When we didn't have the camera unattach from the object when you went to zoom, everyone complained that the camera was being pulled along. Thus, we exposed access to the "attached camera mode" and made it very easy to toggle between them during game play (button top left and the letter N on the keyboard). It is an interesting idea that perhaps the camera could stay attached when pointing at the object though I'm not sure how easy that would be to do if you were zoomed

I played my first game of Sins yesterday, and while it was generally enjoyable, there were a quite a few things I thought could use some improvement. I was using version 0.76[b].018. There were a few things during the game that struck me as blatantly wrong (I imagine some or all of these have been mentioned before, so my apologies for any duplication): - The "Zoom to Cursor" mode doesn't work well with the Follow camera. Whenever you have your view centered on a moving object,
Should this be used with a new game? When you click on the link to get the latest build, it says this: "Note: Using saved games from previous versions not recommended." So I'm going with "yes" on that question. - Ash
Gracias. I had no idea that button was there. And, even looking for it, it was so dark against the dark background that I almost didn't see it. Thanks. - Ash
You can conver some of them into Research or Military Production by clicking the icons at the top of the colony management screen for each area (it focuses your production on that world on one of the three areas at a time). Other than that, unused production capacity is just wasted. As far as the money issue goes, it doesn't get "converted" into cash, but the effect is the same: every point of production capacity, whether it's military, social, or research, costs 1bc/turn to actually
It doesn't have descriptions (and I have the same query about how one gets a "Wounded in Action" medal), but you can see a list of all the currently implemented medals here: http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=legend EDIT> And on that topic, why don't *my* medals show up beneath my posts? - Ash
A. Also, what does "4x" mean? I see it a lot when refering to these types of games. It refers to the basic type of gameplay that's at the core of the genre: eXplore eXpand eXploit eXterminate Those, in a nutshell, are the four phases of this kind of strategy game - and why it's called "4X". -
Disagree. Three points: (1) It's somewhat "realistic". Gradual refinements in technology are a fact of how such things are created. Granted, you can argue the degree to which the game should reflect that (2 Laser techs? 4? 5?). My point with this is just that jumping *too* quickly, however one might define "too", would lose the reality of the process. (2) the game offers a built-in way to customize this to your liking. It's not necessary to remove techs from the tree itself
If ypu built a transport and filled it with 10 soldiers would the AI still destroy its buildings? They'd probably settle for destroying the Transport. I doubt it would destroy its buildings if the transports of a friendly Civ were nearby (and, worse, on the high levels, the AI might decide that you parking transports next to its worlds was a precurs
Apologies if this has already been posted (it's a long thread ), but these two ideas, relating to the same screen should be very simple to do: when starting a new Metaverse game, the first thing you're asked to do is enter your Metaverse account info. It would be nice if this screen would do two things: 1) Have an option to remember the last account used, to save those of us who aren't sharing th
I'm curious to know why 1280X1024 was left out of the video resolutions. It definitely showed up just fine for me. 1280x1024 is my LCD's native resolution, and the game picked it up just fine. IIRC, it was the 3rd or 4th resolution option the game presented me with. - Ash
We'll need some time to get some PDFs up, but in the meentime here're some lo quality JPGs of the tech-tree (and I appolgize for the lossy-ness) page1: Link page2: Link The links currently yield a "this image removed due to high bandwidth usage" page. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Mad.gif" border=0 ALIG
Never mind. It's updated now... must just be some time lag in there for some reason. - Ash
What the OP said. Thanks guys. - Ash
Looking at my Empire (http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=empire&id=39), one player (myself) has completed a game, and scored some points. Yet the Empire totals still show 0 GP and 0 points. Is there something I don't understand about how Empire scoring works? Or is there a reason that my game/points don't seem to be carrying over to my Empire at this point? TIA. - Ash
I'll try to come up with a more organized/thorough list once I've played a few games, but based on the one very quick game that I played this afternoon, a few comments: Things that are Good: - Music. Really like it. That's very subjective, of course, but I enjoy the style you chose. - Graphics. It's definitely pretty. The 3D, especially with ship design, is very nice. - Interface. Very slick and easy to work with (other than the ship design window, as below). - The
First, I agree with your concern about Influence showing up. You really shouldn't be able to see any of a Civ's Influence until you've met that Civ, for precisely the reason you mentioned. Second, it's also possible to "drag" yourself around the map by holding down the mouse button and moving in the desired direction (including diagonals). So that might help you there. - Ash
Also won my first game, although even easier than yours. One on one against the Drengin (set to Foolish), Tiny Galaxy, other settings default. Roughly two years of game time, and they never even built a ship (compared to my ~5 colony ships, 4 attack ships, and 3 troop transports). Playing against the Humans and Drengin for my second game, with the Humans set to one level above Foolish. They, at least, are expanding slightly. Small galaxy, and there's one minor Civ around, which is add
Work. Stupid work. Although I did get in a game and a half (yes, very easy ones) before I had to come here... - Ash
Good post. You don't think anyone's actually going to listen to it, do you? - Ash
I have to say that I've had no problems with Stardock Central this time around. When GalCiv 1 came out, I thought it was a horrible PITA, and I felt pretty much the same as Tsathoggua. This is three years later, though, and it's been infinitely better for me. - Ash
I'll chip in my two cents that such a feature would be extremely nice, as well. And not a crappy one like Civ 4 has, but a decent one like Civ 3 (if I recall correctly) had. Then again, at this point I imagine it would take an extremely long time to create such a thing. - Ash
The problem is not critical, and is only an annoyance for us perfectionists. Losers. In any seriousness, I imagine it would annoy me too, but I haven't had enough time to design ships to notice yet (and I kind of rushed through my first game anyway). - Ash
Or you can move the map any way direction you like by clicking, holding, and dragging (LMB, I do believe, although I'm at work so I can't double-check that... one of the mouse buttons, at any rate ). - Ash
Thanks for the great support, it's been fantastic to see how much Brad has participated in threads at Octopus Overlords Indeed. I've said it there, but I'll say it here as well: thanks Brad (and everyone else at Stardock). - Ash
