I don't get it. How? Chickie, they wrap the exe file with spyware. The exe installs the spyware before the logon file is available. If you don't accept the spyware, you get no logon. Hence, you see this notice on their site. "This author has generously allowed us to wrap this file to help keep our costs down. Click here for more information."

It's hard to say what you've done to your system recently, if it was working before.
If your image uses shadows or, is non rectangular, it is best to use vectors to draw them, and save as tga or png. I prefer png because it is easier to modify them later. Magic pink bmp files can be a pain in the arse for shadows and non rectangular images.

I tried StyleXP for awhile, but I was very unhappy with it. It kept crashing my system. Plus, I like the windowblinds themes much better. Some programs don't follow the normal skinning guides. Some programs have their own way of skinning the program. Therefore, some programs won't skin the way others will skin. If you fix it for one specific program, you may mess up the entire skin. I suggest adding an exclusion for a program that makes it difficult to read.
For example, can anybody replace the START with a STOP, or an END, in the menu taskbar? Sure, you can do it. Open SS and find the taskbar button and happy skinning. Maybe you can create a Backward OS.
Try this. When you call the Norton AV to your desktop, see what process starts. You can do this by opening your task manager and set it to view processes. For me it is Nmain.exe. Then you can try to add that program to the exclusion.

No, they will not run safely side by side. If side by side, you mean both of them activated. You can probably turn one off and run the other one. I've heard a few people say that they had both on their systems. I just stay away from the shell hacks that StyleXP does myself. Note: If a program is loaded or running, you should always exit from the running processes(I.E.-Exit from the program) before you try to uninstall it. If you right click the windowblind icon in the tray and click unload windowblinds that will do the trick. It will set you back to the classic desktop. Then, you can uninstall.
Extract them to your Windows folder. This is what I do too, and you can view/load them from Display Properties. I think the My Pictures folder works the same.
