Multiplayer fanboys all miss the key issue: Making a game multiplayer is not a simply a small technical problem, i.e. adding some network code. It is a fundamental design decision that impacts how the game plays at every level. Just one example is the concept of 'balance'. A multiplayer games is worthless without it while a single player game can almost ignore it completely. In it's place all sorts of unbalancing story/flavor or unique gameplay can be added. A

Two points we agree on: falsifyability is a key element of science. Science is not the only measure of 'truth'. I don't think that modern sociology offers many disprovable theories. Ideas yes, theories no. Some of them may be true, but it's impossible to establish which ones without faith. And well-founded faith can be a legitimate reason to believe. Science doesn't preclude faith it complements it. As to human sexes, I don't think it requires 'interpretation' to est

dystopic , Since you brought it up, I'll add: I would be very careful when considering most sociological 'theories' as explanations of reality, especially those related to post-structuralism and the like. In the end, I fear they will prove deeply unsatisfying The modern history of the "social sciences" is largely one of proving incapable of explaining *any* human behavior in a scientifically repeatable way. There is generally very little science--that is repea

Well, I appreciate your civility, but I will say this: Since were talking about a poll, which is by definition an attempt a statistical measurement, the statistics do matter. In a realm where two options make up 99.98% of the total, and the expected sample is a few hundred or even a couple thousand, there really are only two options. Attempting to add a third category is statistically indefensible. It's also counterproductive if your goal is acceptance for those truly in

I can't believe I'm feeding the troll, but: actually there are at least 5 biological sexes, and no limit to psychological genders. cannot be allowed to stand. This false belief has gained widspread acceptance since the publication of biologist Anne Fausto-Sterling's essay published in the early 90's: "The five sexes: Why male and female are not enough". This essay is also responsible for the myth that between 1-2% of babies are born "intersex". An a

mortibus, Betas are only available on SDC for a reason. They don't want beta to be used by their entire installed base, they are for a smaller number of hopefully tech-savvy users who are willing to put up with extra bugs and serve as testers. Restricting it to people who have already figured out how to download and use SDC on their own is one way to do that. Mr. Lucky

liveload, Your points about Stalin's USSR are well taken. However as GeneralBT noted, the points you brought out also parallel Revolutionary France. There was a massive Naval officer purge that crippled the other wise quite capable French Navy, for example. And there are many other supporting points that don't make sense for the USSR but are perfect fits for France. For example the eventual counter-revolution reestablishing order along the lines of the "Old" Republic. A

MarshallONeil , Thats funny, especially love the homeworld... liveload, Graysons as the USA: It took me a while to figure that one out but yeah, probably. Check it: Unshakeable ally of Manitcore/U.K., deeply religious/puritan, slighty backwards but coming on really, really strong industrially. Sounds like a match. The home run, so to speak, is that they play baseball, something none of the other nations do. I think that's Weber pointing us to the

I also love the Honor Harrington stories. Most of the Honorverse stories are loosely based on 19th century history or at least the basic geo-political situation as it then was. Even the post-Diaspora year count comes out to late 1800's early 1900's. Maniticore is clearly the U.K. and the 'peeps' are France. A small commercially powerful nation against a large but disorganized foe. The slam dunk clue is Rob S Pierre. (Robespierre) and his reign of terr or and Committee for Public

One key point that hasn't been mentioned is that taking a TBS game MP is not as simple as bolting on a communications layer and making sure it doesn't get laggy or drop. If a game is to be MP every playable faction has to be EXACTLY balanced. Every MP game has huge fan debates about how one faction/character class MUST BE NERFED OMG!!!! If GC2 was MP, far too many of Stardocks resources would have been devoted to the task of balancing to h

Sorry if I'm threadjacking for this long shot, but could anyone help me understand why I can't download the latest beta? I've tried clearing my cache and uninstalling SDC but every attempt at downloading fails with the following messages in the log: Download: C:\sd\Base\Gfx\Terrain\Desert_Query.png_ 0 (skipped) | 23497 | 10/21/2005 17:00 Download: C:\sd\Base\Gfx\Terrain\Mountain_Query.png_ 0 (skipped) | 28520 | 10/21/2005 17:00 Do

Well, it still happens with the latest and greatest version of beta3. Whenever it gets to Earth.png it tries to use a clearly bogus directory structure, i.e. "...\Gfx\ s\planets\Earth.png" That's 8 spaces between Gfx\ and s\, by the way. The exact messages from the log can be seen in the post above. As mentioned above, I tried different servers, clearing the cache, different download directories and complete uninstall/rei

Thanks for the tip. Tried it, but no joy. Turns I had actually tried it before posting--apparently on of the latest SDC versions moved the temp download directory out of the "Documents and Settings" tree and into the SDC installation directory tree. In any event I tried moving the temp doownload directory to various other even simpler trees and none of them worked. A snippet from the latest log follows. Thanks again

Just like it says, I haven't got SDC to work since Beta1. Every download attempt errors out trying to get Earth.png. I've tried different servers, clearing the cache and uninstalling/reinstalling SDC. I don't think my system is hosed I think the script is wrong, but I'm open to suggestions. Relevent snippet of the log follows. My guess is that "Gfx\ s\planets" is supposed to be "Gfx\ InfoIcons\planets", but that's just a guess.

Well, clearly no one else cares, but I'll continue talking into the void: SDC downloads continue to not work. The first beta downloaded successfully, since then nothing. Beta2, Beta3, changing the download server, clearing the cache--zero,zip,zilch. The error remains the same and it is 100% repeatable, installation log follows: Download: C:\Communications\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Gfx\Race\RaceLogo55.png_ 1 | 02/20/2006 14:1

Well, the SDC download has changed, but it is still erroring out with the same error. It now downloads quite a bit, proceeds to the 71% point and stops with the following messages in the log. It still seems to me that " s" ought to be "InfoIcons". Anyone else get this or care to comment: Mr. Lucky Download: C:\DOCUME~1\Josh\LOCALS~1\Temp\sdcentral\Base\Gfx\ s\planets\Earth.png_ 0 | Attempt 1 | -14 The Url is inva

Sorry for the bump spam but am I the only one who hasn't got the beta2 from SDC? Every time I try and download it, it errors out at the same file with the same error message mentioned in the original post. I have to assume that this is repeatable for anyone as it's not a serial number issue or a machine config issue, the install script is hosed. Anybody with experience as to how SDC updates work care to comment? Mr. Lucky

I''m trying to download the beta2 from SDCentral but I keep getting the following error according to the log: Download: C:\DOCUME~1\Josh\LOCALS~1\Temp\sdcentral\Base\Gfx\ s\planets\Earth.png_ 0 | Attempt 1 | -14 The Url is invalid It appears to me that the directory between "Gfx" and "planets" should be "Infoicons" but is instead " s". Any thoughts? Mr. Lucky

As everyone says, a most excellent list. Many thanks for your fine support . One question, does: + ECONONOMIC ENGINE CLEANED UP! How much of their capacity is used is based on the domestic policy sliders (spend rate X what % on each of the 3 sliders is used). mean that the research/labs domestic policy slider is d

I agree that it’s probably not going to change. These are the rules for which the game is balanced and it’s likely too much effort to change it now. The game is fun, the new patch sounds great and I’ll keep on playing. It’s worth noting that the GCI economic ; the clear parent of the GCII ; did allow for ‘full’ funding of manufacturing and research. There were only industrial points and if you set your research to 50% you got the
