What about reversing the process? Rather than choosing a governor to define what type of town you want to have, what about having the type of town you develop choosing the governor? In other words, small, initial settlements start without governors (or highly bland and generic ones). As you build structures and train units in the city, those choices determine the likelihood of a specific sort of governor emerging in the city when it reaches a certain size. Build barracks and train man
(remember, this proposal is just for "blind research" to be an _option_, not mandatory, not even defaulted to "on") Sounds cool as an option, and I would probably play some games with it on. My gut instinct is that research should be specific, not generic. I understand the arguments people are making about real research being very much in-the-dark but I don't think it works in the context of a strategy games. Strategy games, more than any other genre, live and die by the quality of the choices they present to the player. A strategy game that gives me interesting decisions to make is a good game; one that doesn't, isn't. An FPS might get away with wowing you with a beautif

First, regarding the concept of campaign continuity in general, I think it's a very good idea. I also think, given that Elemental appears to be based on the idea that you, the player, represent a single, persistent character in the world, that it will be absolutely essential never to take away learned spells or technology between missions. How can I, as a single ruler/character, suddenly forget what I just spent weeks learning? I know people who gave up on the GalCiv campaigns for exactly thi

Pre-ordered and paying attention but whether or not the latter will last is highly uncertain. My attention span and available time isn't what it used to be. Still, I'm going to try to stick around, because I think a Stardock game is worth supporting from the ground up. - Ash

Here's a second concern, relating to the more fundamental point of allowing players to design their own units (and I'm quoting from a post on another forum ):
now we are going to have 100 different types of ... wait for it ... swordsmen! Addressing what I can, ignoring what I can't:
One question I can think of: Are beam weapons superior to "guns" and missiles? I ask b/c I usually do beams but tried missiles and was surprised how costly they were for minimal (it felt) damage .... ?
None are innately superior to the others. Mass drivers are the cheapest and do the least damage. Missiles are the most expensive and do the most damage. Beam weapons are between the two. So the manual tells me, at

I noticed this for the first time in my most recent game - playing a Custom race in a Medium galaxy on Painful. Fortunately, the game was almost over when it started happening, so it didn't affect the outcome, but it is nevertheless potentially a very serious issue. FWIW, I don't think it affected all of the techs at once. Some things seemed suddenly very expensive but there were still others that I could research in 1-2 turns. I think I would share the opinion of others

Primarily, although not exclusively, they want two things: 1) Low taxes. 2) Lots of space. That is, the higher your tax rate and the more people you have on a planet, the less happy the people are. After that come all the various morale-adjusting buildings/resources/starbases/technologies/trade goods. It's a good idea to keep in mind that farms - which increase the population ceiling on a planet - indirectly make people unhappier (because of that whole more-people-

I don't have a superfast connection but, as someone who has whined at you periodically in the past about getting really crappy speeds through SDC, I am very happy to report that ToA is currently DLing as fast as my connection will allow. Whether it was this update or a previous one that improved things for me, it's much appreciated. :) I can't really say it will make me more likely to buy software digitally, though, since I was already very willing to do so. - Ash

Add me to the list for "AI surrendering". Having to wipe out poorly defended asteroid after poorly defended asteroid when the AI is utterly unable to resist - all its major fleets and planets having been crushed or captured - is pointlessly and unentertainingly time consuming. I could probably play 50% more games of Sins if I didn't have to slog through the mop-up phase every time. - Ash

"Weapons Range" is effectively what most games would call "Hold Position" though we'd argue this is a subset of "Attack Range". Yeah, Craig already straightened me out about that, and I'm happy with the functionality as it is, then (pending more play, of course). That said, you might want to consider simply renaming Weapons Range to something like Guard Point

Hey Ash, Right click the attack button until you get auto attack range is set to 'weapons range'. Your ships will stand guard without moving. Thanks. Damn beta software doesn't even have a freakin' manual. - Ash PS> Oh, and I just lost my first fight. Can you make it so that doesn't happen again?
