Well, it seems like a new business model, started by EA, to change customers into a monthly income source. EA CEO sort of said that a while back.
Exactly. The rise of the Western MMO has shown developers it's far more profitable to have a continual income source rather than the burst income that is paid from retail sales. This is why I no longer do business with EA in any way, shape or form. The problem with EA is that before this

I played a game recently that was clearly an abuse of the system, I'll refrain from using specifics as I only have my gut feeling to go off and not hard evidence. The players in the game commented that they were new players and were looking for equal skilled opponents and a non-stacked game. As anyone who has seen my online stats can attest, I'm not the best player in the world and so I thought these guys might be on my skill level and would give us all a fun, yet challenging, game. A
Ah, sort of "renting" the game? That's actually a very good idea that takes advantages of the unique 'pros' of digital distribution as it would allow people to trial the game at any time in it's complete form. I'd still like to see the free weekends, part of the reason why I played L4D to begin with was that it was free, however I see no reason why the two can't co-exist.
Just lost a game where the enemy had fully upgraded their troops - you could really feel the punishment.
The building health upgrade is usefull when you know your towers are going to take a lot of damage at some point. I haven't had the opportunity to use the +DMG upgrade for the towers much over level two, most games don't last long enough.
Couldn't have said it better, Sly.

I would like to think the Demo would include offline Skirmish of the same map available online. This would give people a chance to practice before heading out into the abyss we call the internet. I know my first games with Demigod were offline to learn a thing or two before jumping in. If it doesn't provide the single player part, I'd have to question the logic behind the decision. This isn't Counter-Strike; it's a lot more complex.
I'd post the word I use to describe them, but I'm sure the profanity filter's reaction would crash the forum servers.
I blame stupid kids, stupid parents and XBOX360... Harvard Business School would be a distant runner up-- why give away what you SHOULD when MOUTH BREATHERS will PAY for it. Horrible, horrible business model. DrGonzo PS: I don't consider Entrenchment to be DLC. You and I obviously have a different definition of minimum. Because minimum is zero. Compared to the rest of the content of the game, DLC is OBSCENELY expensive... Like $2.50 for some horse ar
My current understanding is that the patch 1.1 will be released this week, and the Demo will be based on this code when it launches the following week. This might have changed, however I don't recall reading that it had.
I think the trend to move away from the free patches of yester-year to the DLC of today is linked with the arrival of Digital Distribution. Companies now have open to them avenues for providing content without the costs of retail packages, as psychoak detailed. It annoys me, however, when games on the Xbox 360 receive priced DLC that the PC version of the same game received for free in an update. I think the move towards DLC is fine, as long as companies don't abuse it. Bethesda tread
I believe the Demo is slated for next week sometime actually, although it might get pushed back a little. Keep an eye open for it, you won't regret it [e digicons]^_^[/e]
Competitions of Starcraft get huge following. I suppose its the way they want to market it. Next stop the Olympics...
The following this game has in Korea is legendary, however I think Blizzard are going to shoot themselves in the foot if they focus exclusively on this market. I played Starcraft way-back-when because it was fun. If you jump onto Battle.net now, 10 years later, you'll be kicked from a game in seconds if you'r
While I'm looking forward to Starcraft II enourmously, every time I watch these I can't help but feel they're tailoring it to the E-Sports crowd. Also, it saddens me that 10 years after the original Starcraft the HUD still takes up a full third of the screen.
I think what you decide to buy with your money should always be your choice. Communicating with your team is the best idea, so instead of introducing an unrequired dialogue box that interupts the game for all players on that team, talk with your team and develop your strategy so that you don't need a method to control your team mates and force them into doing what you think is the best way to win.
I think Deepjay has nailed the general shift of the online communities based around these kinds of games. The combination of the "I'm better than you" attitude that competitive games both attract and bring out in people, as well as the wonderful anonymity of the internet, always generate forum communities where the whiners scream louder than the people who are happy with the game. I guess I'd just like Gas Powered Games to be as open as Stardock is. I've just been impressed by the man
Well, you created a topic based the concept that piracy could be used to generate additional revenue, while the very concept of piracy is to avoid just that, so you should be prepared for a little counter-argument. Anyway, in it's currrent state piracy can only be used as a form of advertising if the game, at release and thus as available to pirates, was flawless. Although the tech community on several of these sites pirates produces patches for their cracked versions based on offical
My general rules, and this can change depending on my opponents tactics: Gold Upgrade 1. The sooner you get it, the more gold you'll have collectively across the duration of the match. XP Upgrade 1. Usually, I only get this if there is an XP flag, as mentioned above. This will increase the XP gap between yourself and your opponents enough to help decide the outcome of the game. Building Regen 1. If your enemies are pushing against your towers right
The major concern I have with L4D2 is that the sequel will ship with all 4 of the original campaigns - making the original product redundent in every way. I recently purchased L4D, and so my position is a little different from those who purchased the game at release. My understanding, as seems to be the majority of the community, was that L4D was going to be expanded upon with free updates and possibly DLC, which seemed like a perfect fit for me. I've purchased several games off of Steam, mos
Every time I read your posts, my head hurts. However, I agree with your general idea - GPG should be letting the community know whats happening. These two Demigods were supposed to be based off of our ideas - it'd be nice to be kept in the loop about how they're going. Even if it's just theory talk.

As I posted in a different thread, the players who stick around for the new content are not going to make up the majoirty of the community. Every community has these players - they flock back for a week once the new content is released, till they've used it up, and then they leave again. Tailoring to these players originated with the Western MMO scene, where players would need to pay for a months subscription fee to come back and see the newly added content. The community is currently
No news for a while... GPG seem to have distanced themselves from this game (and star dock) and it would seem that all of their focus is on SC2. Stardock seem busy with their new game too... where does this leave DG? As Frogboy has already pointed out, the immense amount of contact between the Publishers - that's Stardock - and the community was mostly due to the major problems the game had upon release. The idea was to keep the community informed as best as possible while th
