Well I'm using ColdFusion 5, which apparently is pretty good with session variables with large numbers of concurrent users. I think I'll stick to what I'm doing for the time being. Well jark, that's the method I'm currently putting together for my forums - session variables and a table matching users to messages with last viewed time/date. Without 300,000 people to test them though, whichever method I use will be nothing but a vaguely educated guess.

Well it's around half-completed, but I haven't really had the time to work on it, or any other skins for that matter, for a while now due to some new non-skinning projects. The possibility of it ever getting finished and released is still there, but for the time being it only exists as a weird hybrid with metalX and some sliced-up images in Fireworks. If demand is high enough, I will probably do so
Is there any practical advantage using cookies to keep track of read threads over using a table in the database? It must cause havoc for those people using more than one machine. I've just re-read that, and it sounds like I'm criticizing. I'm not, I'm actually pretty interested in how this thing works.
After Hippy's post, I think I should clarify my position on the whole subscription thing. I have absolutely no problem with the subscription system, apart from possibly making SkinBrowser available through ODNT, but that's another issue. I too tend to hold the opinion that without that 1% of skinners, you wouldn't have the 99% of users in the first place. All you'd have is an empty library with a message board tagged on. I do therefore think that the opinions of the skinners should be listened to above those of the users. That doesn't mean the users' opinions aren't important, or any less valid, but with a site like this it's the skinners who are needed to keep things ticking over. Getting the subject back to David's original post, rather than just general Stardock bashing, here are my thoughts. 1) I agree. The library should, by default, be sorted in descending order of creation date. Listing the skins in order of last update only creates hassles when you want to just browse the library to see what's new. As it is, you have to wade through all the updated old skins before you get to anything new. The chances of missing new skins entirely is high. I know

Galaxy Quest really sucked. To this day I don't know why anyone lists it amongst their favourites. I seem to remember I had a few Galactica figures mixed in with my Star Wars ones.
