Another very minor "polish" problem. When bringing up the planets list, the list seems to appear with the last selected planet in the ones visible, but the scroll bar does not reflect the correct position - e.g. the scroll bar make it look like you're at the top of the list, but you're not.

Possible "polish" problem. The yearly report numbers (at least some of them) appear to be off. For example, my population is increasing exponentially, but each of the last 4 yearly reports tells me that I've had a negative population change (forex -110.4 billion). A popup came up comparing me with the Dregin, saying that they rated a 4 in research, and I rated a 4. The next yearly report said I was 435 in research.
That bug has been around for a few builds. At least one other person besides me has reported it here. There was some speculation that it was related to the distance the freighter had traveled, as if a trade route longer than some distance X couldn't be handled correctly.
Tried to reproduce the above problem, entering everything exactly the same way, and couldn't reproduce it. As a software developer myself, I hate it when a tester reports an intermittent problem. >:(
After selecting my player name, adjusting abilities, setting planets to "abundant" (I like that better than "everywhere", BTW), I tried to increase the galaxy size. After setting it to "huge" I clicked once more on the right arrow and the game locked up hard. Could not ctl-alt-delete, had to power off. Win98 SE, Matrox G450. Here's the log: Debug Message: ******* Starting Game Shell ******* Debug Message: Going Fullscreen Debug Message: RGB in format 5:6:5, Masks reported
Rather than start my own thread, I'll add on here. I had a game on 4A that was an 18x18 galaxy that was well into the end game. I had over 300 ships and dominated, although 4 of the major aliens were still hanging on. The game hit a hard lockup, I could not even ctl-alt-delete out of it. I downloaded 4B, and after loading the game I got the tech completed window, hit "done", and then got this CTD: Stardock SmartException Logging Information 01/04/03 22:41:19 ------------------
These starbases really change the game. I was wondering for the first couple of games how to boost my planet's production. Now I know that I can do it with a starbase. Question: Does it provide any social/military production advantage to build more than one starbase in a sector?
Improvements I've noticed on the OS/2 version: - The tech tree is much wider and more interesting. The OS/2 game usually turned into a race to Avatar tech. There are other methods in this game. - Diplomacy. The method of trading is much more flexible and more powerful than in the OS/2 game.
Cari, in my project (Lucky Jack and I used to work together) there's a guy who has over 60 "severity 1" problems assigned to him, with 3 different managers asking for daily status reports ... a problem created by management, who reassigned everyone else who knew the component he's responsible for to other projects. But enough about Dilbert=Reality. Thanks very much for your great work! It's fantastic to be able to interact with you via these forums.
I just got a very similar exception when selecting the minor races tab, but unlike previous reports in this thread, there were still at least 2 minor races active. Interesting, I didn't know that the AI's couldn't buy ships. Anyway, it does make more sense to buy ships in this game since you start off with a much larger population.
Lucky Jack, even though your post was not intended to be directed to me, I feel compelled to point out that I've been in software development for more years than I care to admit to, and in my experience frustration, angst, etc aren't limited to the end of the cycle. I live in a Dilbert world, I hope and pray that Stardock is better. Anyway, even with the crashes and other problems I've talked about in several threads on this forum, I'm really enjoying the game and just want it to be
Is it really necessary to buy colony ships at the beginning? In the OS/2 game I used to just crank up my spending to 100% until my treasury got low, and I could produce colony ships reasonably quickly. Of course in that game you started with a much lower population, so you had to be careful not to drain your population too quickly.
The last 2 games I've played (one on beta 4 and now one on 4A) I've played evil, and have not had any planets defect. I've tried to keep the morale high, and planted starbases next to systems I thought might be subject to alien influence. So far I can't see any difference between good and evil with respect to planets defecting.
Strongly agree with #11. On #12, I'd find it more useful if I could trust the information in it. On 4A I find I'm not getting notified anymore when one of my planets or starbases is attacked by pirates. I'd like that to be in the message window/summary box (whatever it's called) so that I could quickly go to that planet/starbase.
Thanks, Solitair, I'll give that a try.
I've also reported the problem of the planet of origin being changed. I've seen it in 3 different games now.
gherardo, do you mean Star Emperor? I have a copy of that. Instead of colonizing, you sent out ships that caused each system you landed on to "ally" with you, and each system brought with it one tech or ship type it could build. Some of the ship classes were Bulldog and Hero. Sound like the same game?
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give that a try. Of course the last game I thought I was going to win through influence about 2 hours before I actually did. I'll tell my wife the Narn Bat Squad is coming to visit. ;)
Thanks, Arturus. Since I'm on a slow dial-up line (a curse of living in a rural area) that I share with other family members, I suspect I will very rarely be logged on when I finish a game. (:(
I saw that on beta 4 also.
I'm mostly with Wryenn. I like to see and micro manage everything. I did use the governors sometimes in the OS/2 game, but mostly to switch the system resources to research or to military production. The OS/2 governor's window also had the option to switch all planets building project A to project B (e.g. change all planets building Avatars to building Excaliburs instead). Looks like this version lacks that. BTW, hit a hard lockup earlier today when I assigned two colony ships to au
Thanks, Technician, that worked to get me registered. How do you submit scores?
How does one post a game to the metaverse? When registering your player to the metaverse, it asks for your serial number. Is that the drengin.net number, or some other number unique to galciv? Thanks.
Ted asked for the mini-map to have min/max buttons. IIRC, in the OS/2 game it did. I found it very useful, and would like to second Ted's suggestion
