If it doesn't have multicore support than the devs wasted their time removing an feature that improves performance, as the SupCom engine had it and Demigod is based on that engine.

They have always been able to do this, it's just not practical as the projectile takes so long that you'll get tired of waiting and just send your fleet in to do the job. Just don't colonize the planet for an hour or more otherwise you might end up killing yourself. >.<
With hardware like that, sounds to me like your video adapter doesn't have the proper pixel shader support required by SINS. Nothing you can do about that except not playing it on that system.
Then why did it work for an hour before it broke?

Realistically you would NOT want to have an war in space. All of the debris from all the destroyed ships would make space travel nearly impossible. Also setting off an nuke in orbit or an ship equipped with an nuclear reactor getting destroyed would flood the area with enough radiation that all satellites not shielded against radiation would be disabled/damaged/or rendered an expensive piece of metal. As always, what makes an fun movie or game fun wouldn't be practical in real life.

-Multicore processor support -The ability to go negative speed for those who want to make movies and for slower computers -Capital ships being changed to what they should have been from the start. Extremely powerful and difficult to take out but also very expensive and impact your unit cap.
