For what it's worth, after installing the latest ATI drivers as Cari requested (which required that I install the .NET framework), my system started to degrade. To make a long long story short, this last weekend I wiped my C drive and reinstalled XP. I have now reinstalled Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, and several TotalGaming.net products. Miraculously, GC2 works! I am delighted that I can finally participate in the beta (unfortunately so late that I don't know i

It's not just GalCiv2. I hadn't played GC:AP for about a month, so I tried to fire it up and it failed to start, too. SmartException didn't catch it, though. GC1 doesn't work, and neither does the Political Machine. All of these worked not long ago. The only things I can think of that I've installed recently (since GC:AP last worked) are: - Many Microsoft patches automatically downloaded - New versions of Stardock Central - A couple of
I've installed the latest drivers from ATI and continue to hit this problem. I sent the SmartException report to .
I have the latest ATI drivers available via Windows Update. I'll check the ATI website and let you know.
More information, if needed - my DirectX level is 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904), my display adapter is an ATI Radeon 9200. It sure would be nice to be able to join the beta.
While agreeing with Yaguer on the thesis, I must point out the inaccuracy of the original statement that there has "NEVER been a female ... human". The original GC (for OS/2) had static images of 2 human women that appeared announcing GNN news items. One appeared for good civilizations, and the other for evil. GC for Windows replaced them with the robot moving its arms.
I installed the beta for the first time today, and on trying to start the game for the first time hit a CTD. The crash is repeatable. The SmartException report has been sent to with the subject "GALCIV2 - 0x5c7a50".
Strange. Reset list is not greyed out for me ... it took 3 tries to get it to actually update, though. ~SDC~
It's fixed for me. SDC updated itself when I started it, and after right clicking on "GalCiv Forum" and selecting "Reset List", I can now see new posts. ~SDC~
GalCiv forum still gone.
Try this: Allow SDC to update. Right mouse click on "GalCiv Forum". Select "Reset List". SDC will download a new list of forums. After doing that GalCiv Forum worked for me. ~SDC~
I agree with Martin that there should be positive feedback on successful submission of a game. Last week I had to submit a game 4 times to get the metaverse to accept it. ~SDC~
Thanks for the tip, MoseyingAlong. Resubmitting my last end game save caused the Metaverse to recognize my last 2 game submissions. ~SDC~
I use the mini-colony ship exclusively. If I know I'm going to a good quality planet (19 or higher) I'll put up to 300 or 400 on it. For unknown or known 15-18 I'll usually load up between 100 to 200. For class 14 and the rare 13 that I colonize I'll only load up 50 to 75. I'm sure others have their own rules of thumb, this is what has worked for me. Once you colonize a system with fewer than 200, beware of building more colony ships from that system too fast - if you drain the po
Re: "more presents" - ok, thanks. I thought I had waited more than 3 months, but maybe not. And yes, I had the Diplomatic Translators, I always go for those ASAP. I've been submitting tiny maso military (cultural flip) games for quite a while now, but I just submitted my first gigantic maso alliance win using this strategy. I'm not planning to grind out games like those of you on the top of the Metaverse, but I thought it was interesting trying out the strategy. Thanks to al
Peace Phoenix is correct, GC Gold was the final OS/2 release. I still have my CD ;) ~SDC~
It really depends on your "diplomacy" rating. But, you should be able to brive them with a tech each three turns, or 10 bc for 50 turns and that will keep them at least neutral if not move them to friendly.
I was using Research, Inc, but not the extra diplomacy picks. When the Korx started to turn on me I tried bribing them, but started getting the "Oh, more presents" response that doesn't improve the situation. Maybe my diplomacy wasn't high enough or I wasn't giving g
In the other (hopefully dead) thread you mentioned that you set the AI opponents to all the same morality, the one that you intend to end up as. I gave that a try recently (set them all to good) and didn't have enough morality events to move me out of neutrality. The Korx moved from neutral to cool to hostile and finally declared war on me, even though I was trying to bribe them. So, my questions, O Great One, do you use any event mods? Like the Saints and Sinners pack? Do you set
The Yor are always on the top of my hate list but the Korx and Dregin get not so honorable mention as well.
But the Drengin are so cuddly! :D :D :D ~SDC~
Which is why I'm keeping my TGN subscription up to date ... forever ... ;) ~SDC~
Nice to make your acquaintance. :) ~SDC~
From my experience they do surrender to you when your at war with them but very rarely....
VERY rarely, in my experience. Twice in all the games I've played. But it can happen. And it's SO nice when it does. :D :D ~SDC~
Real Programmers code in assembler. With no comments. If it's hard to code, it ought to be hard to for others to read and debug. LOL LOL LOL ~SDC~
If you like the pacifist/trading strategy you might want to check out the "Research, Inc" political party mod in the mod library. IMHO it's a very nice mod. ~SDC~
I bet I have most beat at 50 years old in March!
I'm not as old as Elrikk, but have you beat by 3 years, DF. ;) ~SDC~
Happy New Year, DF! Well, almost, we've got 8 1/2 hours to go here in California ... ~SDC~
