Or they won't care because Steam works pretty well for them. There's a large group of people pretty happy to buy games on Steam, and even prefer it to retail (sure is a lot more convenient). For them, Steamworks doesn't matter in the slightest. So long as Steam is working when the game comes out, I don't think there will be much of a backlash at all.
You're mixing issues. Buying the game on Steam or being able

No, they won't notice. Mainly because 99.9% of people who will buy the game will have no idea or won't care because they don't know any better. Most don't hang out on forums like this and actually know what's going on. Most won't know that Steam is required. What will be interesting is to see if there is any backlash on the Steamworks requiremnet *after* launch. Because Civ is very much a single player franchise and there a many, many people that only buy Civ g

My general rule on pre-orders is I pretty much never do it other then Stardock games I want to get in on the beta for. Dragon Age was the first game I pre-orderd outside Stardock and frankly I didn't really need to do that. I was just too geeked up for the next Baulder's Gate (and I've played thru it twice so far). I also almost never buy games on release day...cost too much. I wait at least until they are on sale but most likely I wait for the Game of the Year editi
It is interesting to see comments from the Steam people claiming that if they go bankrupt or something similar they will release all the DRMs. As if they will have any kind of focus on that in an extreme situation. They might not even be allowed into their offices. It is also interesting to see people commenting that there is no way Valve/Steam will go belly up. May we remind ourselves of Enron or the more recent problems at BP?
</

Honestly I haven't like much of anything I've seen about Civ 5 and this enforces that.
[One of our] major goals with Civ V is that the game be accessible to more people than the previous Civ games. The best way to address that is by improving the interface and providing players with new tools for learning the game.
To me this means they are 1) Dumbing down the game to the least common demonator 2) Developing the game for consoles firs

Try 7 hours. DRM never stops pirates. Having said that I've said before I have no problem with DRM in the game. I hate DRM as much as the next guy but a disk check or even a one time online activation doesn't bother me. What

I personally have stopped bothering with the army game since there is no way I'll ever be top 10, I just can't do all the stuff the others are doing. So I've got some points and frankly that's all you need to be entered in for the random draws. So just one forum post is good enough for that.

I have the exact same graphical issues with total blur unless advanced lighting is turned off. Turn it off and I get the weird lighting distortion. The screenshots above are exactly what I see so I didn't include any. I also see the menu overlay issue when pulling up the save game menu. ATI 3870 with latest drivers. In Civ there was a small flashing message that said "Press Enter or click to end the turn" or something like that. It is a great indication that there are no more movement left. I'd like to see something like this in Elemental. Or maybe the end turn button glows or something. It's been a while but I don't remember what GalCiv 2 did to indicate it there were no more units to move and to click end of turn button. I personally don't like the auto-turn option

My plan, like I did with Fallout 3 is to wait for a "GOTY" edition that will include all the DLC's and expansions and whatnot and see if it then comes without Steam forced on you. If Steam still is then still no sale. I'm sure Steam will still be required because Steamworks is being built into the game. Like 2K is saying for Civ 5, there is no way to take Steamworks out of the game because the game is being built around it. Thus with Civ it will be the first time in 20

On the Digg thing, I dug some old stories that others did and points for mine were rejected while the others weren't. No big deal, just an FYI. Digg, Twitter and forum posts are about the only way I can earn points as I have no skills to do any of the other things like video's and whatnot.

I'm actually about ready to reinstall Morrowind and check out what new mods are out there for it. If TES V also goes the Steam route I will be really upset by it. All FO3 cared wast that it was just installed. I chose not to use any

You have got to be freaking kidding me. Game after game after game requiring Steamworks. So yet another high anticipated game that I will not buy. I'm about to just give up on all gaming at this rate. Seriously.

I had a similar feeling of "what the heck is this" but it really is marketing genius. I gets Elemental a lot more Diggs then it would have, spreads the word in Twitter and more. It really is a great idea and I'm surprised that nobody else has done anything similar before. I for one am checking daily now for new digg articles on the game and retweet what I can. Also it may spark me to get on the forums more. Good job!

I agree that Impulse needs to get DS1 and 2, maybe as a combo pack for $20 or something. I have my original DS1 install disks but it just won't play on Win XP, crashes. I loved DS1, tried the demo for DS2 and didn't like it as much so I never bought it. I look forward to seeing what they do with DS3. BUT I fear as others do that it will use Steamworks which will then make yet another game a no buy for me. Boy, Steam is saving me a ton of money lately by forcing

First off, pretty cool contest and a great way to get people to participate more. Now my question on forum posts, do you really want a quest submission for every single forum post? I'd think that will get a bit overwhelming to manually check. Or will you have a program in the background that will detect forum posts and automatically give credit for them? Thanks!

Stardock is well known for this with Gal Civ and especially GalCiv 2. They realease TONS of free new content (and did it long before "DLC" was thought of by the likes of EA and such) for a game. Not only as a thank you for buying the game but as an anti-piracy "DRM" so to speak. You make people want to buy the game by giving more and more cool and free content.
