I don't disagree with you about it being a good thing for the artists. And for the last time WE DON'T HAVE THE TIME. Otherwise we probably would enter. But you know what brad raising awareness for the Humane Society and the World Wildlife Fund just seem so much more important than your little contest that i couldn't possibly see me taking time away from those things to "win a faux gold medal" from you.

moshi: If you knew our workload you would know odds are they won't have time. But they are certainly free to compete if they want. I wouldn't hold your breath though. We get around 15-20 job inquiries every month - sometimes more. It's just too much money to pass up to compete in such a short time frame for what amounts to be "bragging rights" that you won a contest. These guys have families to feed. It was a little "out of the blue" Baker not to be taken as a slight. Felt more like a "face-rubbing" then a "and now a word from our sponsor" type post. I'm not saying people shouldn't be doing this. I'm saying if we had free time we would be working on the charity skins we pledged to do - not participating in a contest. To me charity is more important. That was a personal statement on my part. Doesn't apply to anyone else.
Well threads about IP rights have come and gone what we need is some attorneys to "step up to the plate" and donate some of their valuable knowledge. Any takers?
nah... Besides we're too busy to do anything for fun. Too many clients. And when we do have free time we'll be doing the skins for the World Wildlife Fund and the Humane Society. We've spoken to both organizations and Microsoft and everyone's onboard. I think those things are a little more important than a contest.
You know i just thought of something.... With the large user base here, there are certainly some attorneys out here that could possibly create some templates for artists who need contracts. Some "pro-bono" work to help the community? Maybe they could offer advice once in awhile to artists who have legal questions. Think we should start a thread for that? Maybe get the admins to pin it to the top of the board? Might be a great benefit for all.
Oh i didn't take what you said to be a declaration that skinners weren't real artists at all. I thought your points were very clear. And yes the practices of doing comps for free have been going on for a long time. Skinning and UI design is a very niche field. We also build in our "usage rights" into the costs where other companies might charge usage fees to their clients if they did say a POP-display along with the cost of creating the assets. Shameless Designs: You're absolutely right and it does depend on the industry. In your industry (Industrial Design i imagine and in the advertisment industry, companies will have to do mock-ups and bid for work. The software interface industry is different as it is more "niche" and the number of competitors who actually pose a "threat" are few and far between. Will that change? I'm sure it will. By the time it does i'm pretty sure we will have such an advantage that we won't be hurting too much.
