The AI is pretty good at many aspects of the game, except one: Military strategy. To illustrate part of the problem let me summarize my latest game: All intelligent AI -- gigantic map -- tight clusters -- PQ 10%, military 10%, social 10%, diplomacy 10% (I think) The Yor managed to get at least twice as many planets as I do, they have three nice tightly clustered sectors of planets (almost like islands) while I have a long thread of sectors and another small clump off in the

It depends on your style of gameplay, however I find that PQ is almost too-powerful, as it influences so much about the game. I am also a fan of +econ and +military production (for constructors and early expansion). Just think about what kind of strategy you want to pursue and pick the traits that follow along those lines. If you are going to be a trading king, pick diplomacy, economics and maybe trade routes. If you are playing on a huge scattered map, pick range/spee

I have changed my tune a little bit on starbases. Coupled with my style of tech trading (I lease tech extremely aggressively) it makes even intelligent AI games pretty easy. The production bonuses of stacked bases make it pretty easy to outstrip the AI militarily, which makes them unwilling to go to war with you. This in turn makes it easy to culture bomb the AI as most of you know. There are two ways I think this could be dealt with. 1) The best approach, in my opinion is thr

Err "You can ask to get money from them while trading. on one turn it listed about 1300 in that window, in the next it listed 2200. " So the AI extorted 900 credits from a couple of other races? Or maybe they did what I do, trade all my techs asap, and then sell them to as many AI as I can. Also if there is a minor race around, they start with a ton of cash, and they are usually at a disadvantage diplomatically so it is easy to wring them for cash early on. Ho

I am not sure if this was supposed to happen or what, but the Drengin totally suprised me last night. I have never played another game where the AI sucessfully changed its strategy IN RESPONSE to me and actually did a good job of it. I did very well in the land grab, and I started selling good techs to the good civs and the minor races to raise cash to keep my %s high. The drengin were doing their typical bully routine on the other civs, but I was a bit to big to hassle with so

Also if you are doing well sometimes the AI will dump a lot of cash into destabilizing your government. I had my morale stuck around 45 one late game because I didn't have the capacity to produce the structures I needed to counter it. If you have espionage going you sometimes get an indication of who is paying to destabilize you. You can counter this with various improvements, and of course "bleeding" excess population off.

I really don't see the issue with starbases. You have to invest an enormous amount of time and production into fully upgrading several for each system. You also have to climb the right portions of the tech tree to get the right upgrades for your bases. You have to consider the resources as well, I have rarely gotten resources in the same sector as my planets, so you have to develop those starbases too. Meanwhile you aren't building military might and you aren't building social

I like being able to have starbases all over the map. They certain take a lot of production to upgrade them to where they are effective, and they are difficult to depend during times of war. Just planning on where you put starbases is a strategic endevour all to itself, considering the military, trade and influence bonuses you can procur.

Anxiety, ". I was really hoping for something a bit different, such as citizenry rebellions if you continued to make evil moral choices" This can happen in a BIG way if you go evil, certain random events are linked to your alignment. I nearly lost a game due to losing 1/5 of my planets right in the middle of a darned war.

As most of you know even if an enemy star has been covered by fog of war, you can still click on the star to see what ships are orbiting the planets. This makes is particularly easy to pick out weak planets and removes some potential strategic elements of the game (scouting etc). I was thinking you could either remove the ability to see ships in the fog of war OR alter espionage and have it increase the likelyhood of identifying the ships in orbit around an opponents star. The higher th

Any of you experts out there think PQ is a little too powerful? short to mid term it isn't as powerful as say 30% econ bonus, but long term, the huge populations you can support really crank out a lot of prod/tax/research.

When I have one of my ships targeted and it has movement points left, sometimes it wont let me click on another ship (especially an enemy ship) to see what it is. It forces me to use the rest of the ships movement points. This makes it hard to react sometimes to the AI,I usually check out the stats of enemy warships if I come across them patrolling around. Live to fight another day I say!

Granted I have only played a dozen or so games, but so far my gaming experience has been pretty similar every time (oh and I love the game!). 1) Mad rush to colonize 2) One or two AIs totally eclipse the other AIs, so much so the other AIs end up being mostly nonfactors the entire game. 3) The AIs who won the colony grab race to get big ships as quickly as possible. (I have seen races like the Altarian's branch out a little and get medical stuff, but it doesn't seem to slow the

Something that isn't intuitively obvious is how the mil/soc/research sliders impact your economy depending on what you are currently producing. For instance if every single one of your colonies is producing an overlord, and your military production slider is set to 100%, you will see serious cash flow problems. Whereas if your sliders are split evenly and you have half your colonies producing nothing you will notice a big difference in cash flow. Also notice if you cut down you

I like the idea of having each AI who reaches the final frontier lowering your score. That might be enough to balance the game without having to make major changes. That way only those who are aggressive and really control the game well will get high scores from a research victory. The devs probably need to add a warning that the AI is getting close to the final frontier however, so you can slow them down if you need to.

Against all intelligent AI players on a large tight clustered map I managed to win by reaching the final frontier. Now I was nowhere near the most powerful nation, the Altairians were massive and had researched the final frontier long before I managed too. Their cultural influence was so staggered huge planets of every other civ were revolting every other turn. Fortunately I had a nice set of planets in one corner of the galaxy and I had managed to stay out of wars long enough

I understand you need a close relationship to open up the option of being allied, however given my current game I don't see how I could possibly do anything more to help out the other civ and establish a close relationship. Long standing trade, no history of aggression between us. Massive gifts of tech and ships for years and years while they were being attacked. The only thing I can think of is that my alignment is neutral while theirs is good..

5 Replies 191 Views

Actually in one instance I did attack, I sent a nice flotilla of dreads out to take a system and lost most of them on the way to ships that flew out of nowhere and sniped at me. I think you have a good point about sensors in general, it must be that the Yor in this game have a sensor advantage because they know where my ships are starbases are at all times. My race is customized, and I don't have a sensor bonus either. The sensor drone idea is a good one, I just don't think they would h

I have a stack of 4 combat transports and 4 or 5 dreadnaughts. I ship them off a couple sectors away in a vain attempt to cripple the Yor's ability to send ships to harass my main system (meaning I want to reduce their ship range). On the way to the Yor's system, I get constantly attacked by random dreadnaughts out of nowhere (I wonder how they knew I was there?). The thing I don't understand is a single dreadnaught attack on my stack of ships ended up killing 2-3 ships at once, with one attack

4 Replies 213 Views

My most recent game I played it fairly neutral the whole time. The Drengin and Yor were crushing everyone, so I pumped the other races massive amounts of techs, and eventually dozens of ships, and I don't mean defenders, I mean dreadnaughts. I had as many trade routes with those races that I could. I never got above friendly with anyone of the people I supplied. Even though the Torians and Altarians ended up allying (after I gave them the tech) they never allied with me. I couldn't have
