If I'm not mistaken.... didn't Saruman get stripped of his color by Gandalf in the Two Towers book?

I think the blockade tactic got eliminated with the 1.04 patch. I've not attempted setting up a blockade, but I could've sworn I read somewhere that blockades were being removed. I could very well be wrong on this As mentioned above, those trade goods may not be as good for trading techs, but can still help you out if you want to "encourage" one empire to attack another. As stated above, I used this against the Torians because they were passing me militarily. I ended up employing th
Did you get the submit screen?
I'm used to cheating AI's personally (regardless if it really cheats here or not). I see a challenge, I try to find a way to overcome it (usually by turning the AI's against each other). The idea of turning AI's against each other is a HUGE factor in how I won my last game on 1.04, otherwise, I'd be having problems at some point with the Acreans, Torians or whoever else thought they had a good military. Even if they do cheat, they're not impossible to overcome SeanB
So much drama in this post, now i don't need to watch any TV all week
Yeah, I know... this drama apparently cost me the veteran ranking, although I've little idea on how you get the ranking, or in my case, what to do to get the veteran ranking back
I've had it happen where I got allied with the Torians even though I was the complete scum of the universe. What help here was a superior military, several trade routes, and some wheeling and dealing I've done with them. I'm not tried this with the Altarians yet although I suspect it *is* possible SeanB
I don't think the tech victory is pointless. I like the fact that its there, in case you get caught in a quagmire situation where neither you nor the AI are going to budge. As others have correctly pointed out, they become very easy to achieve relatively speaking. Granted with the advent of 1.04, its not nearly as easy to get the tech victory this time around. But it still has its purpose. SeanB
As to number 2, the spanners (spinning wrenches) not only will benefit your surveyor ship, but if you have any other ships stacked with that surveyor, I believe they benefit as well, unless that has changed recently.
If you have a way of linking or sending a saved game, I'd be curious to take a look at it...although the Stardock guys would be a better judge of what's going on then I am.
I'm playing on a painful game myself. Haven't decided to go back to crippling just yet. Painful gave me a little run for my money. I'm not venturing to say that I'm dominating that game, although its a safe bet that I'm holding my own and not threatened at the current moment. Right now its all I can do to stay near the 100 level on technology. Luckily enough I got 3 of the AI's at each other's throats with the 4th one in pathetic shape and the Yor collective dead. It's a bit more of a chal
You know what, I didn't even notice the score filter there. It looks like on the default view, its showing everyone's average score, but sorting by overall score. I see now. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't even notice that. EDIT-- Sort filters seem to work okay except for Huge maps. Still, this is going to make things much more intersting for comparisons and such. Then again, they might've wheeled and dealed some. I'm still wondering how on Earth the Acreans on my game somehow got to -2800 bc unless they were rush buying one expensive item or something. SeanB
I'm usually able to pawn off starfighters on the minor races all the way through the end game. I also found that I get quite a nice penny selling battle cruisers....so much so, I turned into an arms dealer of sorts for the minor races. Put me into good graces with all of them at way. Allows me to easilly get them on my side when I need them. SeanB
Did something just happen to the metaverse, because I'm seeing all kinds of weird numbers when I look at it, like I'm only at 986 cumulative, but in 24 place when I was in 30th or so a day ago with about a 4499 rating. The scores are all out of sequence or something odd like that. Anyone else seeing this? Anyone know what is happening? SeanB
I find that 70-0-30 ration on the spending sliders works fairly well, because this allows you to crank out colony ships while at the same time pushing research. I find that I usually gear my research toward Diplo translators and Grav Accel first, then rush to phasers to build offense, then tossup between rushing toward aphrodisiac or frictionless clothing. When you have your outerring of colonies complete, change your inner ring to constructors. Once you hit a technology that lets you
I actually find combat to be well developed, because alot of it has to do with placement of ships, your mix of ships (dreadnaughts, with support AMM and starfighters). By positioning your ships and planning ahead, you can use your offense specialist ships to great advantage. For example, you can place your corvettes outside the range of a cluster of starfighters, and then strike at your leisure. You can supplement starbases with battlehammers. You can use Starbases as a booster for your ship
My experience is that the computer will show you all the techs that you as the player do not have. So if you both have the exact same techs, then you would not see anything show up for the Altarians SeanB
Some things to keep in mind with Terror Stars. 1) You cannot attack regular ships with them. 2) You might want to beef it up with defense mondules. Otherwise, it'll be every bit as vulnerable as a normal starbase with no defense modules 3) Fortunately all is not bleak, by attacking the planet, any ships garrisoned on the planet will also be destroyed. 4) If you fortify a terrorstar with +cultural modules, the mere presence of it could tip planets into your empire
I figured out part of the disconnect. It may indeed cost 300 IP while the two technologies cost maybe 1500 IP and the computer values it as such. I had to take a step back and figure "why this disparity when Diplo Trans takes 100 turns while the Tech Queue takes only a total of 20". The one thing I figured was that you have all your planets working on the tech simultaneously, but only 1 planet doing the translators (hence the huge difference). I'm not sure if this is possible to do, but havi
I can shead light on the Phoenix. I know given the right military bonuses, a Phoenix can have some rather scarey ATT values. I've seen their values get well above 30 and some even greater than that. All that being said, a Phoenix can sometimes deal a great deal of hurt in battle. Edit here... when you get a Phoenix with an extremely high attack values, I've seen them exceed a Dreads defense value to a great degree. And that kind of advantage may be enough to overcome the hitpoint adv
The one benefit I noticed if I switched my military queues across the board to nothing (or for that matter switch my spending to nothing for military) is that I get a bit a speed boost out of the game on the larger maps. I've yet to figure out why this behaves as such, but it is something I noticed.
It's been my experience that the issues will come across more as "screw the human" if you chose to take the evil path in your games. I find that if I play a good empire, I dont see nearly the anti-human measures. As to decommisioning ships, I'm largely ambivalent to the issue. One thing I typically do if I want to get rid of them is deal them off to whoever I can and get a little bit of cash out of the deal.
Esidebob and buzu both have some pretty good ideas. I'd certainly buy off on it. *free bump*
I think the terrorstar phenom you mentioned is a known bug. I know that you can apparently boost a TS speed if you fool around with stacking ships on the TS or vice verse (seems to work most with survey ships or rangers) I admit that its unrealistic this way, and its a bug I dont exploit much since in alot of my games I can't afford to go building too many TS anyways. SeanB
I apparently became a benefector with the metaverse retooling because I went from 36 to I'm guessing 30 right now. I should be able to go up a few more ranks after my current game. I'm going to attempt a couple tiny maps here in the coming days and see how well I do
