My empire would have a much better showing if metaverse registered my scores :( The only one that took was one where I quit on the first turn.

Well, in the game that was 2 turns from a victory, after the reload it took at least 3 years for a victory. (Why didn't I just play them out? Because I'm a tester). It reset the clock because I was no longer over 90%. Not quite cosmetic, but not a total game killer, I guess.

Major Reload Bug in Galactic Civilizations I Stardock Forums

I have replicated this in every game so far. When reloading a game it effects the cultural ownership of sectors. I had saves that when I quit I was at 80% control and when I reloaded it was at 37%. I even tried it when I was on the countdown for victory. It looks almost like the cultural effects from starbases get wiped out on a reload.

I'm in a similar boat I see all of Drengin.net but no GalCiv. I was able to get the beta versions previously.
