Thanks much for that breakdown, Raven :) Sometimes little touches are more than enough to make a game feel fresh. I especially like being able to pick traits for your generals, and personal duels. It does sound like they iterated quite a bit on some of the core features, I can't say I really expected anything too drastic. I just like to see improvements here and there and not just a re-skin/re-balance :)

Fleets are good for people who don't like to micromanage as much, and there are a fair number of those. In that regard they function pretty well, they keep ships together and they keep ship control simpler. Give an attack order to a fleet and the combat ships will go attack, but the support ships will stay support, etc.

This was debated and thought about during the design. But I don't think you guys realize how boring and predictable it would be. Every planet close to the star would have to be barren/volcanic. Every planet in the habitable zone would have to be Terran. Every planet farther out would be barren or gas giant. Can you play on essentially the same map for a year? It may be realistic, but it's not "fun". It's boring, it's unbalanced, and it's utterly predictable. This is one good case where fun tr
I gotta disagree with you on this one, Annatar. To me the prevalence of fire-arms in Empire makes it feel completely different than the rest of the series, including Shogun 2. True there is the "occasional" matchlock unit in Shogun 2 but they're no where near as common as in Empire. I've fought against a few in the demo but they're pretty restricted in availability. Even in the full game the only way to recruit matchlock units will be to convert your religion to one of the Eur
The OP was carefully researched, and the Social Security number info as well: “Part of the security problem lies with the method used to assign SSNs. The researchers note that only four digits of the nine digit SSN are random. The first three digits are called the Area Number (AN) and the next two are the Group Number (GN). ANs are allocated to specific states and GNs to specific birth years. Given the date of birth and place of birth, researchers need only
I do want to comment on the 'old guard' though. The people doing that weren't the 'old guard'. The real old members were people from back in 2009 posting in giant idea threads about things like economic systems. The ones you're talking about were the fanboys, and they appeared closer to release.
This man speaketh true.

Gaming tried to integrate speech recognition as well somewhat recently. The game was Tom Clancy's EndWar. It was a strategy game similar to Ground Control or World in Conflict, and you were able to give verbal commands to your units. For example, you could assign units to a group, and then give commands to the group, such as "Group 1, secure Alpha" or "Group 1, attack 2" (enemy units showed up with hovering numbers over them). The speech recognition part of the game was solid and responsive.

Pretty much what Tridus said. You can complain about Steam as much as you like, but no other platform offers so many features in a free-to-use package. It's pretty much a no brainer for publishers to use it, especially since most of the DD services are hosting Steamworks games. The gain far outweighs the comparatively few people who refuse to use Steam on principle.

Yes, and this is really the biggest problem with Diplomacy. Psychoak hit it exactly.. the AI doesn't do anything special for diplomacy with other AIs. Any AI doesn't prioritize missions - you can give it a mission and it'll only complete it if it happens as a side effect of whatever it was doing normally. Same with everything else. The Diplomacy system works fine for Human <> AI interaction, but not so well for AI <> AI.

What they should do is have more higher tier light tanks so the poor Leopards don't get stuck as scouts in tier 8 matches and die whenever someone looks at them and sneezes in their general direction :)

The series is designed to be played in sequence. Your choices from ME1 will reflect in ME2 when you import your character,. If you skip ME1, it will assume you made certain choices, and you'll miss a lot of interesting stuff. So I recommend starting from the beginning :)
Ask an Xbox developer how many free updates they're allowed to put up. Or maybe a PS3 developer. You definitely don't want there to be only one choice in a given market. You always want an alternative to keep the other guy honest.
If you're putting out a game on the 360 or PS3 you are forced to agree to MS or Sony terms of doing so. This is because the 360 and PS3 are completely closed platforms, *not* Digital Download providers. Nothing gets put on tho

Players will be reset. Teams are balanced by tanks. Each tank has a certain point weight and teams are made so the total points match up between the teams, out of all the tanks that are queued. Artillery uses its own mechanism, but generally the teams are made with even numbers of artillery +/- 1. This doesn't take into account individual skill levels, but it balances out the teams so that you don't have a team of all light tanks that can't kill anything, or a team of all heavy tanks that can

I was referring to SC2 tourneys ;) Also, players are only sponsored in Teams. There are lots and lots of tournaments where anyone can play. Also, MM spam vs Protoss? Really? They can get a sentry to block their ramp and you'll never get up there with your MM ball. Or if you do they'll split you off with the FF. Nearly foolproof? It's a good opening sure, but it doesn't win a game unless your opponent has been doing something way out there. As soon as a Colossus or High Templar i

So I've seen World of Tanks mentioned in another thread recently and I decided to do sort of an intro thread for the game because it's not very heavily marketed but is nevertheless pretty fun, if you're into that kind of gameplay. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THn_FZAxvuQ&hd=1 So, what is it? World of Tanks is probably best described

I guess it is subjective. By "got better" I meant that you were able to get the same content without paying money, and they keep making more of it. You rarely had to specifically grind Deeds, except the kill x amount ones. All the rest you always picked up naturally by using your skills, doing quests.. the only other one you had to try for was the exploration. Everything else just happened. Personally I think it's an awesome system to net you store credits.

Most non-Korean MMOs do not have grind until you get to the level cap. WoW, LoTRO, etc all have a gigantic amount of quests and you don't even do all of them because you just outlevel them due to the sheer number. So I guess what's your definition of accomplishment? If you want to gain 5 levels in 4 hours every time you play, no MMO is going to accommodate that past the newbie levels. If your accomplishment is getting stuff done, then pretty much every Western MMO gives you that.
