user-friendly: One trick I've learned that helps keep that from happening, and also helps keep the victim from destroying your gift before the antagonist can do his job is to surround the starbase and the gift(s) with a square wall of constructors. It takes 12 to build a wall that encloses 4 spaces, which is enough for the target starbase, a gift starbase, and misc gifts, including room for shifting around. In fact, if the gift is AM missiles, you can send more AMMs in over the constructor wa

T-Man: interesting enough that Fearless Leader (my nickname for anyone stuck with me as a subordinate) is the only evil player on the White Council according to the smileys :) I'm sure we can all fill in the blanks from our paranoid sense of humor on what that means.

Staffa: The 1.04 AI is most certainly capable of researching Final Frontier. The Torians have it in my current game, and I'm trying to decide if buying it off of them would be too cheesy of a win, or should I just research it myself (almost there).

Are you sure they're loosing HP, or are they just showing the damaged effect? If the latter, then it's probably that you've developed a tech/trade good that increased HP, and they're all "repairing" themselves to the new, increased level of HP.

My score got recalced, and apparently the new system doesn't think I'm cheesing as much as I thought it would, as my score only dropped by about 30%, rocketing me up to position #29 (haven't been in the 20's since there were only 138 players registered on the Metaverse). Then again, I've been upgrading as soon as new versions are available, so almost half of my games were already 1.04. Anyway, now all of a sudden I'm feeling the urge to play much GalCiv this weekend to try to push my way into

Morden, I don't think he's talking about submitting the same game several times to get it to count as multiple games, as the multiverse won't allow that. It will only count a game one time. Actually, there might be a loophole there, but I won't say any more about it until I've tested it and, if it works, reported it to StarDock. He may be talking about finishing the same game several times and only submitting the best score, but if he wants to spend a lot of time optimizing his score

You know, every time I get a terror star near someone's last few systems, even if I'm "Close" with them, they surround the system with every ship they've got. You'd think they didn't trust me :)

True. A quake in the mid-5 range might break some china if it's not stored well, 7s are nasty, but not catastrophic in a city with earthquakes in mind (L.A., San Francisco). An 8, on the other hand, is quite deadly even in cities that laugh off 7.0s. Not linear at all. Wasn't the quake that flattened I-80 (?) in San Francisco a 7.6? Or am I confusing it with the last big one in L.A?

Currently, on versions 1.02 or less, there's no upkeep, and on versions 1.03 and 1.04, there's a 5BC/turn maintenance fee, regardless of how developed the starbase is, to the best of my knowledge.

Yes, if you can manage to win an alliance victory with all 5 AIs still in the game, that's a victory very much worth winning. Or do you consider politics to be the last refuge of the unsuccessful warmonger? Think it's the easy way out? Try it.

There are other things that influence the senate other than just the approval rating. Being too far behind on your military score causes the war party to gain in strength, etc. Or maybe they just use that for how they distribute those that the party looses. I have noticed that when you loose senators, they usually go wherever you're weakest.

Don't take this as criticism, just constructive comments: As a Huge/Gigantic map player, I think the perseverence bonus is going the wrong direction. Map size should affect the way the other parts are scored (what a fast victory is counted as, how many planets count as a good starting position, etc), it shouldn't be a bonus in and of itself. Or, as an alternative, the starting position could be based on the ratio of your points to all the AI points combined, and you could get rid of t

Jay Thomas: I haven't tested it, but I have a theory on this. Let's say you have a +20% military production bonus, but no social bonus (not common, but possible). You have a small empire that you can fund to 100% social production with 100BC/turn (with military/research at 0%). However, since your military production is higher, it would cost 120BC/turn to fund it to 100%. I'm thinking that research either has a higher capacity, or is more expensive (less free?) somehow, whic
