I have the perfect solution, although it's probably too late for Brad. Don't have kids. Sure, the human race will die out, but it's a small price to pay. I've never liked kids, and I'm just glad I wasn't ever one...

I don't agree with the way things turned out, but I can certainly see why Mr Bart had to give in. It was a case of either giving in and ensuring that he gets credit for all the rips/ports, or do pretty much what I did when my metalX skin was being ripped and just end up with a bad reputation and a lot of uncredited rips. I'm really not happy with the disregard a large majority of NeoWin memebers seem to show for this community, and the only way I can see for this to be resolved neatly is for som

Just a quick update on the Mercury situation, care of digitaljames. William Bart has now (somewhat regretfully) given in and given his permission for ports of his Mercury skins to other platforms. For more info, check out this thread on NeoWin: http://www.neowin.net/bboard/showthread.php?s=&postid=194507#post194507

If what you're saying is true Jafo, then there's no hope for the skinning community. If only one person is allowed to make chrome skins, glass skins, plastic skins, etc. then things are very difficult. In my past experience with Copyright law, you're only infringing those laws if you directly copy or alter another person's work and then pass it off as your own. Saying that you're violating Copyright law by taking inspiration from other people's work basically means that every artist, musician an

Erm... You do realise that this is a message board and not a chat room, don't you cuevillas? Therefore, when you post a comment, don't expect a reply for a while. You will very rarely get a reply within a couple of minutes! Also, try to stay on the topic of the thread. If you have a question, it's best to start a new thread. The answer to your question, by the way, is that to use a file yo

Is it really true that popups generate more money than banners these days? Surely I'm not the only one who just closes a popup before it even has a chance to display the ad. Whereas with banner ads, at least I'm likely to at least glance at them. Popups truly are a pain. I'll certainly never resort to popups in my sites when there are so many other solutions to the advertising problem these days.

Hope you get well soon Brad. Kim's already contacted me, so my worries have been set aside. I find staying in the house and never going outside or having contact with other people helps to avoid illness.

I had noticed that thread over at NeoWin. It's pretty much the same thing that happened with my metalX skin - a bunch of arrogant kids who think they're clever by claiming copyright law doesn't apply to them. I used to respect the NeoWin site, but recent activity in the forums there has only convinced me that it's not the kind of place I'd like to hang around. It's people like those guys who really take away the fun of skinning. I'm probably not even going to release 8ball to t

What's happening with the GUI Olympics now? Things seem to have ground to a resounding halt. We're waiting for the 5 extra awards to be announced, and for winners to be contacted. The latter was supposed to happen in this past week. What's the news?

That was exactly my point. Surely you're only violating copyright if you're using the original work and including it in your own. If you're simply mimicking the look of the original, but in your own way, then surely it's just an homage to the original.

I saw that address, but I wasn't sure if it was actually his. It seems to be for a different company, perhaps the one that maintains the site? I'll give it a try anyway.

The difference here though is that I haven't used any of his graphics in my skin. I've drawn everything from scratch, and just used a similar chrome effect for everything. It's also pure shades of grey rather than the off-blue colour of the originals. It's really just a matter of being inspired by his work to create a similar feel for a WB skin - it's by no means a port of his skin. I would post a screenshot of my skin so you guys can see exactly what I mean, but I'd be concerned about

If you take a look at the page this came from, you'll see that it's actually done using a pretty call drawing applett which records brush strokes as an animation. So the actual animation side of it is all automated. There's no denying the incredible artistic ability of the artist though. Oh, that page: http://www.suteki.nu/oekaki/
