EDIT: Stay away from any upgrade edition as it requires XP to be installed, my experience upgrading over XP (shame on Microsoft for forcing this on people) has been it stinks, don't do it. Nope! I've grown very comfortable with my Vista Ultimate. And I didn't even have to upgrade my 3 year old computer to get all the bangs and whistles. 4.2 Performance rating. And I got an OEM System Builder edition so it didn't cost me much.
Mostly ok. One thing I hate is the download dialogue - instead of XP's drop down folder list you have an address bar which looks like a throwback to a DOS tree, or a tiny box to browse posibly dozens of folders. What pisses me off is the 'junk faxes'. They do more than just interrupt, as they also waste paper/ink. Send an fax back where you tape the end of your fax together to make a loop.

I find it great. I really like how the filesystem is presented and there's always a quick search field. And it seem to boot up quicker than my XP system even. There's a couple of glitches here and there but it's due to third party software not 100% compatible with Vista yet. But all in all I'm very happy and I find XP to be more and more awkward to go back to.

It depends on the skin/theme. In most cases you should be able to double click the skin/theme file you downloaded and the appropriate program should launch and handle the skin/theme. That is provided you installed the correct program needed to use the skin you downloaded. Each gallery section explains what program you will need.

Not with scripting as far as I'm aware of. For DesktopX you'll have to create an ActiveX, COM or plugin to do such.

If you upgraded from a previous version of Windows, run Disk Cleanup and that should allow you to get rid of backup files from the upgrade installation. That should free some space. But Vista takes up more space in general. Not a huge issue considering the cheapness of storage these days.

I have the clear type tuner but on a crt,sometimes clear type is more like smear type. That's because ClearType uses the spesific way that the RGB colours are located in LCD monitor. It uses the R, G and B elements as subpixels. But as CRT monitors are buildt differently they often don't look very well. calibri, you can get it from my warsux skin. I thought that one looked bad unless clear type was on... than
I'm wondering if they are running in some sort of ActiveX control. Don't see it being converted to HTML and JS code because it'd involve converting DX objects into HTML elements and manipulating the DOM etc. Whether it's VBscript or JScript shouldn't matter. Since Sidebar Gadgets are HTML pages powered by IE I'd expect Sidebar Gadgets can be written in VBScript as well.
