Tridus, Willy is NOT talking about how to install the alpha. He is talking about DEBUGGING it.
Really?
I hope their would be a post announcing it with instructions on how to download and install it.
Seems fairly clear to me. :P
You have me mistaken sir. I don't dislike the fact that people ramble on these forums. Heck, from time to time the devs actually do look in here (Right? You guys do that, right? Hello?... You there?...) and maybe take certain things into account. Ultimately though, I think we're in the wrong forum for "developmental assistance" as it were. If the devs do have a problem with something, or if they are truly unsure about the public&

When the alpha comes out, it'll be a Steam code. The instructions will be pretyt much what they are for all Steam gifts: 1. Install steam 2. Login/create an account 3. Enter this code

I kind of like the concept of a low budget alien option anyways.
No, I love humour. It just has to be funny to be called that. A thread going on about which Hollywood personality Aki should look more like is not. It's stupid.

This change could make them move up and become my favourite race instead of the Yor. Also, I think she's attractive. Low budget aliens versus intelligent robots. The Altarians have better tech, but they can't afford makeup.
Maybe they're

Waste is one of those things that you want to eliminate because it tends to lead to very bad micromanagement at high difficulties. What happened in Civ (IIRC it was Civ IV) was on the last turn of a tech, people would micromanage to have as little waste as possible because minimizing it meant a bit more gold or production instead. The fix was just to have spillover to the next tech by holding the excess points. Without any waste, there was no longer a point in minimizing it. This was
Yes, this is a game, yes, there are assumptions and approximations, but by and large research cap is the only thing that could go to waste because of breaking point in "man-weeks" and there is no way to transfer it for next tech you want, not next tech in the tree. After all, it is already implemented, all I want is being able to pick sequence of tech to be studied, precisely to a stage.
Yes there is. If the tech you want f
I really like large tech trees with lots of different areas to research, but being able to research multiple things at once sounds like far too much hassle. Yes, a huge galaxy spanning Empire would be researching multiple things at once, but this is a game, and it requires a certain amount of abstraction to be fun. Stick to researching a single research goal at a time please.
Amen. In

Not sure when I'd be using it, but this is one of the games I can actually see the appeal for. Strategy games are a favorite on my iPad for exactly the mentioned reasons.

Well, single player "competitive" play could be done with the Metaverse like GC2, assuming games are scored (and I'd expect they would be). Higher score, the better you did. With MP, it'd just be whoever wins the game by whatever means. In those cases custom races can get iffy because if they can be gamed to advantage, they will be very popular. But the super racial traits aren't really a big problem there since every race has one, and race selection already matters. It&#3
There is potentially a really easy fix for that. Let's say that there are four negative options and four positive options per skill tree. For every point you put into a negative, the next point gives you an exponentially larger negative. Whereas if you put a point into the positive, the next point after that gives you a smaller boost than the original +1 (Example: First Weapons point gives +10%, next point only boosts it up to 17%. The only issue I have with this is that people tend to game it. Figure out how you're going to play, take positives that boost that, and take negatives that hinder something else and thus aren't really a huge negative. It's a good way to min/max the system. Age of Wonders 2 was notorious for that (if you're playing as Life or Death, you could take the "Anarchist" penalty and it was really just free stats as it did absolutely nothing that mattered), but Endless Space ha
I don't see the value in removing the sliders. letting you set the exact production amount you want. Some plaints may have a dual focus, going 45 10 45 or 50/50 Perhaps a simple mode "dial" and advanced mode "sliders" option.
In the screen shot of the UI, you can do that on the triangle control with one thing instead of setting two sliders. Sliders are a poor UI tool when you need more than on
Second, the paths to acquire a tech need to be complex, require various prerequisite, and vary somewhat between each game. Some techs may have more than one prerequisite. A tech may not be researched unless at least one of its prerequisite is already unlocked. The more prerequisite unlocked prior to researching the target tech, the more efficient (quicker) (higher probability) will be the effort to acquire the tech. Pre

Yes, that type of thing works too. The catch is that doing it has to be so expensive in terms of research that I can't go "well I took all the farming tech, now I can catch up on ship tech because I can research 3 of them a turn due to how old they are" type of thing. Most tech trees in games are designed to keep the tech flowing, and thus it's hard for the tech tree to really specialize you. A more middle road option is to have all basic techs available at a normal price, and

121 Replies 380,347 Views

Yeah, for sure. But for that to work, the tree needs to be big and slow enough to navigate that you can't easily backfill. Otherwise it's not really a playstyle affecting choice, it's a "I'm going to do this until it gets expensive, then I'll go spend 5 turns picking up all the old techs in the other direction I need" type of thing. Which is fine, but it's not really differentiating things a whole lot. The best way to do that is with mutually exclusive tech bra
Those aren't "global government seat" kind of capitals, rather than somewhat narrow specializations kind of capitals. So I see no problems with them moved closer to where the situation is more suitable for them. Imagine we have our own Silicon Vallen, huge R&D dedicated planet, or even cluster of those. IMHo it would only be wise to relocate your R&D "capital" seat there, to reduce time delays needed to control R&D stations
Just because a feature is functional doesn't mean it is interesting or particularly useful.
Functional is a key requirement. So are things like the AI being able to navigate it, and players being able to understand it. The standard tech tree does all those things. Any "improvement" needs to also do all those things, or it's not actually better. Complexity for the sake of complexity is not a bonus if it breaks

There is no even remotely firm date at this point. Late January was thrown around as a guesstimate IIRC, but it can change by a wide margin on no notice. I kind of expect it in March, just so it can conflict for my time with the Diablo 3 expansion and Age of Wonders 3. :D They have said that they'll provide advance notice if the founders packages are going to no longer be for sale, so there will be advance warning of that. :)
