One thing that really determines how much you see custom maps and mods is how easy players can automatically get the files. I look at games like Warcraft 3 and Starcraft where custom maps are automatically downloaded on joining the server and see that they have a plethora of custom maps and people playing them. Most other games don't have this feature and even if the maps are readily available in some official archive it still means that no one pl
I like the idea of having a more "cluttered" map. A pre-industrial world should have defensible hills and river fords, and at least sketch that the rural areas are important. An empty void between cities is just "Galciv with swords", I want it to have depth and reality as itself.
I agree. Terrain is of huge important to land warfare, and I want that to be shown. It's in

I'd love it if WindowFX, Windowblinds, or some other app let me right-click or something on a window and set its resolution manually. I know I can select the lower-right corner and drag, but sometimes I want something precise (such as displaying an old 640x480 resolution game in 1280x960). Just an idea...

RavenX - Take a look at the Unit Types XML file. %PROGRAMFILES%\Stardock Games\Elemental\data\%locale%\CoreUnitGroupingType.xml. It currently goes up to 1000. There may be some engine limitation, but if so it's probably not an even thousand. Now that I think of it, it has a tag. If the engine can accept a tab, or accept a faction name in the tag, it would at least be moddable to have unit types by faction. I g

Re: scrolling: that's a great idea. Post it as a suggestion. Re: WinXP booting: the closest you could do would be to manipulate the starting order of startup apps. I can't recall how to do it at the moment, but Google can probably find something. It won't be perfect though. In general, Windows likes displaying its desktop long before it's actually useable by anything.

It's mostly useful if you end up with lots of icons on your desktop. You can use it as a poor man's replacement, I guess, though you'd need to reduce to desktop to get at the icons. I generally don't use my desktop to launch apps, but I use it as a holding tank for work in progress.

I don't like the idea of the Sovereign always escaping, but I do like the idea of the Sovereign often escaping, especially if s/he's not in the thick of battle. Likewise for heroes who are similarly, ah, "conservative" during battles. The goal, I think, is to avoid turning sovereigns into permanent bull's eyes to the detriment of other strategies. If players have a variety of ways to conceal them, protect them from assassination, protect them in battles, that shou

I really don't want cities (or anything else, for that matter) generating "free" resources. It does a couple things: 1. It allows large numbers of cities to make up for not controlling resources. Thus, in time, bigger factions will always have a resource advantage over small ones. 2. It makes it far less likely that factions will go to war over key resources. If everyone can have access to "Faery-wrough Adamantium", if only in small quantities, what's the pus

FWIW, I think you should... ...need resources to build things ...get a bonus to build rate and a reduced gold cost if you have multiple resources ...have multiple ways of getting resources ("harvesting", trade, spoils of war, raiding caravans) ...have the ability to store resources For #4 to work, though, it has to be automated. Few people want a logistical micromanagement game. If resources are stored and move around on

Everyone - How about this for an option: Once a Sovereign has an heir of his/her body, they can designate one (and only one) as their spiritual successor, or some such. If the Sovereign dies, the player takes over the Sovereign's heir. This could lead to interesting, and fun situations, such as: 1. Sovereign designates Grandson X to be The Heir 2. Grandson X is allowed to become a Vassal 3. Grandson X signs a treaty of alliance with another Faction

If you want/need the most computing power possible, go with Clevo (Sager in the U.S.). XoticPC.com and PowerNotebooks.com are both reputable resellers. The high-end Sager models are very expensive, but less expensive per performance measure. You're paying for the hardware: not the brand name.

I'm actually happy with this direction. I prefer paying for capability (WindowBlinds) over content (MyColors). Plus, MyColors and WB were and either/or proposition: I couldn't use a MyColors theme and then tweak it. Sad to see ObjectBar going away, but ObjectDock performs most of the same functions, and graphically things are moving to widgets, gadgets, and virtual windows (Fences).

Fences is great on the desktop: I would love it if it were avaialble in my Explorer panes, perhaps as a View Type (i.e. Tile, Large Icon, Small Icon, List, Detail, etc.). Fences could be organized on a per-folder basis, but you could have "templates" set up for certain folder types, sets of folders, etc. Alternatively, if you could display the contents of a folder as a Fence, that'd be great as well. E.g. Folder A has Folders A1, B1, and B2 in it. If Folder A is se

I think it'd be neat if Unit Sizes varied by Faction. Certainly some factions could be similar or, more likely, identical. But I think the concept would be nice. Additionally, it'd be interesting if Unit Sizes had a range of values, rather than a single value. This would allow two things: Collections of units merged together could receive non-production-related bonuses. The XML file already has the structures in place to allow this, but having a

One of the XML files details out the various "unit sizes". It goes something like single, troop, platoon, company, battalion, legion if I recall correctly. Since it's just an XML file, it should even be moddable if you don't like the out-of-the-box orgs.

TatertotEatalot - I'm not saying that "realistically" the diagonal squares shouldn't be safer; I'm saying that from a gameplay standpoint: what does that add, other than complexity? I tend to be all for making games realistic (I prefer sims to games, I guess), but at the end f the day, complexity for its own sake tends to do poorly. It basically comes down to: squares, hexes, or real coordinates. Hexes make it look "hard", real coordinates tend to make it "hard" (

Or make it cost 2.8. Display Movement Points as whole integers (i.e. trim fractions), but calculate real movement. If everything takes at least 1 to move along, then any remainder at the end are useless. The problem is that doing something like this makes diagonal tiles "safer" than horizontal/vertical tiles. While it adds to technical realism slightly, I'm not sure the gameplay impact is worth it. It's far easier to think of distance not as "the space between

This is a great idea. I agree that such a system needs both a) bonus to first to research and b) reduced cost to research for everyone else to be effective. It incents a technology race, but keeps the race artificially close. A Player can make a reasonable decision to lag everyone else on purpose, at the cost of never having the "best" of something. Very cool.

A "sleeping" Sovereign might be interesting. Perhaps it could be used to prepare for certain spells that are otherwise uncastable (i.e. allows build-up of mana or something), but player becomes AI-run at that point, minus any orders already given. Such a feature might best remain in single-player mode, but it could be interesting.
