Frogboy: Actually, Mass Drivers IV may be a shorter path to 4 attack on a small hull. I really hope the game becomes stable enough soon that I can explore the tech tree, my own meanderings through it have obviously missed a few things. CrispyMouse: True, the enemy has the choice of engaging. Doesn't affect the topic at hand, however. Second, speed isn't the advantage you think it is. The ability to ALTER your velocity/vector is a big advantage because you can determine

Would it be possible on the Military Govenor window to have a count of how many colonies are producing each type of ship? Also, could we get rid of ship designs in the left half of the window that noone is making, since we can't change that anyway? Bonus points if we get both

BTW, Shogun, thanks for that tip. I place named Rally points on starbases when they're founded, but for some reason, I never thought of renaming the starbase itself. I now also rename planets that have major bonuses/penalties due to colonization events. Trying to remember which planet has a +50% to starship quality is a pain

Oops, forgot one. 5) survey ship constantly dropping out of auto-survey because there are no more anomolies. Except, of course, for the fact that there are more, and in one case, it insisted that there were no more even though there were two more within the sensor range of the survey ship itself, so they had a first hand view that the anomolies were in fact still there.

Latest batch of notes: 1) I sometimes get one or more popups telling me that the destination is out of range "it isn't" and then the ship moves anyway after I've researched all the life support techs. I don't think the ships in question were using any of the higher levels of life support, as I think one of them was my original survey ship. 2) If you click on a stack of two unfleeted ships, then right click to move the selected sh

First of all, the newest engine isn't always the best for all circumstances. There should certainly be times when it is the best, and there's already times when it isn't the best. For example, once you get Ion drive, there's no time you'd use any of the earlier engines, since they're all larger and/or more expensive. However, when you get Impulse Drive I, it's more expensive and larger, so unless you need the extra speed, you're often better of goin

The ratio itself isn't the only important part. HP count as well. Basically, you're looking for the path that reduces the amount of effective offensive fire you're facing the fastest. Examples: If you've got tons of one type of defense, little of the others, and there's only one enemy ship that bypasses most of your big defense, you're probably best off taking it out first. Or at least later in the game, when the difference between the r

Should have seen it before they accidentally nerfed Scanner V and Scanner VI modules. I revealed an entire medium map with a single ship one time Or I think it was a medium map, might have been a small, it was the largest map available at the time, but that was back in beta 2 I think.

You'll only find them on PQ11 and higher planets. The teraforming tech line doesn't help any planet PQ 10 or less at this time, though it sounds like the tech line is getting its effect seriously altered very soon. Also, the Orbital Teraformer lets you teraform for free, it does not act like the GC1 Teraformer where it improved all the planets in your empire automatically. It's also a little buggy in my opinion, in that when you complete i

greywar, in GC1 I've managed to have a tax rate of 0% while having 100% funding in effect. Haven't pulled that off since they changed starbases, however. One thing that helps is to rush for the improved government types early on. Yes, "Interstellar Republic" increases your maximum cost because it increases your ability to spend money, but it increases your income by the same amount. Plus, the fact that the fixed expenses don't change mean

Depends, Shogun. You're probably going to collect more taxes off the 5 PQ 5 planets, unless you dedicate most of that PQ 26 planet to econ and morale improvements. It's easy to keep the maximum population of a PQ5 planet happy. Move all that population onto a PQ 26 planet, and there will be lots of unhappy people. I think the algorithm for population morale factors needs to be adjusted, it just gets insane when you start getting over 10M

Sometimes you will get a weapon that does more damage in the same series (Harpoon IV, Mass Driver IV, etc). For the most part though, the differences in the weapons are size and cost. So weapon X will usually be smaller and/or cheaper than weapon X-1. Now, since the size is computed as a fixed size+a percentage of the base hull size, there are times you will see two components with identical stats on the smaller hull sizes, but there's usually a dif

The AI is a work in progress. Beta 4 is the first time the AI was making a serious attempt to play the game, so there's definitely some things that need tuning. The AI probably gives up too easily, but I don't think the AI should fight it out to the bitter end. First, by surrendering to another race, that player is improving the other players position, most of the time. Second, we've all played games where we knew we had won long before the game wa

Actually, once the product is released, there probably will be an installer for those that bought GC2 rather than getting it through total gaming. That's the way it worked for GC1. It had an installer, though I never used it. As for installing it on another computer and not wanting to go through all the downloading again, you can do that. SDC has an archive feature which creates an image of the installed game, which you can then use to in

Supreme Shogun: This isn't a D&D game where you declare your alignment and then you're rewarded for following your alignment. Your choices on those events are what defines you as good/evil. Making events where good is rewarded and evil is punished would seriously break that. As I said above, the benefit of evil is the bonus you get for making the event choice that gives the bonus. So, if you give a choice where the reward is for the "good" choice, evil will choose it, as it has no

Minor nits: Without Basic Logistics, your logistics is 3 in Beta 4C. So add time to research Basic Logistics to that. It also takes some research to fit an attack of 4 in a small hull. Missiles are the shortest path, and even then I think you're talking Stinger IIIs before you can fit two in a small hull. You're still not going to get any engines, sensors, or life support in there. By the time you've accomplished the research

Just had an odd thought. The AI has shown little or no interest in preserving PQ while invading (I had a PQ 7 colony get blown down to PQ3 in a single invasion, at that point, why bother retaking it?). With that attitude, and the fact that noone takes prisoners in this game, you'd be an idiot to let an alien task force near your planet to begin with. If you're engaging the enemy close enough that you firing away from the planet might damage the plan

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough, that is exactly what I meant by "space available for modules." I was lumping weapons and defenses (and engines too) into modules, even though "modules" is just one tab. Should have said "space available for components." which also includes the fact that some components vary in size based on the hull they're put in. I meant that if a medium ship with 4 attack and 4 defense meets a tiny ship that manages to have the same

I've been thinking about this, and there's a few things that I don't see on the list that I think should be there. 1) penalty for you having a military force/starbase in/very close to their territory. Maybe only computed at construction time for starbases. While I'm sure the AI will take that into consideration in deciding its actions, I think it should color relations as well. 2) same for cultural starbases. 3) Pena

BoogieBac: If you're not careful with your black-hole gun near a planet, I dont' think being in a fleet or not is going to matter Question (the descriptions don't make it clear, it is relevant to this discussion, and I suspect the answer may depend on the type of installation in question): Do these improvements allow you to defend the planet with a fleet of all the orbiting ships, or

The problem is that evil, for purposes of this game, is a mattter of always going for the best benefit, as opposed to good, who will pass on a benefit if it is opposed to their belief system. In other words, in the scope of this game, if an event came up where the benefit was attached to the "good" choice, evil would have no reason not to pick it, since they base their choices on the benefit. Good would also have no reason not to pick it, since it fits with their belief system.

Shogun, the hull size doesn't matter except for its stats and logistics requirements. Hull size determines the base number of hit points, the base amount of space available for modules, and the number of logistics points a ship costs to add it to a fleet. There's also a cost for each hull size, but that doesn't affect combat once the ship is built.

7) It would be nice for a survey vessel on a long trip back to be able to do more than contact new races, so I'm all in favor of adding the ability to hit anomalies on the way back 10) I don't see what the problem with the ship design screen is. It's easy to put the parts I want where I want them. Might make it a little easier by making the parts "snap to nearest mount point" within a
