Treaties should be bilateral only, the above screenshot is why. But, but, I like my "tributes". The thing is, it wouldn't be an exploitable advantage if the AI just tried to do it as well. I think the current "free" treaty system can work, where some empires get six sent there way, others get none. But for it to work, the AI has to actually want them.

Or just giving good an immediate +% to defense in addition to the buildings and tech. That would help a lot. Give them influence bonuses. Give them universal diplomacy bonuses. Give them immediate hp bonuses. This is not an exhastive list, and I'm not trying to start a brainstorming session. The point is there are lots and lots of things which could be done that would still give each ethical alignment its "flavor" while making good more competitive. Or competitive at all. Currently, play

The AI also seems to value tech in a vacume. If everyone is using warp drives, New Propulsion Techniques really isn't worth much. I've had problems trading Extreme Colonization for Xeno Biology. What? What is the AI thinking? Why is it valuing those old techs so highly? The value of any tech in this game is relative to the top tech reached in that tree at the current time in the current game. Having the top tech of any tree, except maybe sensorsIV and starbase fortification tech

Actually, I have more to say about trading in general on the top difficulty levels. The AIs approach seems to be to just value everything more highly, and this leads to it missing opportunities. For instance, lets go back to that research treaty from a civ that is researching 200bc/turn. Say on suicidal the AI just values everything it has twice as much. Now, it wants 2600 for its research treaty. That is fine, it makes the game harder on me. BUT it will only pay 750bc for my treat

Also, not sure if this has to do with the real AI or the values table that you deal with, but the AI does not try hard enough to get multiple treaties. Every AI should want every treaty from all the other civs, those are free bonuses to your empire. The AI is lethargic at picking them up, and only ever seems to pick up two. Part of this appears to be how they value the treaties. IMO, they are valued too low... I should be able to sell mine for more, and it should cost me more to get

Oh, I agree they both have their place. That is what I was trying to lay out in my Reply#7. But in DA did Neutral get better than it was in DL? IMO that is a resounding no.

I agree with the previous posters, the AI is very poor at deciding the value of peace and war, when it should keep fighting and when it should want to stop. The Terran Alliance is especially bad about peace treaties, wanting too much for peace when it is losing, often leading to it's doom. Also, I often have problems with apples to apples trading. No matter my diplomacy, the AI should want to trade me Phasor II if I offer it Phasor VII in exchange. I know this means its trading weapo

I think that in DA, neutral got even better. I disagree. In DA, neutral now actually needs to spend the research points to get the techs soil enhancement >> terraforming to use the ability. In DL it was automatic. If you need to get to terraforming ANYWAY, the ability can be duplicated by just building the orbital terraformer. IMO this advantage has been reduced to simply saving you the cost of an orbital terraformer. That is still several thousand

I as Humans bought in a suicidal game a class 11 planet for Planetary Improvements and Advanced Trade. In fact at turn 30 a half of my ~10 planets are bought. Iztok - I'm jealous. I don't ever play with humans, but for me buying planets is tricky, and not something I can depend on yet. Are there any pointers you can pass on that I might be overlooking? Thanks. <img sr

How do I prevent total economic collapse? Pray to the money gods. As for trade, it depends on a lot whether it is worthwhile. It depends on map size. It depends on game length. It depends (somewhat) on the population sizes on planets. In a faster game, trade routes will not even earn you back the resources you spend to build the freighter. In a longer game, if you can protect your routes than they can pay off in the long run. I do trade

You can do a lot with diplomacy. In the latest patch they really tightened up tech trading on the Masochistic, Obscene and Suicidal difficulty levels. Before that, there are still a lot of options. If it seems too easy, try upping your difficulty.

Well, it could design new ships for itself while you play. I think the reason you get slowdown is because they try and keep a decent framerate, which IS affected by all those polygons on lower end machines. But it is turnbased. You would think with all animations off you could tell it you didn't care about the framerate and just always play at full speed. Just turn it into a 2d game (which it kinda is anyway). Don't get me wrong, the 3Dness is super pretty. Sometimes you wa

I see the current tech trading setup as being a significant and unfair advantage for the AI I think it is a little more gray than this, but in terms of just tech I'm with you 100%. They trade for way more tech than a player is ever able to. If you care about colonization techs, I see where this would put you at a disadvantage. I'm with tetleytea about the solution. I have two questions concerning the giving-planet-flipping-back: 1) Doesn't it flip of the AI when you do that (alarming influence and such)? 2) Why do you remove the population before giving away the planet? Is it easier to flip an almost uninhabited planet or just to not give the AI additional tax payers? 1) yes, but sometimes I want that. 2) yes, the lower the population, the easier the flip With re

OK, all scores are updated. It's a dead heat, less than 4,000 pts seperate the two sides. Its currently the Krynn in the lead with 238,585. The Korath are real close at 235,450. CornhuskerMac and Berzelius - I added both of your scores to the total. While I do prefer screenshots, if you have a problem with screenshots as long as you post your game to the metaverse and let me know where to find it I can add it. For anyone else having problems with screenshots, please follow Cornhusk

I'm curious as to why you got all the research treaties from the AIs but didn't get any of the economic ones. The AI won't trade the economic treaties before about the start of year three. Doesn't matter what you offer, they say "its too soon for us to get involved in treaties so soon". Research treaties can be leveraged right away. Similarly, if you try to sell your economic treaty in the first few years, you might get less than 20bc for it. You can

Some good points here, although some advice I'm less sure will be helpful. Iztok and Oldstatesman gave really solid advice. Given the current state of the game engine, I would have to advise you to NOT research two weapon trees if you are playing DA. This is a waste of resources. All weapons of the same kind add together to give you a higher attack value. There is not yet a reason to try and mix weapon values. This might change, but currently - you want every ship to have all the s

What were you offering the AI for these treaties? Whatever it took, but I had an advantage you might not. The AI values a treaty based on its own output. This is exploitable in two ways. First, if the AI hits an econ crash and their research production falls to nothing, you can get the research treaty very fast. Second, I was playing on a smaller map and I started trading early. I got all of those treaties in the first 10-16 turns. That's the only

You mentioned buying a planet from the Terrans, a talent you are still learning. Would you mind spilling the beans on this. Not at all, but I'm very much a novice. You should ask someone who is good at it to tell you more. Basically, from what I can tell, the price of a planet as determined by the AI is a combination of PQ of planet, population CURRENTLY on the planet, and distance of planet from the home system (whichever system has the little crown s

does this mean planets full of factories set to research, produce more overall (empire wide) total production than say having specialized planets Actually, let me put some numbers behind this to see what I'm talking about, and we will deal with a very simple example: two tiles. Scenario 1: 1 industrial sector, 1 discovery sphere Max production here is 12 factory and 18 research. If you run at 1%/49%/50% you get: 6 hammers/shields

BTW I wonder how you managed to collect all that money from AIs. Im my games they rarely have more than a few hundred BCs in a treasury at any given time. Lots of minors? Three minors. A few things. - Trading very early often the AI still has lots of its starting cash sitting around, and they seem to start with 10k each on suicidal. I went for communications and diplo tech very quickly. - I made sure to trade all the economy tech I had as soo

In the game movement points are extra attacks. ??? What?? Do we play the same game? I have never seen this functionality, and I have played more than a few games in DA.

For what its worth, since posting this I've already played a game with the Iconians. I lost at the beginning of year 4. I ran out of money and just bled out until someone finally got around to conquering me. I took out the Torians, but never managed an income. I played with tech trading off, got no anomalies, and just had no way to make money. I took about 6 screenshots, but the game doesn't feel worth a full AAR. BTW, Iconians are absolutely the WORST race. Only 7 ability points?
