One thing to consider would be that if you don't want the tech, you can't really prevent a planet from culture flipping to you. With invasion, you make the decision to invade that planet.
I'm new to the game, so there's probably an obvious answer to this, but under what circumstances would you not want another random tech? I can see techs I wouldn't end up using, but I have yet to notice one that I'd actively avoid.

... Yeah. I know that post wasn't actually witty enough to be repeated twice. Where the heck is the EDIT button when you need it?
antracer: Completely and totally agreed. It must be flexible, which means that the coders building that game must also be flexible. They can't be locked into a rigid structure built because of a TDD that was written a year ago when the game's design was different.Actually, agile development is generally a lot more flexible than other methods of development, and can adapt well to changing requirements. It needs not be TDD: Other forms of agile development, such as Scrum, can be used.In the
You're leaving out the unfortunate fact that game developers roll their eyes and giggle uncontrollably when you say things like "utilizing industry Agile dev principles", "weekly development velocity", and "agile-blend techniques", leaving them unable to maintain physical efficiency. Dilbert strips float through their heads when they hear terms like "TDD", "CI", and "Scrum", blocking out all productive thoughts. I know this because I am one, and I'm afraid my eyes rolled and I
To combat this, in Twilight, they made a tweak so that every tech you researched would make the unresearched ones increase in cost. The intent was that this would be a very small increase, fractions of a percentage point.
Yep. That sounds like a great idea, actually. It'd make you have to specialize in certain techs more, instead of just picking up every one of the cheap ones. Unfortunately, the present "system" seems completely random, and just means that I'll never see
Highly possible, since the case I was talking about, at least, was fighting the Korx. Ooh those unique tech trees sure are full of surprises! ^_^
Well, since I'm brand-new to GalCiv, I've been really enjoying TotA despite the research problem, but I think I'm finally done until the patch. Thank goodness that's supposedly sometime this week! In my current game, colonizable planets are pretty rare, and I'm doing quite well to have four of them. I got seriously lucky, however, because one of those planets has a 300% research bonus AND a 700% research bounus! If that wasn't enough, one of the other planets has a planet-wide
I've also noticed that when I go to war with another race, all of my trade routes shut down due to being "too dangerous", even if they went nowhere near hostile territory. The enemy's routes, however, continue to be active even if I park a fleet on their route and destroy every freighter launched for two years. Do AI routes ever stop?
The idea of 100% taxes is horrifying. ^_^ I know I'd run!
As a brand new player of GalCiv, it's driving me crazy. I'd really love to see more than the first fifth of the tech tree, someday. Nothing like having the choice of researching a cool tech immediately, before building any labs, and having it take 22 weeks to complete, or wait until later when you've cranked out a couple dozen labs, when it'll take only... 22 weeks. :P
Nope. I've had the same thing happen all the time. Unfortunately, the ship it designed with three-times as many weapons of a tech level five higher than I had researched was just too darned ugly for me to actually use. (I'm picky. ^_^) Still, I winced when I deleted it. I believe this is what we call a "bug".
I'm just like you Brad so why does my life suck?
Sorry your life sucks, but assuming it wasn't just a rhetorical question, I can give you an answer... Talent. It makes all the difference in the world. I didn't say I could give you an answer that you'd like.
Well, that's true. I've got to admit that if I wanted to go to war with someone that's trading with me, the loss of of income wouldn't make me think twice about pulling the trigger.
I haven't played a ton yet (on my second game, ever), but I don't know why people always complain that trade is insignificant. I have a large, sprawling empire which fluctuates between the #1, 2, or 3 position, from turn to turn, on a "gigantic" map. I'm presently making 98bc/turn from trade, with about half of that coming from my own four trade routes, without anything other than the first couple of trade improvements, and no racial trade bonuses. My total income/turn
Just thought you might like to know, nothing could convince me to read your post when it's written in dark blue on dark grey. I like my vision too much.
If you haven't seen the bug yet, it's simply because you aren't paying attention. It happens 100% of the time, every game.
If there is a problem finding people to play with, want to know how to make it WORSE? Post crap like this thread.
Master of Orion II = Very, very tasty apples. Total Annihilation = Very, very tasty oranges. They're both, possibly, the very best games in their respective genre, but they are NOT comparable. They're both in my top-ten best games of all time list, but they're NOT comparable. The first post was pathetic spam, but I agree on one point; I'd absolutely love for MOOII to get remade, with no changes except new graphics. MOOIII was utter trash compared to MOOII.
Ah. I've only been playing for just a few hours, so far, so I hadn't seen all that many examples. Amusingly, the only portrait that I'd traded with before making my post was exactly that mustachioed human, so I was mislead! I checked and most portraits do work correctly in the actual trade dialogue. Thanks! (Still should fix those popups, though. ^_^)
Yep! Thank you. I'm only a few turns into my first real game (I experimented a lot before jumping in), but I've already started building sensor craft based on the larger cargo hull, instead of tiny scouts. We seem to have the same mindset when it comes to sensors. Nice looking ship, by the way. I'm still trying to get a handle on what all the ship pieces look like, so I can make more complex vessels. (Probably need to research more than just cargo and tiny hulls, too. ^_^)
^_^ Well, thanks for the info. Like I said, I just got the game, but I figured that something like that was probably a RGB value in some settings file, somewhere, and would be an easy fix. I just figured I'd ask before tearing through all the files looking for an unknown value. Oddly, after a few days of playing, it's not bugging me so bad. My wife still looks over and says, "ew", though, so it's not very pretty.
Boy, the useful replies just keep on a'comin'... Thanks for bumping the thread, though.
Well, call me surprised. I expected this to be an easy question with an easy answer. Four days have proved that wrong, I guess. Nobody knows how to change the FOW color?
I'm completely new to this game (owned it for 3 days), so for all I know this is an ancient bug, or not a bug at all, but I can't use the search engine to find an answer to my question, because the search feature NEVER WORKS. Anyway, I'm very curious about the way race portraits are displayed in the game. There seem to be two sizes of them; a little square one used in selection screens, and a wider one that's used in diplomatic dialogues. All races seem to have a small "RaceImage",
Wow. I just bought the game bundle and after seeing screenshots of the original invasion screen I was, believe it or not, looking forward to seeing the old MOOII-style soldiers battling it out in all their tiny glory, but with slightly newer, fresher graphics in Twilight. I've got to say, I'm immensely disappointed in this new "improvement". Oh, well...
