Alright- I just finished up my first game. Nothing special, just a decent win. But I've got questions for folks. Empires - How do you join one? Something tells me I'm not going to get a nice big splotch of color on the map playing by my lonesome. There's an obvious way to create an Empire, but I'm not seeing how to join up with one. Ships - It only took me a few weeks (game time, fortunately ) to realize t

I wouldn't mind seeing uninhabitable planets being used as a sort of micro-starbase. - Extend operational range. Like a normal starbase, they'd allow your ships to travel further. - Mineral resources. A series of upgrades, possibly maxing out at some low number, that boosts military, social production and trade within a set distance (say, 4 tiles radius). - Corporate allegiances. You can set them up and get them running, but their allegianc

I do something similar to the above- I've saved hulls that've been stripped of all functional components. That way I can go in, upgrade them, and have them fit watever design I want. I don't need a lot of different hulls, just some basic ones that I can differentiate between. For instance, I've got only one ship design for the Tiny and Small ship classes, but I have three for the Cargo class. Why? Because I'm not likely to follow multiple weapon/defense paths in one game, unless I go

Are you sure? The yellow tiles are those that are available after soil enhancement right? I checked, that when my planet said class 10 (before selecting netural), there was really 10 usable tiles (including soil enhancement)! Keep in mind that not everything shows up at once. If you don't have Soil Enhancement, you won't see tiles you could ge

Agreed with the ally thing. . . was in a game with one really strong AI opponent, I was second power wise but far behind. So I allied with the No. 3 Power, which combined roughly equalled No.1's power. The power guy declares war on me, I assume my flank is protected by my ally an focus 95% of my ships at a full frontal attack. . . Everything is going great. . . maybe to gr

There's more than that, I think. I've seen four varieties. There's the green and white one with the snakey arms (think he's the 'good' bot) the blue 'June Cleaver' model, the black and silver 'tall head' model, and the multiarmed alien model (which I think is evil).

The biggest change I've noticed was how the computer reacted to me developing a high level of influence. Where before it just looked over at me and sort of said, "Oh hey- he's getting big," and then did a little work on building influence, now it affects diplomatic discussions. Despite all sorts of things in my favor, relations were Cool. Of course, they also reacted to the fact they'd been entirely outflanked by someone with a much larger military- 'Don't kill me!' I'm going to boos

Morale, Research, and Planet Quality are my big picks. I'll then pick up Social Production or Economy via the political party, depending on just what I grab. My theory is this- Research is key for flexibility- I need to be able to adapt to a changing environment. If I end up facing the Torians on my porch, I want to be able to wage an Influence war. If the Drengin are to my left, I'll need advanced weaponry and ships. If I get halfway through the game and need to switch things around

Perhaps the AI is doing something similar, prioritizing the colonization of more remote planets over local ones? I doubt that, just because of the way we're set up- I'm squashed between the Thalans and one side of the map- I think there's a sector and a half between home planets. They've grabbed one system on the border, colonizing two planets

Alright, I started up a game to try out the 1.1. Simple setup- everything's Abundant, Small map. Scattered stars, Very Fast research, me (Drakh) and the Thalans.... ...And they did it again. They colonized the PQ 4 world in my home system. Why does the computer do this? It's not as if there was a lack of planets to choose from- we're still at the opening stages of the game. There's closer planets, there's higher quality planets, there's no chance they'll get my home planet to switch s

I've seen this, but only on planets that I've taken over- I figured it was just the AI demolishing things before the invasion fleet arrived. The only other time I've seen the AI 'go dumb' has been in games where it's basically been hammered into the ground from the outset. Both the Yor and the Arceans I've seen get surrounded with all nearby planets colonized by someone else- it's like they look around and think, "Well... .

Flagships are a medium ship with a survey module, several life support systems, and I think Ion Drives. So they're a few skips and a jump ahead of the normal curve. I imagine you could go for a 'blind' setup, but that'd just slow things down as people sent colony ships out into the grey of uncharted space and worked on Life Support and Sensors I so they could get a few light scouts bouncing around the map.

I'd guess the autopilot's trying to pass through the square- which is causing a combat reaction. So your best bet would be either unclick autoexplore and move around the target, then reclick it, or possibly click 'autoretreat.' I don't know if that'd keep the ship from bumping into people or not- but it seems like that'd make sense.

Late Game With the Thalans in retreat on the cultural and military fronts, and the Arceans dead in the water, it didn't take long to hit 73% influence in the galaxy. With more trade routes opening up and the Thalans using freighters to scout out planets, it looked like it was just a matter of time. Either war would break out, or the Drakh would slowly wrap their fingers around victory. A second Influence Starbase next to t

Mid-Game As I'm preparing to grab onto more resources I realize the Thalans have grabbed them- a Military and a Research. However, I found another Influence already in my..er.. sphere of influence. As I begin churning out a steady stream of Constructors and setting up Starbases, I realize the Thalans have dropped two Influence starbases in my territory- neither within reach of their own worlds. So, they want to play... A v

Alright, this seemed slightly popular before and I figure it'll help me figure out what's up. Game Setup Everything's set to Abundant that can be, stars are Scattered, and research is Very Fast. Difficulty is set to Normal. I think the Thalans still have the +10% Planet Quality ability that I picked up while playing them; not sure as to government but I'd bet the Thalans are using Technologists and the Arceans are Populist. I picked up

I've seen this happen before, but it always seems to be a lead-up to an influence war. They put in some Influence bases, with no upgrades. So I ignore them. Then they start down the tech tree and those bases get upgraded, usually til they negate or overcome my own influence.

I've found a great way to solve this little dilemma- be nice. No, seriously. One of the few things I've done that's actually worked, was being nice to someone I intended to fight. Specifically I gave them Missile techs and Shield techs. Enough to commit them to that line of development. It made my life easy- I quit Shields and went to Point Defense, while the AI kept pursuing Shields and Missiles. And when I did run across Beam-using races,

Properly used, all ships own. Thinking it over more, I'd say the further you get in the game, the less useful defense gets for smaller ships. For example, early game. You manage to fit 1 of each of the +1 defenses on a fighter, and add in a couple Laser Vs. So you're at 2 Damage, 3 Defense, 9 HP. Your opponent maanges to fit 5 Laser Vs. 5 Damage, 0 Defense, 9 HP. Odds are pretty good that the ship with Defense will win

For sheer speed of mobilizing an army, small and tiny ships are great. Thus, I'd say if you find yourself in an unexpected war, swarms of fighters will be your best friend. However, if you're the aggressor, you'll find the capital ships to be a powerful front line. For reinforcements, though, I'd crank out both. Let your smaller planets work on developing fighter fleets while the capital ships get built at your big yards. Also keep in mind

The best thing I've seen so far is to mix speed and weaponry. I've also noticed that it's usually a lot easier to shrink a given technology than to make a new one. I've often cut off at Plasma III rather than pick up Phasors, instead investing in miniaturization- the short term benefits are greater because fitting a fourth Plasma III is going to do more for my damage output than being able to fit two Phasors. Of course, you can't totally ignore new wea

Final report. The Drengin weren't doing much- but I didn't really care. I'd decided that I'd get involved. It was time to go to war. I began developing the planetary invasion line while I designed and built new ships. Heavy fighters, a simple yet powerful frame that provided ample space for my needs- the Butterfly. With my Mayflies guarding the planets, I set up the Butterflies (Beam 6, Speed 4) into 4-ship squadrons. Then, when there were t

The game continues. It looks like the Terrans were aware of their planetary issues- they've been moving ships in to defend. No defense at all, and nothing but beam weapons. I contemplated what to do while I upgraded my Influence bases some more. I decided that if I couldn't decide whether to attack the Terrans, I'd just employ someone who'd be happy to do it- so I bribed the Drengin and they went to war. I have yet to see any actual fightin
