"isn't there a dice roll involved?" Yes, the manual says the actual attack/defense values used in a particular round of the fight are randomly chosen between 0 and the number assigned to the ship. I think this combat system is just fine. I only hope that the hitpoints are relatively high, compared to the attack/defense values, otherwise you will get a lot of "my tank died while attacking a spearman" type of whining... "If a ship is attacked, does the damage stay with i

I used to play bridge with my friends (face-to-face, of course, not thru computers) and that's quite fun, even though sometimes you have to wait for the others. I guess playing MP over LAN must be a similar experience. So I understand where Lovok is coming from. Small problem is, people who have a bunch of computer-game-loving local friends being able to spare 8-12 hours at a time to play a game seem to be in an utter minority. I am not one of them for sure. And playing a serious strate

"It appears that playing MOO3 "right out of the box" without reading the manual, readme files etc., will lead to a negative initial response" To me, it appears that playing MOO3 after reading the manual, readme files, etc, will also lead to a negative response (unless you are a die-hard MOO fan) because those documents are outdated, incorrect, and vague. I don't think that any review I've seen so far denied this. Most of them didn't care though. I decided not to by MOO3 after I read the

"there seems to be some missunderstanding" I re-read the thread and I don't think there is a lot of misunderstanding. They are mostly picking on the statement that the AI is good because it is multithreaded. I understand what Brad means by this but I too think that this is a silly thing to say. The AI doesn't get smarter because it is multithreaded, it just has more time to think. This sounds more like an argument: "The reason why GalCiv's AI players are so good is because they

I recently came across the idea of having a random tech tree (apparently it's not a new idea, I just haven't played Master of Orion). I believe it must improve replayability a lot. What's your opinion about it? I realize that it's not likely to get incorporated into GalCiv if it hasn't been planned for, so my question is more on a philosphical level. If there was a conscious decision not to have randomized research in GalCiv, then I would be especially interested to learn what the reaso

I am quite impressed by this model (even though it does sound "Elitist" :) ). I think it would be a good idea to add your explanation, along with a description of how the diplomacy is action and not conversation based, to the user guide. It would improve the perceived depth of the game.

Bonus pack released on the same day as the base game? To reward new buyers? This doesn't make sense to me, what am I missing? (If it's not a marketing secret... :) ) Will the Bonus Pack and Expansion Pack be free? If not, how much will it cost?

Ducky, it makes perfect sense what you are saying, I just feel that adding such a popup instead of smarting up the AI would be like admitting that the AI code is a complete mess. It would be better than nothing at all on the short run, but what would it say about the chances of future AI improvements?

"Stalin trusted Hitler." I suspect that my interpretation of the word "trust" is slightly different than yours. Anyway, I made a mental note that the Russan-German relations in May 1941 is good example of a "close" relationship and I will handle the AI accordingly... :) :) :)

"when a planet revolts and join another empire, all ships are launched and if a transport/combat transport (CT) is available then population gets duplicated on planet and 1/2 loaded into it" This sounds like a neat feature (except population shouldn't double, and the amount of "loyal" citizens should be random, not exactly 1/2 every time).

My goal is not to make sure that I will be able to beat the crap out of the AI, rather to make sure that the AI is indeed better than usual. So I don't expect a free popup at all. I would like some proof that the AI is reasonable, and I think an event log like the debug.err file would help a lot in this regard. I read somewhere else that you plan to improve the AI based on games submitted to Metaverse, so assume something like that log is already there, it's just a question of dumping i

"The Altarians probably gave them an inducement." I would be curious to know what it was. In another thread you mentioned that there is a debug.err that shows the AI-AI transactions. Will this be part of the release version? It would improve my confidence in the AI a lot if I knew for sure that it doesn't sell me out for peanuts. :) What would be also cool if in such a situation the relationship would get colder and colder gradually, and perhaps the player was notified about th

"Somebody tell that to Belgium, France and Germany" Well, OK guys, you don't need to mimic reality *that* closely! :) But if a 'close' rating, which, judging by the slider position, is probably the second best you can have, doesn't prevent the AI from allying with your enemies, then I have to wonder what that Relations slider is good for at all.
