What would I be failing on a computer that connects DIRECTLY to the internet without a router?
NAT-filtering test, which can be as a result of one's ISP, or the Microsoft Security patch for NAT-traversal for Windows XP. :D thanks, the Monk
its a bug in the reporting software. It sometimes tell you the port is closed even if its open, make sure its open and just wait for a few minutes and see if people join (make sure there are people around and that your game name isn't stupid, and that its a reasonably sized map)... I always get the same error (even when connecting direct to the internet, bypassing the router completely) and I have been hosting games fine despite it.
It's not a "bug" in the "

You have to change the "TeamIndex" values for players/planets.... and this should really be in the "Modding" forum section.

The host from last night needs to load the "saved game" and then everyone connects back to the same host. Done.
Got it! YES! It's working now! I had the DMZ of my DSL modem set incorrectly. I had it pointing to my computer's static IP instead of to my wireless router's IP. Again, thanks for the guide Monk. My only critique is that it assumes the user has some sort of intelligence, and makes him think about what he's doing and figure stuff out on his own a bit. I could handle that, though it took me some fiddling. Some people will just throw up their hands in frustration - they jus

So, you're loading the game, clicking "multiplayer", then "create/host" game and immediately following that click you're getting booted back to the multiplayer menu with the message "disconnected from game server"? I'd say, something on your system is blocking the game from "creating" the host. Disable all security software on the host. (kill the processes in the taskmanage if necessary). You can leave the Windows Firewall on as long as you've placed the proper excepti

When you click "create" on the host, you immediately get the message on the same machine "you have been disconnected from the game server"?? Are you trying to do this through ICO?

That means one of two things. 1. Either you're not typing in the correct IP (192.168.xxx.xxx) in the "address" field on the second computer. or 2. Something on the host computer (software-related) is blocking the LAN connection attempt. I'm assuming you're trying to host from one machine in your home, and connect to it from another machine in your home which is connected to the same LAN? the Monk

I agree, the smaller the company the more intimate the relationship with their clients and the better the products. Maybe there's still room for me though? You know, in the "geek-room" (server closet hehe :p ) I'll keep to myself, you'll just hear me mumbling IP addresses, NAT-rules and such to myself........ :HOT:

If you do everything I've described in my guide (and are not at a university/dorm etc.) exactly the way I've described in my guide you will no longer have any issues hosting. Period. :) I can't spe

My guess is, power-supply gone bad or not supplying something with the correct voltage consistently. Replace it and play more SINS. :D

@ mnosam *sigh* to say it again... This game has wonderfully solid network transport, there is nothing broken about it. I (as well as others here) have provided everything those who are not technically inclined need in order to "help themselves". No one has the right to refuse to help themselves (especially when ample help and support are provided) and then complain. Period. the Monk P.S. SINS is P2P, that won't chan

Ummm....you do know that "games which are in progress are not shown in the list"? (I put that in quotes because it's been said many times on these forums by the devs, myself and others) The vast majority of users "shown" in a lobby aren't talking because they're in a game (which of course is not shown in the list because its "in progress") :) the Monk My point of view: (which is not likely to change :HOT: ) I sincerely doubt that the peo

So you're suggesting that 10 employee's of IC or SD, load SINS at regular intervals during the day and "host" a game in which they don't participate in (because they need to work) and therefore make the teams un-balanced to add to the already numerous games in progress? Ridiculous There's no reason to complain about not enough "available games" when I've written a guide with everything you need to know/do in order to host yourself. If people don't want to help themselves.
Thanks alot monk, great guide on hosting btw. And about the 6000 port, should i change it to another port as well? the user.setting file have it's settings under "gameboradcastport 6000". or do i have to keep it at 6000 and change it everytime on router setting to the hostin computers ip everytime i host? P.S. after setting up the stuff accourdin the your guide, i don't even get the ICO hosting message anymore .. yay ^_^
Glad to hear you found the guide helpful! :)<b
You say that the game would have to be completely rewritten for Ironclad to keep a compliment of accessible, hosted games available? I could buy 10 copies of the game myself, and host 10 games of Sins without rewriting a thing. That would triple the activity of Ironclad Online alone. Hosting is the weak link in the chain of this game, why can't Ironclad set up some dedicated peers that host the games? If I can do it, so can they, and the cost wouldn't be prohibitive. It seems to me that th

@ m8chor Of course, you cannot do that (forward all data on the SAME port to DIFFERENT IP's). ;) What you need to do, is change the game hosting port (ie. 6112) for one of the two computers you want to host from in the "user.setting file" under the "GameHostPort" entry. XP C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting Vista C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of

Umm...yes I am "out here" :) In order to play the game on LAN (ie. within your home on 2 of your 4 computers) you do not need to go out to the internet (or ICO) for anything. 1. Find out the IP address of the system you want to use as the host either by going to the "command prompt" and typing ipconfig, OR going to your "network connections" folder from the "control panel" then right-clicking on the "local area connection" then left-clicking on "status" and finally l

@ jugglingjon Just so you know. Centralized hosting-servers at IC will never happen. The game would need to be re-ritten completely (from p2p to client-server) not to mention the huge, and I mean huge bandwidth requirements to send positional updates for the thousands of units in a late-game environment (the connection for everything would have to be eg. you >> IC >> other player >> IC >> you). The only way to alleviate some of the networking issues (for univer
