Yep, I have the same problem. That's one of the reasons I've just taken to running Winamp in the background instead of using the MP3 player in the game. Usually Winamp's volume (if cranked all the way up) is enough to completely drown out the game's music so it works pretty well. I'm still hoping they can "fix" or change this, though. ~SDC~

"Where the leave button should be, it says "no string found". Yep, same thing here. Though the button still *does* work as others have mentioned and lets me leave the diplomacy screen. I didn't actually test the sliders and update-on-the-fly as I just wanted to check the update really quick. ~SDC~

Seriously, Brad, don't let the few loud complainers get you down on the majority of us. I think most of us LOVE and HIGHLY APPRECIATE the amazingly frequent updates you give us through SDC and would very much like them to continue as often as you feel able to support. Obviously there are a few kinks here and there with SDC and there's a bit of a learning curve (which people ought to be able to get around by reading through the Sticky FAQs on this forum, I'd think), but once you get the hang of

Cool, just tried the update. Some very nice stuff, but a couple things I noticed. 1) When you turn on Auto-Launch Ships on one planet, it turns it on for every planet in that system (and vice versa). If possible, it would be much better to have each planet settable. 2) I was hoping the Disable Event Music bug fix might make it so that Event Music (ie, speaking to another race in Diplomacy screen, another race introducing themselves, elections, and other things with their own

I agree with all the praise as well and I urge you not to take things too personally, Brad. I think most of us understand that you don't owe us your presence here by any means. I'm incredibly impressed at how much you post here and how many questions you answer. And I'm even more impressed at the sheer number of updates you've already released to this great game. You guys weren't kidding when you said we'd get a *full* year of free updates to the game. :) ~SDC~

Nothing necessarily bad, I don't think. Mostly I just didn't want to try as: A) I didn't think they'd be very likely to agree to another tribute while still paying me on the first one B) I didn't want to overtax a friendly race's economy by asking him to pay me more than I thought he could handle. I always look at how much they have in the bank before I ask for an amount so I have a good idea that they can easily afford to pay what I ask for. ~SDC~

I posted this in its own thread, but I'm going to put it here as well: I just wanted to throw out a suggestion that it would be cool if somewhere (on the Domestic policy screen, somewhere, perhaps) we could find a detailed breakdown of exactly how much Tribute we're receiving from each alien race, in addition to the total amount per turn. Something like: Drengin 10bc/turn - 20/50 turns Altarian 50bc/turn - 5/15 turns Those latter numbers would tell you "what tu

"#99 by Citizen cpbeller - 3/31/2003 12:29:02 PM i think i got the update...finally....it downloaded a file that was 1.03MB....but, the exe file still says 1.0.0.1 Is it supposed to say something else" From what I've read elsewhere, when you click on the GalCive .exe and look at properties, it is *not* going to show your actual version number but only that version....for whatever reason, I don't remember. To see your real version, you should look in your registr

BTW, on the sound issue. I have a Soundblaster Live! Value soundcard and the game works perfectly for me....no massive crashing. The only thing is that some of the music tracks have some distortion/static in them (mainly the Senate Election and the Drengin music, that I've noticed) and when I try to play MP3s a lot of them are distorted. Still, I don't think the SB Live, by itself, is necessarily a problem....at least if you have the latest drivers and DirectX 9 ~SDC~

The anti-piracy part of using SDC for updates is that instead of punishing legitimate users with copy protection schemes (that sometimes won't even allow you to run the game), it rewards legitimate purchasers by giving them a huge stream of contstant "mini-updates" that you can only download from SDC. Now, eventually, a chunk of these "mini-updates" will be bundled together into a larger Update/Patch that will be available for download from the website. So eventually *all* users will g

"#5 by Avatar Frogboy - 3/31/2003 1:27:55 PM David - did you buy the retail version? When did you install Stardock Central? Just so we're clear: When you install Stardock Central, the installer checks to see if you have GalCiv installed. If it is installed, it adds some XML files to let Stardock central know that you already have GalCiv on there. IF you installed Stardock Central first and then installed GalCiv, then it doens't know. Hmm, hit submit too soon. I was going to say that I actually got a GNN message tonight (after getting the update) that one of the minor races had gotten a trade good and had a monopoly on it...I'd never seen that message before and am hoping it's a good sign that that problem is fixed. :) ~SDC~

Okay, I believe I figured out (thanks to a post by Brad in another thread) how to fix the problem with the new update wanting to download the 84 MB base game. It seems that you need to follow these steps, in this order: 1) Install Galactic Civilizations (this assumes you have either the CD or the independent .exe downloaded from the website, as that's the only way I've done it) 2) Install Stardock Central and register GalCiv (hopefully you know how to do this :) ). 3) N

Just wanted to chime in with a positive. I did a "Refresh Application Data" in SDC when I got home tonight and the 1.01a update showed up. I downloaded it and it came in at around 1 MB. No problems at all....I haven't run the game since, but I don't anticipate any problems. I also wanted to make sure Brad and the rest of Stardock know how awesome they are. I mean, this game has not even been out a week yet and already you guys have released an update to the game that fixes some bugs

Yeah, I noticed that most of my MP3s were playing back with some static and distortion. And I also found that if you're using the game's MP3 Player, your songs cut out whenver you get to a point in the game that plays "special" music; like alien diplomacy screens, for example. Then when you get back to the main screen where the standard background music would normally play, your song starts back up again where it left off. Kind of irritating, actually, to be grooving along to, say, Madonna an

Captain Chaos: If you play against "Intelligent" AI, the computer is playing at its most intelligent level (it gets to use all the AI scripts and such) and it's not getting any kind of production bonuses or penalties. Higher than "Intelligent," if I understand correctly, it's still playing at its most intelligent level *and* it's now getting some production bonuses on top of that. So if you want to play against the smartest computer that doesn't cheat, just play Intell

Use F9 key to bring up (and close down) the Tactical Map (which is what you want, I'm pretty sure) from anywhere. I mainly use this for when I've just built something on a planet and I want to know where that planet is located as I try to decide what to build next (In hostile territory...build more defense. In danger of being culturally overrun....building more morale, cultural resistance, and star influence...etc). One thing to note is that if you're on the Planet screen like this an

Also, if you open up the Planets screen for the planet that just built the colony ship (and you'll automatically be taken there at the beginning of the turn to decide if you want to change the ship type you're building), you'll see that little box in the bottom righthand corner that says "Ships In Orbit." That's where you'll see your colony ship (and if you hover your mouse cursor over the ship icon for a second, it should tell you what ship it is). Now, you can do what was said above or you
