I'm in the South East, Mr Benn. Compared to the situation with web jobs, those looking for IT positions have a virtual goldmine open to them. If you know Visual Basic or C++ or whatever, there are literally hundreds of jobs out there. If you're skilled with Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash on the other hand, you're pretty much screwed. I've been trying to get something for almost six months now. I'm out of work at the moment, so it's becoming increasingly desperate - hence my driving fo

Unfortunately I didn't get the job in the end. I guess that's what happens when you try for a Junior position with over 2 years of previous experience. I felt positively old sitting there amongst the other candidates, and I'm only just 25! Let's just hope it isn't another year before I get my next interview...

How about setting up some system which could filter out mail based on how many of your subscribers it was sent to. You could set up a 'bait' page on the web with a list of all the subscribers e-mail addresses, with the intention of these bots picking those addresses up, and then when an identical mail comes in to every mailbox on the subscriber list it gets treated as spam. This would allow actual subscription content like newsletters to get through okay, as theoretically those mails wouldn't ge

Glen, a rip by definition is the stealing of another artist's graphics to create a new skin and taking credit for them. I too have examined these two skins side by side and apart from some similarities in layout (and only small similarities at that, given the constraints of the medium), I can see nothing that constitutes a rip. That is, unless you consider your own skin a rip of Windows XP? As the others have said, if you don't like 'imitation', steer clear of OS-themed skins. Although

Rippers will never respect the rights of original authors, so making official ports is simply making the best of a bad situation. I'll always strive to protect my intellectual property and copyrights, but the fact is that one person can only do so much. I can stop one rip through a couple of days of investigation and mailing cease and desists, but during that time two more potential rips may have come into being. In the end, I consider the creation of official ports to be the o

As for official ports only fuelling the rippers, I'd tend to disagree. I would actually like to see ports of my more popular skins over to MSStyles, if only to let those people who are not aware of WindowBlinds know that there is a good alternative out there. Sure, they can have metalX as an MSStyle with basic functionality, but if they want custom colors and all the other extra functionality of the WB version, they need to buy WindowBlinds to get it. It could actually be good

To be honest Neil, I'd rather have one high quality port than ten poor rips floating around. I investigated porting it myself after the original attempts at ripping, but I just couldn't spare the time to learn a second skinning language just to prevent rippers from stealing my work. As I only use WindowBlinds anyway, doing ports in my own time would just be a waste. I do think that no matter what you do to try and prevent rips, there will always be those people who cut and paste out of

(Reposted from a related thread) Do we have anyone here who is able to do professional quality ports of WB skins to MSStyle format? If we can get a few people doing quality official ports of our skins, the rippers will be out of action and will have to use some creativity for a change. Although I'm no fan of the format, and I consider it largely inferior to WB, I'd be perfectly willing to work with someone to get at least a basic port of metalX done. Ports of my other skins are

I had a long heated discussion with the admins at NeoWin a while ago about what goes on in the so-called skinning forums over there. Their excuse was that NeoWin isn't a skinning site, and they can't be expected to moderate all the threads on the site. I honestly believe that closing that section of the forums would go a long way to curbing the ripping that goes on. I have reported the above thread to the moderators, and have thus far had no response. The thread has gone from o

It's behaviour like this that makes me seriously consider retiring from skinning altogether. It's terribly exhausting trying to knock some sense into these people. Rippers are destroying our community.
