Ditchdigger106 (reply #89) :
the vast majority of people who play MP [and SP] probably don't surf the forums at all. The fact is, casual MPers [and SPers] are people who really don't care about your super efficient build order [...] I mean, seriously, face it. Most people who play games play them to have fun and blow off some steam. Scouring the forums researching optimal build strategies is not a line of behavior conducive to casual fun.
R

your OP is a refreshing touch ... in a forum where perpetually restless & power-hungry sharks are pa/troll/ing & pa/tron/izing ... but why does the CEO of Stardock call himself « Frogboy » ?!? i know all about « frogs » : im a French Canadian from Québec ... oh, yea ... i almost forgot : Merci beaucoup, Prince charmant ... ;p P.S. The Ironclad devs live in anglo Western Canada : here, in the francophone East, they are perceiv

have u tried this : 1. close a software firewall ? 2. close all antivirus & antispyware programs ? 3. close all non-essential, background, user-associated programs* ? 4. run the game in a window (set in the visual options) ? * in win XP, i only keep the vital explorer.exe running before launching Sins
@ Eilarais My bad sorry. Put Ironclad in the main post
You perhaps meant, rather, @ Sorceresss : Eilarais was not the one who informed you of Ironclad's role. Now, I can't edit my reply #1, so it seems a little odd after you edited your OP. Not a big deal.

I understand your preference : it is close to mine. I got my gaming education with the fantasy TBS series Heroes of Might & Magic, Age of Wonders, Disciples. Like you, I am wary of fast-paced, RTS click-fests. Despite that, I recommend that you get SINS, because it has a lot of pre-game customization options which allow you to tailor the game according to your tastes. For example, in the wake of the very recent 1.03 update, there are more
Thanks for a great game Stardock.
... and Ironclad ... FYI, Stardock officers are not your « dev's » of the SINS game : IRONCLAD designers & programmers are ! Stardock is the (very, very involved) American « producer » of the game : the « development » is done by Canadian Ironclad. For example, Stardock's « Frogboy » is the genius behind the A.I. programming of Galactic Civilizations (1 & 2) ... but in what concerns S
the 'everyone hate the competitive players' crowd
Well ... if there is such a crowd, I'm not part of it. I don't « hate » high-level, competitive players. On the contrary, I admire them, reading all their posts to study their concepts & models, in the abstract, realising that I will never have the time & willpower to try to apply their ideas in online, competitive multiplay. My crucial point has only been this : since that competitive elite possibly represents

im :) for you : that the 1.03 update fixed your problem ... i did the tutorials, and then, i learned how to play (more or less...) by starting a game with only one star, enemy comps on easy (locked teams!) + one allied comp on normal (same team in game set-up) ... i hate tutorials : i prefer to jump in a skirmish ASAP ...

Sunday 1:30 PM (Eastern) : I just tried to enter the SINS forum by the usual path, and the process failed : it hung for 10 minutes before I terminated the attempt. But it was very easy to enter by the forums.stardock.com path. FYI : to report that the situation i have been experiencing since Friday still endures.

From (Stardock CEO) Frogboy's reply #15 : Some people have explicitly said that the hard core multiplayer players are the heart of the community and must be made top priority. And that's something I can't accept. Our goal has to remain to make sure as many people as possible enjoy the game.
Sorcereress, it's not 'elite multiplayer issues'.
I was merely quoting Frogboy himself, when he mentioned, in his reply #5, « elite level multiplayer issues ». My tiny contribution was simply to offer, as support, that I agreed with his statement on the relative lack of importance of those type of elitist issues.
Sadly, properly programming an AI is quite beyond most developers. Short of giving the AI significant advantages in order to overcome its stupidity, not much else can be done.
Stardock's Galactic Civilization 2 A.I. is possibly the very best programming achievement in TBS games. Stardock is the very involved producer of SINS, it is not the developer : Ironclad is ... so, the latter remains solely responsible for the coding of the SINS A.I.

From reply #5, very recently posted by Frogboy : I don't agree that elite level multiplayer issues are going to take precedence over, for instance, improving the computer AI or getting AI players to replace dropped players or making it easier to join multiplayer games. I 100% agree with that position ... without repeating the arguments I have recently posted on other threads in favour of that type of non-elitist, more inclusive position. "Eli

great thread idea ... some really have excessive & extreme titles which distract from the real issues ... (i'm alluding to this thread's former title, before it was very recently changed, for the better, by Frogboy)

Saturday 06:30 PM (Eastern Canada/USA) > 1. Yesterday, it was very difficult to get into the main SINS forum. 2. This morning, it took me 2½ hours to get in at all. 3. Then, I lost it again, but I had no problem getting in by switching to the Stardock-forums version. 4. After a break, I could not get back into the Stardock entry-point... 5. and now, it was easy to get in the darker SINS version (but not the Stardock-forums version).

@ bonerfest > Thanks for your correction. I am not visually impaired : I had focused on the official 1.03 changelog, not paying any attention to the homepage. My hypothesis, then, is that a marketing-oriented author, on the homepage, got carried away. As far as I'm concerned, the official changelog is the most correct & precise, reliable technical info ... and I do not see any « vastly improved » A.I. there. Marketing ...

From reply #65, posted by "Frogboy" : Stardock nor Ironclad are going to make changes to the game that are to the detriment of the single player game experience [...] which is where most people play the game most of the time. i dont know where the OP got the idea that 1.03 would provide (to quote the OP) a « vastly improved AI » ! ... let me quote the official changelog for 1.03, in what concerns the A.I. changes : -AI now knows how to surrender (based on time elapsed, relative economy, relative fleet value, resource reserves, and allied strength). Also, an AI player will not surrender if he has a human ally. -AI is now smarter about retreating and is willing to commit local su
