Say, where did the 20 million copies bit come from? According to wiki, if you exclude bundles with the consoles, the list of games to break 20 million across all platforms consists of the original Poke'mon and The Sims, that's it. The bundled ones only add four more. I'd aim for 1-2 million for expected sales from a high budget PC game. [link="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games"]This[/link] is really quite informative if you have a historical knowledge of t
Dear God, take an economics class... The initial cost of developing an object is irrelevant to the price needed to make a reasonable profit. It's the cost of replicating that throws a wrench in the idea that games should have adjusted with the rate of inflation and development costs. Replication costs have gone through the floor. It's almost nothing to stamp CD's, the cost of printing a manual now compared to 20 years ago is a very nice fortune saved. Development costs are g
Monster. Yes, I'm calling you a monster. Not because of the adults; because of the children. The adults may have screwed up and worked their own way into the situation, the children didn't.
And the Children are there because? Think, don't just feel. Feeling bad for them isn't helpful. There are several million people starving in Haiti, they have been starving for over 40 years. Which generation of children would you like me to think about? Ignoring t
Gormoth, I don't believe anyone has said it's illegal for EA to shoot themselves in the foot with this idiotic system. It's just stupid. It's an unmitigated fact that drm hasn't done a damn thing to stop piracy. It never has, and it never will. You cannot write something that can't be neutralized. Just making it hard is costing the industry a fortune, and has only suceeded in killing entire companies. They made it hard in Titan's Quest by disguising security checks as bugs. It wor
Stargate SG-1 is a Sci-Fi original. The first five years were produced by Showtime, no broadcast involved. UPN was showing reruns for a while, but when Showtime dropped it, Sci-Fi bought the rights for it and started extending the series. The original 5 seasons are definitely unfair to call Sci-Fi originals, but the rest of it, they own from the bottom up. Jake 2.0 I don't get though, it's a viacom production, originally aired on UPN(odd how many things aired on UPN...), never even f
Part of that post was unfair. While Clinton is a fucking idiot, it's really not fair to blame him for Aristide. The Haitians did elect him to start with, he just had a bit of trouble with a military coup before we sent him back...
Main beef with the death penalty seems to be an error rate. Why are we allowed to drive cars? Taking baths kills innocent people too, we should ban the filling of tubs. I fail to see how a cause of death so low can be such a sticking point. There are things that are reasonable standards though. Circumstantial evidence for instance should never make a death penalty case, it probably shouldn't be allowed to make any case period. I'd go so far as to say unsupported eye witness
I don't know what reviews you've been reading, but the performance of the gt over the gts is nowhere near a 170% increase. Did you perhaps mean 20% and 70%? Alas, Naoza is correct though, the 320 gts is one of the weaker 8800's. Of course, if you ignore price, you shouldn't have bought an 8800 of any kind, as a 9800 is more powerful. As long as you didn't spend the $250 you would have for a gt, he's just being a twit as far as the card goes. The ddr3 he's got you on though. Must ha

Communist! Although to go with the theme I should probably have gone with Nazi instead. Nazi communist? The Archbishop should have spent a little less time asking questions and a little more time finding answers. Poor people generally have themselves to blame, and giving them food rarely helps do anything but keep them hungry. The idea that education will solve all the worlds ills holds up only in a fairy tale. If the liberal philosophy is correct and people really do sta
The Sims. Lots of expansion packs, there has been significant flak over how gay EA is for milking the franchise in such a manner. To some, and I haven't played any of them and have no idea what my own opinions would be, that method of introducing new content is an affront to their intelligence and must be squashed at all costs. They go around pissing and moaning when it's even suggested, it is assumed that the game is handicapped in advance to leave room for the updates, a purposeful
To be more specific. The email address you bought the game with is the email address they are assuming you used when you bought it direct from them, you didn't buy it direct from them. You'll need to create an account, something you would have done beforehand had you bought direct.
Gormoth, you're reasonable, something that can't be said for some of your opposition, but you're not logical. A three activation limit, assuming it works flawlessly, is the bare minimum for anyone who uses three computers. Lets say you have your almighty desktop, your significantly less powerful laptop that you use when the desktop is inconvenient, and your work computer that your nice boss lets you dick around on during your lunch break. An entirely legitimate setup, all three activa
Common sense would be to strip all copy protection. However, it's significantly less (Edit)disagreeable. I will inevitably get a crack for the game if I run into an issue with the security. When the three activations are up, bypass them. Screw the phone call. The phone home component is the idealogical sticking point that will not be compromised on. With that in it, I refuse to support the company. With that out, it's simply a nuisance and a waste of their time and money, instead
I was going to be an asshole and make Hitler jokes for SpacePony, but shit... Damicatz, please don't breed.
Because the unit AI currently does something nonsensical, we should keep focus firing in and useful. Focus firing is the downfall of real time strategy, period. You cannot replicate real tactical defense when it works. A fortified position simply doesn't exist. In real life, when people are shooting at each other, they shoot back at the people shooting at them, ignoring someone to focus your fire on one guy would get you massacred. Realism of course isn't a justification for
Maybe Wright can give you a P.O. box to send him a check. Then you can pay him directly and steal it. :) Paranoia aside(I run without a firewall in the DMZ and don't use an anti-virus) there are plenty of reasons to not be connected to the internet. Where I'm at, it's a hundred bucks a month for a seriously shitty satellite connection. When the stars are aligned, I've killed the right people and it's three in the morning, my connection is 1200/180. With a minimum possible la

Realism and space games do not mix, go play orbiter! Why to discourage micromanagement. Explain the intelligence required in force firing on single targets to destroy them faster. Where are the tactics in such? Micro whores will defend it to their dying breath, but there is nothing strategic in force firing. Mitigation doesn't really do much, it's a broken concept. The concept I like, but reality is 1500 shields really means 4500 shields because the ship is going to be at 6
Who said anything about other games sucking? I was pointing out that the industry hasn't figured out what makes a game sell well. Whether they are good or not is entirely irrelevant. I consider the other ones listed to be a blight on humanity, they still have low system requirements, excellent stability, and sold very well.
He said he bought 1500 games and only a couple dozen were actually worth buying. So now he pirates them to see before buying because he can't afford to spend fifty thousand bucks for a couple dozen games. Makes perfect sense to me.
Okay, all this "most pirates wouldn't buy the game anyway" and "piracy does/doesn't cost companies sales" talk is stupid. This stuff is impossible to measure. People here like to point at Stardock and say "this is proof that piracy doesn't hurt sales!" but for all you know, Stardock's games are popular despite not having copy-protection, not because of it. We simply can't say either way.The bottom line for me is if I'm selling games, I would definitely want to err on the side of cautio
