Will do. Thanks.

OK, perhaps this is not the right forum to put this in (if anyone knows where to, please redirect me - no newsgroups please. Can't read them). When I start Stardock Central to check for updates, and then close it, it still runs in the background as 'not responding'. Seems to have started happening with the most recent update? Windows98SE directX 9 stardock: 1.20.238 (build 34). Any suggestion? Thanks, von Schmidt
Leases? (ie: rush buy)
yeah, my only steals where from the drengin as well...in the late game phase (I guess the espionage points reached a certain point). Spying is -alas- one of the underdeveloped aspects of the game (together with Alliances and the Senate). Hope Galciv2 will expand on those. Now MOO2 had a good cloak-and- dagger system! von Schmidt
I've never been able to extort money out of the AI - even when having a vast mil. superiority. Best way to go about that is to actually declare war ('giving' the declaration of war to another AI is good) and immediately offer peace. Against a price of course. Works most of the time, although last game the Drengin would not accept peace (which is fitting, seeing their nature). von Schmidt
Trading with your enemy is not a good idea: it gives them as much income as yourself from the trade route. Switch all your routes to the Carinoids, surround that system(s) with your ships to protect against the Drengin. Boost with trade SB's. Added advantage: with the extra income, the Carinoids will be better able to put up a fight. Before the Great Attack, have AMM's and constructors parked near the Drengins SB's (especially the Mil. ones). Destroy SB, reb
The reason the Fundies turned on you despite your neutral alignment is probably because their military rating is so much higher. Other AI's do that as well - they will turn on weaker civs like a shark smelling blood. Both on you and on other AIs. I don't know why the fundies had so much of a military lead compared to all the other tho. Did they take over the major planets of other civs? It *could* be that they (being a minor) are set to a fixed (avarage?) intelligence level
Quickest way to Battleship is to play as the Altarians, since they seem to get the tech waaaay before other civs... ;-) von Schmidt
As the german distributer is so bullshit i will only buy it if stardock makes it available for germans to buy it via download.
Well, I am pretty sure German credit cards are accepted by Stardock - so you'll be able to buy the expansion directly off them... von Schmidt
New minors seem to be gobbled up as soon as they appear. Which makes their appearance a bit superfluous. My suggestion: new minors get 2 of the most advanced ships their tech allows. For the Fundies and I-league (who both are an interesting concept and should be a force to be reckoned with in the game): - they get all ships in orbit of the systems they take over - per system, 4 of the most advanced ships the tech allows Any comments? von Schmidt
I never thought of that!As for your question. I've occasionally gotten threatening messages when I was doing a buildup. But I've never seen the AI actually do anything about it--it never recalled ships to reinforce, and it certainly never declared war unless I slipped up and left some ships in its sector. I don't think it ever even affected relations (though I could have missed that). So I guess in the end it doesn't matter whether it notices or not since it cannot respond effectively. [M
Interesting! What about ships? I finished building an Avatar and pummeled its races original creator with it to oblivion, that was fun! Unfortunately I couldn't build anymore since I didn't have the tech (I was still researching Dreds!) I feel that if you capture a planet and complete the construction of an advanced alien vessel you should get that tech or mabye a research bonus when you get around to it .
If you ask me, to close that loophole (including wonders/ capitol

Or does it increase the possible research amount, for which you then have to pay (like soc/mil prod)? And how do the research buildings work in that regard? Free or to be paid for research points? Yours wonderingly, von Schmidt
The Arceans definitely seem to be the best AI race in the early colonisation rush...(leaving aside the starting position). Luckily they are not too warlike; preferring to research trade stuff. The annoying thing about the Altarians and Torians is that they always seem to end up in an alliance. If you last into mid/endgame, you'd best view them as one civ. The most dangerous aspect of the Torians is their focus an research. And for some reason the Altarians seem to get
I posted more or less the same question, and the suggestion I received seems to work for me: have more habitable planets. I went from rare to common and my games last further into the tech tree now. Abundant is too much micro management in my book... von Schmidt
So one strategy is to sell them only what they're researching anyway, and if it's a tech that will take them several years to research, wait to sell it to them until they're almost done researching it anyway
So how would you know when the AI is *almost* done researching the tech? Apart from watching the status and reloading when the AI starts to research a new tech (which is cheesy).
Oops, in the situation above AI as not set to bright but to genius (?) (one step above intelligent). Still anoying that there is no popup - fine if they attack on their own turn, but I would like to be informed of the new state of war (short span of attention, I guess). Minor gripe in great game.
If the AI is at Hostile and feels further provoked (through relative lack of trade, military buildups in its sector, or simply having a military strength disparity), it will downgrade to "War" and immediately attack during its turn, i.e., while it is running the calculations. There will be no popup in this case. You will just see attacks start to occur. If, however, the AI is at Wary and downgrades, you will get a popup telling you either something needs to be done to restore positive relat
Thanks for the reactions. I guess it is normal behaviour for the AI - and I am not complaining; if I can do it, so should the AI. Re autopathing: it happened during the Drengin's turn, not mine. Playing 1.05 already. However, I am pretty sure there was no pop-up. I even reloaded the turn to check. Anyone else not get a pop-up? Oh well. Luckily, I was able to overpower the Drengin after quite a while. Lost a starbase in my home sector in the first turn though :-(<br
Last game I had the Drengin (on bright) attack a ship in my home system, without sending a pop-up message about declaring war, or trying to intimidate me into paying them off beforehand. Several Drengin warships were in my space in the preceding turns; although they had no good reason to be there (apart from attacking me of course), since I was in a corner. After the attack the relations screen showed us at war. I might have missed the new situation if I did not happen to obser
Thanks for the reactions. I'll try medium/abundant or large/common next - and try to survivive the micromanagement hell... It might be nice (for the expansion pack?) to have a choice for an 'advanced' start: everybody starts off with dreadnought and some other advanced techs; Altarians have the trade techs, Drengin mil techs etc.. I think MOO2 had a choice like that. von Schmidt
Hi all, I have got a bit of a silly question: my games tend to end (in my advantage, unless I give up beforehand in disgust with my incompentence) in the Battleship/Dread stage. Usually because I get reluctantly involved in war with the strongest AI and end up winning the war - which is quite fun if I am behind in tech/income. And then it is cruising to alliance/cultural or mil win. Anyway, the question: how can I get a game which is balanced enough through to the
...that little program on galciv.com which allows you to pit 2 ships against each other. I have used it, but can't seem to find it again. Thx, von Schmidt
Ran into Galciv on gameplay.co.uk: http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/productpage.asp?ProductCode=RM00379 Never tried ordering with them, so buyer beware. von Schmidt
