I don't think there is any denying that race was a contributing factor in electing Obama; for some because of his race, for some in spiteof his race. What's missing in the discussion is the underlying theme now that he has been elected and for some was a subconcious force born of the desire to see a black president. That was the belief/feeling/hope that his election would somehow show that we, as a nation, had moved on from our racial past and were ready to embrace the color-b
I thank you pictoratus for posting this very informative article!!!!
Glad to contribute! An eye-opener, is it not?
Very good opinion on the role of racism in the election here: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-steele5-2008nov05,0,6553798.story There are many good points on just how relevant race was in this election and how little the outcome will actually change racism. Symbolism doesn't change racism one whit.
From the GUI Champs website Dec 8th : WindowBlinds Submission Deadline Is this no longer accurate? Given this: WindowBlinds Most Original & Most Usable WindowBlinds Submission Deadline: December 5th. Maybe the GUI Champs website hasn't been updated yet? Any word on corrected dates for all submission deadlines?
Some benevolent soul recognised my lunacy and donated me an almost brand new strait jacket that fits perfectly,
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that strait jacket is really a kimono .... and it's from the $150,000 wardrobe that was donated to charity by the RNC. Yep, Sarah Palin is your benefactor. ;) And Dude! (keeping with the frame of reference here) The major media over here were reporting the wardrobe at $150,000 not $200,000! Y
Last time I checked 'bitch' is not a taboo word no matter who/what it's applied to.
Might want to recheck that. ;)
In Dr. Guy's defense, Jafo, I took it that he was pointing out that the social acceptability of epithets is now defined by the objects of those epithets. You may not consider the word 'taboo' but I doubt women object any less vigorously to the B word than blacks do to the N word. The only truly acceptable use of the word bitc
But disliking that crafty nigger Powell is certainly something else.
Exactly my point. Show of hands. How many have heard the remark 'That dumb bitch' McCain or 'That dumb bitch' Obama? No one? Ok, how about this one. 'That dumb bitch' Hillary? My guess is there are a lot of hands in the air out there. To deny the fact of that particular slur being sex-based is to deny reality. To excuse sex o
Why are people being labelled 'misogynistic' when all they are saying is they don't like Palin?
"That dumb bitch Palin" Perhaps that is not sex-based prejudice to some, but I don't agree.
The prerequisite for discourse is civility. Get away from the personal stuff. Feeling strongly about your position is laudable. Acting responsibly and civilly towards others is the minimum, and less is not tolerable. Starkers has a right to voice his opinions the same way you do. Please respect others.
Unless, of course the the vitriol is directed towards either a person or a group who is not a member of WC, et al.
The sexist, misogynist, patriarchal ways of thinking and behaving that have been exhibited in this thread (and others) are atrocious and reflect very negatively on the members of this community (Wincustomize) and particularly on the individuals espousing such disgusting behavior in the name of 'political discourse'. The bigotry being shown here is astounding both in its unmitigated audacity and moral depravity.
Wee bit OT, but just to clarify....currently there are 3.3 million members of Stardock's sites, each of whom is obliged NOT to publicly use said sites to attack, defame or otherwise insult his/her FELLOW members.
Thanks for the clarification, Jafo While it may be seen as a 'Wee bit OT', essentially my statement
...you can be as nasty as you want with personal attacks towards anyone not a member of WC.
<
anyone who's a member of WC, in the context of not attacking people on WC directly in WC
Ah, I see .. anyone who is not a member of WC is fair game. By your measure you can be as nasty as you want with personal attacks towards anyone not a member of WC. I find your attitude not only distasteful but divisive.
Calm down , I wasn't attacking you , or anyone here.
I'm not excited, nor need to 'calm down'. I just happen to think the rules against personal attacks apply to everyone, not just 'anyone here'. BTW, does that 'anyone here' mean 'presently logged in', 'a current member', or 'someone on this particular thread'? If that's the way it's to be played, I can sling shit with the best of them. Easy enough to
The solution to all this is federal voter ID laws
You mean a system such as Artysim talked about? Elections Canada? Who
hockey mom bitch
I see the personal attacks are back ... and from WC'ers no less. *sigh* used to be rules against this sort of thing. Great job guys ;)
Capital doesn't simply disappear because it becomes tax revenues.
It does for the companies that pay the extra taxes. The CEOs seem to feel Obama's tax policy will negatively affect job creation among other things. And if businesses are able to keep their tax liability low in spite of rates going up, wouldn't that put a kink in Obama's plan? That is how he intends to pay for the increased spending he is proposing along with the ta
The CNN coverage of the debates, with the charts and the graphs and the viewer response lines? That crap needs to end. Have we really reached a point in our zeitgeist where people can't sit and watch two of the most powerful men in the whole world talk about decisions that will effect billions of dollars and people without video games cluttering the screen? Are we that gone on sugar and Ritalin and cocaine? By framing the debates in useless nonsense, CNN and their
I've got to agree that there is a lot of polarization out there Larry. And from that comes a sharpening wherein blacks become blacker and whites become whiter. No, I'm not talking about race but rather ideas as in seeing things as black or white with no areas of gray. Here's my point. Yes, Obama said he would agree to sit down with certain leaders 'without preconditions'. I don't believe that is actually what he meant. I feel confident he would refuse to meet under circumstanc
It makes sense. Obama's plan is to heavily tax those making over 250K. How many of those business's polled would you guess make over that 250K mark? With such a drastic reduction in capital, job creation/expansion will take a hit.
healthcare in the us sucks.
I see this fairly often. The truth is that the US has the best health care in the world. I believe you are confusing health care with health insurance And, as far as someone being incapable of racism because they are half black and half white? Anyone can be racist. The race of your parents has nothing to do with it. It is usually due to upbringing or societal pressures/leanings with
if Sarah Palin had had the good sense to use a more secure gov't email service instead of Yahoo Mail, the twit wouldn't have been so tempted to hack into it in the first place.
Hey, I've heard that defense before!
His response was that "these things are bad; they make you spend what you don’t have.
That in itself is telling. No reflection on your Dad but what that statement says to me is that, as a society we are saying we are powerless over our own destiny. And that is the problem. Too many people are willing and even eager to put the blame o
Sounds like some of the car dealers I've seen, although I would call it predatory selling (also known as the hard sell) more than predatory lending. And as DrG said, the Internet is the way to go. In the past people would go to the lots on days they were closed to get prices and VINs, determine the price they wanted to pay, financing etc. and walk in the next day with an offer. The Internet makes it even easier.
Because they were shoveling off the crap to others.
Exactly ;)
