I can't even begin to tell how horrible it would be to miss Tad Williams - Otherland series.. I want to read it for the first time again... It's awesome. :)
I guess that would depend on your def of "sivilized", wouldn't it? How about a "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you button"? To get back on topic before this REALLY get out of hand.. :p ... Wish someone would invent... A civilized population civilizer... Then the civilized world could perhaps be civilized, as it claims to be... Now that would be wonderful. :)
The UAC is completely unacceptable to me. I won't use ANY version of windows that does that to me.I'll buy a Mac first (shudder) or find a utility that shuts it down!!
It doesn't bother me THAT much really. It's a good idea, even though it's stupidly implemented. Imho software shouldn't be allowed to request adminprivileges from the system, it should request it from the *user*. The solution is simple, just remove all prompting and keep
Ummm - I'm not sure what you're running that requires 'hundreds of libraries'
It's not a single piece of software obviously. Just list how many "lib-" packages you have, and then tell me it's not hundreds. There are forked libs, forks of forked libs, distributionrelated patches, kernel version patches and their uncles and granddaddies. The same goes for the software components... Windows isn't so much better really, but atlea

Vista really doesn't have many problems, a lot of hardware has problems with Vista though. Initially the problem was that microsoft didnt provide enough information to hardware manufacturers on how to code proper drivers. Things have changed since, if you buy good hardware with properly coded drivers today, you'll have a very stable system. Windows 7 uses the same driver architecture as Vista, and now hardware manufacturers know how to code for it. (There are

They all look great, though I have to agree with the rest... Wow Libardo, your contributions are just ... I'm speechless... I just wish these challenges was slightly different... I have tons of ideas, but not the patience (or knowhow *yet* :p) to realize them... If they just focused on the idea rather than realization, I'd have a shot... hehe.

I remember the good old days, when an OS was just an OS... I don't want a "complete" system, I want a platform to run my own choice of software. Windows 7 seem to be going in the right direction. As for Ubuntu to be better... Well... Sure... It has its good bits, but to run the software I like I need to install literally hundreds of different librarypackages, some of the HUGE, which includes 2 complete desktop systems (gnome and KDE). I need perl, tex, python and whatever... It's

Purpose: To see if I can do it. And well, people let me optimize their systems, I need to find a working solution so I don't need to help them too often. :) Goal: A clean smoothly running computer with a minimal amount of effort. The aim is to use as few different software components as possible. How to achieve the goal: Seems reasonable to use a freely available software suite. That way I don't ne

The multicore feature is awesome if it actually works. Quad core CPU + 4x dual core GPU... Now that'll be horsepower to call mom about. It requires a personal nuclear powerplant as powersupply, but that's beside the point... :P I'm not surprised by the lack of XP support. If you want to run a recent game, you need a recent computer. With a recent computer, you will want a recent OS. Most likely it'll be Windows 7, it's looking real good from

I'm using 2 computers, my main computer (running Vista) and my lab/guest computer (running XP). They're both on simultaneously, but most of the time I'm the only one using them (they are in separate rooms, so I don't use them at the same time). Occasionally I let a friend use my lab computer for whatever they need to do on the net while sitting at my own computer. @Stardock; I suppose in a strict sense, this violates the EULA, and I might get in trouble for writing this post

As far as I'm concerned, this is a minor problem with the complete suite. It's new software, bugs are likely. Internationalization on windows is a pain in the neck. Life goes on. Noone died from lack of bootskin (yet ;P ). Enjoy your themed desktop, the world doesn't end because you got the default picture at boot... I doubt you got OD Ultimate because you wanted bootskin pro. And so on forever and ever and ever and ever... :)
