The GalCiv2 engine was developed by Stardock. Sins of a Solar Engine use the Iron Engine, which was developed by Ironclad. -HM

My work connection is fast, but since Impulse doesn't tell me the transfer rate (hint, hint), I couldn't tell for sure if it was being utilized. I should probably just play the game instead of messing around with all the Stardock technology, hah! -HM
DA seems to have finally got the message and now says "Ready to restore". I wonder how long I'd have to wait for DL's 1.4 GB?
Longer than one would like. It was definitely speedier on my 2 GB RAM/dual core desktop than my 1 GB RAM/single core laptop. But faster than re-downloading. :) I second the motion for progress bars. And something that IMMEDIATELY comes up when restoring from archive saying it's working. Right now it does nothing, which is baf
I hear ya. I thought for a while it did nothing too...especially since I was trying it off a burned DVD. But it should work if you do the restore from your drive. I hung in there because I saw my hard drive was churning away, even though it took a while to get a message. Yes, Stardock REALLY needs to work on their status messages. :) -HM
Addendum: the restore works the same way you described (taking me to the Updates - Downloads & Installs tab). But if you click back on "My Games", and wait a bit, you will eventually see the status change to something else (I forgot what it says first, probably something like "restoring archive"). It does take a while to see that first message. And wait for a number of different messages for it to complete. Especially since one is something like "complete", but it isn't really comp
What happens when you try to restore? For me it would not work from a DVD I created. The DVD just spun and nothing happened But if I copied it to my hard drive it worked fine. It didn't have to be in the Impulse "backup" folder. I just copied them to my desktop temporarily. -HM
Let me just say that when I archived my GalCiv2 stuff last night, with the intent of restoring them on my work PC this morning, I FULLY expected to have the problem you did. For whatever weird reason, however, it actually put the games in the directory structure I have listed in "My Games" (Advanced Settings - Folders). Which, incidentally, is different then where they're installed at home, so it isn't pulling the directory structure from the archives. So my assumption was that it got
Did you change where games install to in the Impulse options? I did that, and when I restored from archive, it actually put GalCiv2 and the expansions in that folder. If your registry keys are pointing to wrong locations, then you'll have the issues you did with installs ending up int he wrong place for the expansions. I experienced the same thing. -HM
Did you add your serial number to Stardock Central? -HM
Not that Stardock pays much attention to pirates, but that just hands them the game on a silver platter. The archiving functionality works pretty well, and I suspect this will be the method they continue to use. Just like [link="http://www.steampowered.com"]some other popular electronic delivery system...[/link] -HM
I used to worry about this sort of thing when Valve first put Steam out there, and it started getting really popular. And I still worry about it to some degree (it's my nature). But honestly, by the time these companies go out of business, you probably won't want to play these games anymore. You'll be all interested in some crazy holographic something or other. These also won't work too well on your PC (or whatever replaces the PC in THE FUTURE). So if after that period of ti
The postmortem on Gamasutra.com implied that there would be some interface enhancements in 1.1. Next week Ironclad also plans on releasing a hotfix for the multiplayer sync bug, so be on the look out for that. -HM
No problem Brad; I'm sure it's been a rough day. Good luck! -HM
Brad, the "Create Custom Opponent Button" is greyed out for me and I am 100% positive I deleted the Twilight directory under "My Documents\My Games" before installing. The process I followed: -uninstalled Twilight Beta -deleted main installation folder -deleted Twilight user data folder under "My Documents\My Games" -installed Twilight -HM
The Impulse archives are made specifically for it, so yes, you need Impulse installed. I just archived all of my GalCiv2 stuff in Impulse, and here's what I got: GalCiv2: 1.24 GB Dark Avatar: 254 MB Twilight: 347 MB -HM
If an application only has the zz change in version number xx.yy.zz, then it's considered moot. But I did it anyway, and that's where I discovered the issue. Franco, how did you install your Dark Avatar to begin with? Mine was done quite a while ago using SDC, and because it was done it that way, the proper registry keys were not in place for Impulse to see it. And that's why I ran into this issue. -HM
DEC42, Sins isn't those games. As Izaroke said, Ironclad makes so many changes at a low level that it makes the save games incompatible. There were plenty of posts and warnings saying that the patch was incompatible with old games. There was nothing preventing you from finishing up your old game with 1.03 before patching. -HM
Who wrote this postmortem? It's not attributed to anyone. -HM
Franco, Twilight will install properly as long as the beta is uninstalled (or if it was never there). The problem is with Dark Avatar. For some of us the small update from 1.80g.102 to 1.80g.103 screws up because the DA registry key is not correct. This was due to a hack that had to be done to make Impulse recognize Dark Avatar in the first place. -HM
For the purposes of not having to traverse Stardock's forums, I'll repost the solution to getting Dark Avatar updated properly in Impulse. To make sure the 1.80g.103 Dark Avatar update works properly, go to this registry key: hkey_local_machine\software\stardock\drengin.net\galciv2\darkavatar Change the "exe" value to "DALaunch.exe" Change the "Path" value to the FULL location of where Dark Avatar is installed on your PC. For most, I suspect it will be "C:\Pro
I fiddled with this and came up with a solution. The forum post I made is [link="https://forums.stardock.com/310289"]here[/link]. The culprit is the Dark Avatar registry keys. The structure of them for Dark Avatar has to be exact or else Impulse will attempt to download the whole thing and install it in the wrong location, screwing up your main GalCiv2 folder. -HM
I ordered the CD version... ahh hope it comes today... or tomorrow after work would be nice. But I live in Kalamazoo MI... hopefully doesn't take longer then that.
It's going to take about two weeks before shipping starts: [link="https://forums.galciv2.com/310280"]https://forums.galciv2.com/310280[/link] -HM
Alt-Tab is just the kiss of death for a lot of games. I agree with Vinraith. -HM
It's possible the DVD went bad. Unusual, but it did happen to me once with Oblivion. Worked fine on first install, months later I could only see a few files and folders on it, and now my PC just churns on it like it' chewing gum. If worse comes to worse you can always install it over the Internet via Stardock Central or Impulse. You do, of course, need a valid and unique serial number to do this. -HM
It's there. Folks just need to uncheck the show beta checkbox in SDC. And maybe update the XML data. Argh, late to the party. :) -HM
