Like tetleytea, I have played with many combinations and I don't think that any bonus is really indispensible. I think you should change your play style to maximize the bonuses you take. If you want to be a military empire, +30% influence doesn't help as much as a speed bonus perhaps, but it can help a lot if you are not looking to invade. That being said, the 1 point for a +10% morale I almost always take no matter what other combination of abilities I choose, custom or stock race.

A research and economic treaty. Whats that! A new feature of Dark Avatar. You can choose to give a 10% boost of research or economic production to one other empire. You don't lose any of your own production, but their bonus is based on your spending. If you have Dark Avatar, they are in the diplomacy screen with the other treaty options.

Yeah, I agree, power rankings for me are typically feast or famine. I spend the early game as the least powerful civ, and then when I'm ready to expand and start swallowing the universe I quickly jump into the top spot. The game would do well to take a more comprehensive view of an empire's power. It would help the AI better judge which empire's it could really take down. It would help the AI know when it was winning or losing a war. And it would help new players see how they REALLY

You can do it both ways, start with one and flip to the other and vice versa. The reasons to leave all labs is if you can't handle the higher money it takes, or after you finish the tech tree. In that game, I was forced to switch because I ran out of money. That is why I commented that I was playing clumsily in the report. 100% factories I understand, but--100% labs? It actually can work better than all factories, depending on your map settings. I wrote an AAR where I illustrate using this method, and in the notes following I went through the math of all labs and all factories vs. using a mix.
