I couldn't agree more. It's really very simple, if you're a new player you should turn mega events off . They're not for you, they're for those of us that keep finding ourselves at the end of the game with a stagnant, dull galaxy that needs a good hard kick in the butt. The pirate event is fantastic for this. The Dread Lords event badly needs to be tweaked up to make it much, much worse rather than simply providing a free planet to the first civ to get a transport there. Mega events

I'm not a newbie to GalCiv, just to DA. I won my first game playing at Normal vs the Drengins and their hordes of ships. In the second game, the first event to happen was a pirate infestation. They stomped everything except the mines of every player in the galaxy. This happened quite early in the game - I was still only producing

When you destroy a pesky scout ship, the civ goes to war with you immediately. When you spam influence starbases around one of their planets and steal an entire planet, they don't even seem to mind much. That is absurd. There are countries who would go to war with other countries just for destroying some bothersome ship, plane, building, or even single citizen, but if a country just spams them with KF

If you're still learning the game you should really turn off mega-events. When did they spawn? I've never had them turn up early in a game, and when they turn up late they're kind of pathetic. They start out defenseless, so you just send a transport, invade, and get a free high PQ planet.

I'm pretty sure I still have an Original CD of it in my computer CD folder. I always like the wormhole map it generated. With a better AI it could have been really fun, pre-built choke points, interesting aliens... Yup, it was an awesome game that ultimately fell prey to the traditional 4x game problem: Once you were fighting the AI and not fighting the game (that is, once you really understood how everything w

I still do have a problem with custom races. I don't see why I can't have the computer play my races the way I want them to without modding. I think that you should be able to have your race that you created use the equipment that you want them to have. All being able to define which techs an AI uses would accomplish is making them easier to beat. When the game says you can design ships for them, it means you can create a ship style, a look that their sh

If you don't like mega events turn them off. It takes far less time than writing a venomous, irrational rant on a web forum.

Yup, was my favorite space 4x (though you had to use the aggressor AI patch to make the AI do much of anything really). GalCiv's a better game, really, but captures the old spirit of Ascendancy nicely IMO.

I tend to agree that the event should be kept but renamed. The Dread Lords are a good fit and need a psychotically huge buff, this would do it. A new pirate event, more "piratey," could be included too. Something like a rash of small, lightly armed, very fast ships that play on trading lanes and other vulnerable targets.

How would an embassy and cultural base be considered aggression? It wouldn't be. Suffusing a Russian republic with enough diplomatic and cultural Americanism that it eschews Russia and declares itself part of the United States, on the other hand, would prompt a very hostile reaction. The "we know waht you're doing" modifier is probably sufficient for when influence is being applied, it's the reac

In Dark Avatar 1.5X (the internal build) the AI keeps track of how many planets have culture flipped and now takes that into account in its relations very very strongly. It only does this at intelligent or higher, however. That's fantastically good news, thanks for letting us know. Are the AI's going to be better equipped to wage their own culture wars as well? I don't think I've ever seen a computer opponent wa

To #3, you can also build starbases at the edge of your current range in order to extend it. Now why didn't I think to mention that? I do it all the time, too...

1) Not really. Miniaturization makes all hulls have a little more space, while the hull techs give you access to much larger hull classes. 2) Then I don't understand why it won't let you move it to the open space. That's either a bug or there's something abotu the situation I'm not understanding. 3) Well, this is where miniaturization comes in handy, but in general life support modules are quite small. How far away is the target, anyway? Fighting long distance wars in

I don't see why gaming is singled out as an invalid and unconstructive hobby. Because every generation has to have something to blame their kids problems on, and video games fill that niche for this one. Generally I think video games are far more constructive than past offenders, like comics and TV, because they're interactive and many of them require some thought. The twitch variety have been shown to develop reflexes and hand eye coordination, whereas

Military victories are generally much more challenging to achieve, whereas diplo victories are dirt easy, so that makes a lot of sense to me really.

1) Miniaturization increases the capacity of your hulls, allowing you to stick more stuff on your ships. 2) That's odd. Is the ship in question surrounded by ships of that race or something? 3) Yup, life support is what you need, and specifically you need to put life support modules on your ships.

They're not supposed to be balanced, they're supposed to be VERY strong and provide an abrupt and unexpected challenge. In short, now an again they should make games that weren't close become close. If you don't like them, just turn them off. For me, I want to see several of them turned up considerably. The Dread Lords should spawn with some HUGE fleets, rather than just being a free planet. I'd like to see groups like the Jagged Knife be considerably more active once they pop u

Yup, PQ <5 tends to produce 5 or 6 tiles at each habitat improvement tech. These things are absolutely golden future investments, as a result. Unfortunately the AI doesn't seem to have figured this out, but I trust that'll get pinned down in an update.

I wish I could find the posts you are refering to. Other people have told me the same thing, but my searches for "Frogboy" aren't showing me any of his comments about culture. Hopefully they will improve it sometime. In my opinion, an influence starbase should never be very near a planet without its owner becoming alarmed/angry. At present, he doesn't even notice. Right here: https://forums.

I bought DA anyway, hoping that it will be someday fixed. Brad's said he's trying to fix the AI's passivity to culture in several other threads on the topic, for what it's worth. He's also said it's a careful balancing act because you don't want it to be impossible to win culturally. I can see where he's coming from, certainly, although I have to admit that right now it seems much too easy to win culturally while the AI stands idly by and smiles at

Yeah, there does seem to be some diplomatic glitchiness. Last game the Drengin attacked me "because of your war with our friends the Drath" when I was not, in fact, at war with the Drath at all.
