'In any real-world economic system, a tax rate of 100% will cause economic activity to drop to zero very quickly. I haven't tried it in GC, but I would hope that the economic model would penalize you more than just by approval ratings sinking.' It does, but not directly. Sinking approval ratings means sinking morale, and morale figures into alomst everything else somewhere along the line. 100% tax rate without all morale improvements, techs, and resources means you highest planet's mo

'how often does auto-save function saves the game?' It's adjustable. The setting doesn't display in the UI, but it can be altered in the data/perfs.ini file. Default is 12 turns, I usually change it to 6 or 4 turns.

'My observations generally parallel Arturus's with the following exceptions:' These aren't so much exceptions as they are elaborations, but they are things I should have mentioned. In the case of the min morale for pop. growth, I hadn't noticed that it had been pushed up to 51%. 'I have seen planets with morale as low as 4%, so I assume a morale of 1% is possible.' I've had planets with a morale of 1%, and I've seen planets with a morale of 0%, but never more

Yesterday I ran into an odd bug on the reseach complete screen. When I pressed the done button to close the screen and choose what to research next, the research droid and tech outline animations simply restarted and the description text for the tech dissapeared. Trying to close the window by either pressing the Done button or the ESC key just caused the animations to restart again. Since the game didn't actually crash, I have no crash log, and the only unusual message in the debug.er

'I'd like more information, specifically understanding the components of economy, production, research and morale . . .' There's too much detail involved in production/research to specify anything more that a general 'this is good, this is bad' in anything short of a small book. The general gist, from outward appearances: A planet of a certain class produces a base amount of production, regardless of population (I determined this part by way of colonies of pop. 1 on several di

'You are right, Art. The Death start couldn't use its primary weapon on the fighters, too fast. It did have turrent towers and fighters of its own, so attack of 0 is kinda low.' The turret towers were defensive armaments, which are already accounted for by building defensive improvements before you finish the Terror Star construction, and I already accounted for the fighter fleet (not to mention the fact that GalCiv already does that too [Attack Drones, et. al.]).

Honestly, I think the Terror Star shouldn't have a significant attack score. Using the Death Star as an example, as has already been done in this thread, it could only attack capitol ships. Actual fighters were too fast for it to aim at. That's why it was accompanied by a fleet of Star Destroyers and their ship's compliments.

'what do stations generate, if anything, if built on resources outside of a sector with a planet or influence controlled by you the player?' Resources affect the entire civilization. It's other effects usually only affect that sector or the directly contiguous sectors. If there are no planets in any of those sectors, then those modules would have no effects. In the singular case of Influence, if it's high enough, it can bleed off farther, but it takes alot of influenc

Check the GCImp.IMP file. In previous betas, Re-Education Center incorrectly has the entry 'IMPROVEMENT Secret Police' and GalCiv gets confused as to which one is which. There was a Trade Good and an Achievement that had similar incorrect entries, but I think they were fixed in the last update.

'That's right. Setting any amount of espionage against the Alexians sets it against one of the major race AI's, not the Alexians. If these guy's are gonna be able to research tech a mile a minute, at LEAST I ought to be able to peek!' The Espionage and Destabilization sliders are disabled entirely for minor races. When you open the Foreign Polocy screen with the Minor Races tab active, the Major race that's listed first in the Relations tab is selected instead of the first Mino

'3) In the OS/2 version, users could modify the text file that was used for projects and wonders. Can we still do this?' All of the files in the data directory (not counting the Save Games subdir) are plaintext files containing the game data. The extentions tell you what type of data is in the file: .EVENT, .TECH, .SHIP, .ANOMALY, .RESOURCE, and .SBMODULE are abvious. .str is the language string data (something missing from here is the source of most 'String not Found' errors). .IMP

Destabilization seems to reduce AI morale, and can eventually cause wholesale rebellion. As for tech theft, last I heard, that's one of the changes going into Beta 4. No word on whether/how counterintellegence is going to be handled that I can recall.

'I don't know if this is something that happens with other PC manufacturers or not, but it would be a good idea for anyone to be aware of whether or not the manufacturer of his/her PC does this.' Sometimes it does, but it's not as common as it used to be. My soundcard is a Yamaha OPL-3 based card, but I can't use the most recent OPL-3 driver (although the release just before that does work, and better then the OEM drivers). Computers from Gateway and other manufacturers that s

'In order to test for galciv i won't need to connect to ANY servers? (sept when dowloading) unlike in steller frontier in which you have to connect to a server in order to make a "accout/hero"' Updating and submitting scores to the Metaverse are the only times you will need to connect, and submitting scores is optional. And just to note, you don't need to go online to play Stellar Frontier, either. I haven't actually connected to the SF Nexus for a year or so except to downloa

I've seen Hyperion Manufacturing Center list at 2000bc + 70bc for 100 months from Mitrosoft in beta 3E, and in 3C, I had Mitrosoft regularly offer things like 120bc + 4bc for 65500 months for Habitat Improvement.

'I am not sure what causes the treasury to go haywire like that. IT looks like a ULONG is getting thrown in there or something.' The last time I saw this bug, the AI's economy rating was bugged up too (something around 1.1 million). Which is the cause and which is the effect is uncertain, but the two have always appeared together in my experience.

'Something I left out of my post: Building a star base on an "influence" resource (the blue one) gives the builder influence in every sector of the galaxy. In fact, all of the resources seem to be very important, maybe too important, to winning the game.' I can't say for sure in 3E yet, but it did not do this in 3D. I had three influence resources with all of the mining modules and still had 0 influence in at least 10 sectors.

'Some would surrender to each other, but the planet would change to grey on the map, and the icon on it would change to a space monster. I think that was the ones that surrendered to yor.' In this case, it's because they surrendered to the Space Monster, which is treated as a seperate civ, but incorrectly has the name Yor Confederacy in save games, and thus presumably in memory while the game is running as well.
