Ya know you're right - loading a save fixes the problem. It's still a polish issue, but more minor than I initially thought.

Insane world difficulty, expert faction AI. I love the mobs to be dangerous, and the faction AI to get a slight edge. Last build I was in an epic fight for my life that came down to 2 pivotal battles to stay alive. [0990 CTD] Turn 1 Ctrl-N Crash in FE Support Elemental Forums

Started new game, ctrl-u to confirm missing trees are back (after starting game in admin mode), ctrl-u to revert back to normal, ctrl-n to restart map, alt-tab, CTD. No saves since turn 1, here's the dump .
