory, after all.

Influence and Diplomacy are pretty much shut off as viable routes. You must be joking. Diplo's still the easiest win in the game, followed closely by research and influence. Military conquest is still the hardest, which is probably as it should be. The AI's gradually getting less passive about standing there and letting you win by non-military means, which is a very good thing, but to claim that this makes those non-military options impossible is... well

James, if you have a copy of DL then there's a rebate with your purchase of gold. If you buy DA directly it's $30, if you buy Gold and own DL you get $10 back, so it all works out about the same. That's reasonable pricing for an expansion, so I don't understand your complaint.

I've never seen a consistent pattern. Usually one weapon tech will gain predominance in the galaxy as a result of being traded around, but it's totally random as to what that tech is and the bigger military powers (Drengin, Korath etc) will tend to go their own way regardless.

all three times the ranger showed up was a time when nobody had anywhere near the tech to best it. in one game I had two, and was able to rampage at will with single rangers going wherever they pleased... Are you patched up to the latest? I thought they'd fixed the early ranger problem. I've never seen one turn up early enough in a game to have the sort of impact described in DA.

9 Replies 4,062 Views

The ranger generally isn't destabilizing. It's too slow, and by the time they turn up it'd be unusual not to be able to build something that can best them. While the artifact one might be destabilizing, it's so slow as to be essentially irrelevant. I've never seen the target of that event do anything in my games, actually, other than suck and die.
