Space_dust I've only played a couple games and against simpler A.I so maybe you're right but in my limited experience propaganda is cheap and effective. In early-mid game I'm spending less then 10 per planet and changing my morale from mid 30's to mid 50's, this is with all morale boosting projects I've researched already built. Propaganda allows me to boost my tax rate and easily make back the money I'm spending on it plus extra.

Welcome to the wonderful world of supply-side economics, my friend. :D Cut Taxes!!! Watch citizens who take home more pay work more to earn more!!! Watch productivity soar!!! Watch total tax receipts rise even though the taxation rate is lower!!! Hey, it worked for Reagan, it can work for you.

jlrogers, Yeah, I thought about the historical angle too, and if the other ships had names like Ship-of-the-Line and Galleon a very powerful Frigate class would make more sense. But they're clearly using a more modern nomenclature with Battle Cruiser, Battleship and Dreadnaught as examples. A Frigate in that context is a less capable ship then a Light Cruiser, let alone something tagged a Battle Cruiser. But again it's kind of a nitpick really, this isn't a hardcore wargame, and it's ea

Cool beans. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Sounds like I can follow traditional download-the-patch procedure to get the BonusPak and use SDCentral for future updates after the QA process is complete and the dust settles. By the way, if that organ harvesting you mentioned is successful, could I get a bit of liver? Mines about full up of whisky and could use all the help it can get. LOL Can I also just second Axxon's post that this is the most customer friendly game site and co

My sitrep: I intend to get the game from EB either tonight or tomorrow after work and follow up by downloading the BonusPak through SDC. Has anybody followed this procedure and are there any 'gotchas' or unintuitive steps that they'd like to share? There seem to have been many issues with downloading through SDC, but they also *seem* to have been resolved. Is this the case? If I let SDC auto-update to whatever it thinks is the right version and then attempt to download the BonusPak, am I

I believe that each choice 'pushes' your civ off neutral(50) towards evil(0) or good(100). Some techs are only available if you are above or below a certain number, say 30 for evil. So flipping back and forth would put you no closer to either extreme and it's available techs, although there may be other non-tech advantages to staying down the middle I'm not sure. ~SDC~

Nitpicky I'm sure, but shouldn't they be reversed? A frigate is by definition smaller/lighter then a cruiser but it's exactly the opposite in the game. Also, is this the kind of thing that is easily modified in a text file somewhere? JPS ~SDC~

Matthew, Sorry to be a pest but I've got a follow-up question. Can you walk me thru the calc's using a base Frigate(45,5,4) attacking a base Battle Axe(40,2,5)? My understanding is that the Frigate will attack with 5 vs the Battle Axe 5 followed by the the Battle Axe attacking with 4(2+5/2) vs the Frigate 4. My stat backround is shallow as well as rusty but is the 5 point hit point advantage, plus the advantage of attacking first, enough to push it to an 85% chance for the attacker? Or

Is the concept that a ship with a higher defence then attack gets half it's defence added to it's attack if it is defending still in the game? If so, is it in the simulator? Didn't seem like it but I'm not sure. Great tool regardless, nice work and thanks.

sebadoah, I can't agree with your assertion that the tbs genre is behind other genres and has to get up to current standards. It's akin to saying that since we've invented photography we don't need people to paint landscapes using oil on canvas. Like photography vs. painting the different gaming genres have similar but also vastly different goals. Action 'simulators' like Freelancer(boo!) or Splinter Cell(yay!) depend heavily on graphics, they really couldn't exist without them. Having s

Sebadoh, you make some valid points, and your opinion that a sprite based game in '03 is disappointing is one I won't argue with, but one I do disagree with. For example I felt much more 'immersed' in Baldurs Gate II then Neverwinter Nights in part because of the sprite based graphics. My experience has been that with 2D the graphics can be artistic or even photo-realisitic, while in 3D it always looks like to me like textures painted on polygons. I love 3D for action games obviously, but for

Thanks again everyone, especially Lucky Jack for the more 'final' answers. Hope I didn't sound critical with my 'muddled' comment, frankly I'm happy with any scraps of info tossed my way. ;) With reference to David's comments about 3 production focused SB's really gettin it done in a main sector: do you all find it best to build single-purpose SB's or is some diversification wise? That is, do you add defense modules to all your SB's to keep them from getting sucker punched? Trade and product

thanks for the comments guys, although the answer still seems a little muddled. ;) could anyone comment on whether or not it's even practical from an available resources standpoint to build and enhance more then one starbase focused on the same modules in a given sector? ~SDC~

long-time lurker, first time poster. This game has me very excited, it looks like the tbs game I've been looking for for some time. I've got a couple starbase questions, forgive me if they've been addressed elsewhere. Do defensive bonuses that apply to 'ships in the sector' apply to the starbase itself, another SB in the sector, a Terror Star? (don't think so, but curious) Are starbase bonuses cumulative, i.e. two SB's with trade enhancing modules = double the bonus? (also don't think so
