I'd give you a hug Bailknight, if it was an appropriate and manly thing to do .. :)

Excellent work mate. Looking forward to the 1.04 compatible version :)
How exactly does Steam help with mp gaming outside of Valve's own games? I bought Company of Heroes off of Steam. Does it do something to help with griefing that I'm not aware of? Impulse will provide UMP (Universal Multiplayer Platform) that has Stardock, Gas Powered Games, and Ironclad (for starters) supporting so you'll be able to do match making based on not just skill level but reputation and friends lists and the like.
You're dead right, Steam mp syste
You do know that Stardock Central precedes Steam by years? More power to Valve and all, I'm a fan but Stardock's been doing digital distribution for a lot longer than Valve has. The only difference is that until recently, Stardock wasn't pursuing major publishers to put their titles onto our network (and we still have dozens of third party titles using our infrastructure despite not trying). I don't think anyone here has a big problem with Steam. I *like* Steam. I use it.
Of course steam sucked at the start - it was trying something very new at the time. But it does not have major problems now. It functions just fine, has a large stable of games, and they are obviously making a fair bit of money with a large supporter base, many of whom are obviously buying all sorts of content (e.g. audiosurf is raking the cash). You know you can buy valve games in a store too, so there is no 'must' in purchasing it on steam, although you do need to have it running to
I'm sure Impulse will have a few hiccups when it gets up and running to (aimed at those ranting about Steam above). These systems are complicated beasts. It will be good having more 'viable' options in the digital download gaming world :) but Steam is currently the king. Stardock/Impulse has a lot of work to do to catch up with them.
just in case people missed the thread in mp, feel free to add me (gapingmaw) in XFIRE. Note though, RL/Family etc tend to control when I can have a game :) .. I'm more than happy to play a game over a few nights/weeks etc using the save function if people are happy with that.
I think you added me the other night. I was wondering who you were :)
so have you gods of sins played out a game yet? I want to see some good LRM counter, RA counter, spam counter replays already :)
hooray :)
SNIP Not sure what you think we're going to do here. We don't like people pirating the game, but if they do buy it afterwards we aren't going to do anything about it, since they're a paying customer either way--that's always been the case. Anyone who pirates the game without buying it though is generally going to get banned the moment we find out.Pirated copies do have a cost, even if the pirate never would have bought it--- Pirates still try to get support, wasting our time and making d
hah, go the hiver voices :) .. I like them more than the Tarka anyday
I presume it is only for ships in the same gravity well?
Sins will never appear on Steam as long as Stardock holds the licensing rights for it. People love Steam for some reason, but it will have some serious competition in a few months...
People love it because it works (it's had plenty of time to iron out the kinks). And also because Valve makes great games that go onto it at relatively cheap prices. It's also a good way to authenticate games before jumping in for mp games (makes publishers/devs happier). Yes, it is a form o
yes, that would be better - and alien enough :)
I refuse to play vasari because the voices grate too much. Bring on the voice mod someone :)
Right, so who has xfire? :) or pm me and lets get some games going.
I always like to get an earlyish culture push in.. can sometimes make it hard for your opponents to take over planets near to your borders - and you can get the culture tech very early in the game. and I too prefer the advent aesthetic over TEC, and the voices over the painful vasari one in particular.
Brisbanite here too.. weekends/evenings are the best bet. Grab me on xfire (gapingmaw) to organise a game. I'm happy to play a few hours and save and continue another night etc etc... :)
Not unreliable at all — if your system is set up to actually weight rankings based on near-neighbors in the notional space. A group of friends who heavily mutually high-rank end up essentially creating an isolated island off to the side of the main body once only a few outsiders down-rate a couple of the members. For a new user of the ranking system, they may get matched with a couple of the isolates a couple times but if they have consistently bad ratings of them as a result, a well-d
agreed - good idea, but not well implemented yet. The AI needs to be smarter about not firing on ships when you are doing jobs for it, and if you are actively at war (ie either of you is bombing each others planets), then it shouldn't offer any work.
if you switch your trade depot to 'refinery' mode - does it stop all trade traffic for the system? i.e. can you have two trade depots with different settings.
I love that piracy vs global temperatures graph.. it's about as scientific (and probably true) as the stuff trotted out by climate warming mongers :) Interestingly, the church of the flying spaghetti monster has that very graph! We need more pirates (sea faring types, arrrrr)
I've got both and love both... here are the relative positives as I see them. SOTS had far superior tactical combat (real time too). SOTS has an excellent tech tree (with randomisation - no two games are the same) SOTS battles are more 'visveral' - moving turrets, moving ships, proper chances to hit based on ballistics (if you are using such weapons) SOTS ship design is excellent (from an art point of view) SOTS - being able to design your own ships w
I'd like to know the answer to this to..
